2021 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class Review

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class

Overview

The field of compact luxury crossovers is an eclectic mix of fancy and sporty, and the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLC-class is more of the former than the latter.

While Mercedes does offer two higher-performance versions courtesy of the brand's AMG subdivision, the mainstream model is more focused on style and refinement.

Of course, those who think those traits are alluring but want something more fashion-forward can opt for the sloped-back GLC-class coupe, reviewed separately.

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class

Regardless of body style, the GLCs are motivated by a turbocharged four-cylinder, and it makes this SUV surprisingly quick. The squareback Benz also includes a plug-in-hybrid (PHEV) model that has higher fuel-economy estimates than its PHEV rivals.

The 2021 GLC-class isn't as fun to drive as its sportier peers, but it is definitely one of the more luxurious options in its class.

What's New for 2021?

For 2021, Mercedes gifts the GLC lineup with more standard features and more standalone options. A passive hands-free entry as well as a self-parking function and rear cross-traffic alert are now included on every model.

Automatic high-beam assist and a 360-degree camera system are now available separately on a GLC300 without being bundled as part of a package. Mercedes also adds Cirrus Silver to the list of available paint colors.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

I' am smitten with the sportier GLC43, which I will review separately, but the GLC43 costs an additional $17,000 and is more crossover than most consumers want.

Those buyers considering the tamer models should select the regular GLC300, and those who want an added sense of wintertime security can equip the 4Matic all-wheel-drive system for $2000.

    2021 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class

Although it already has a host of desirable standard features, I'd improve its luxury cred with the Leather Seating package that swaps the faux leather for the real deal.

I'd also choose the packages to secure the ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and the suite of driver assists.

    2021 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class

    Engine, Transmission, and Performance

    A 255-hp turbocharged four-cylinder mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission is the GLC300's standard power-train. Rear-wheel drive is the default setup but all-wheel drive—called 4Matic—is optional.

The GLC300 4Matic has mostly responsive acceleration and well-behaved transmission behavior. The GLC350e plug-in hybrid  is the answer to electrified alternatives such as the BMW X3 xDrive30e and the Volvo XC60 T8.

    2021 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class

The standard GLC lacks the driving verve of the Porsche Macan and other sportier rivals—see the AMG-tuned versions for maximum engagement—but it at least delivers a smooth and quiet ride.

The GLC300 4Matic also posts a brisk trip to 60 mph in just 5.4 seconds. Its all-season tires provides a respectable 0.87 g of cornering grip, and contributed to the compact ute's 172-foot stop from 70 mph. These results were close to the X3 xDrive30i.

    2021 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class

    Fuel Economy

With a plug-in hybrid available, the GLC has a model for those who prioritize fuel economy. The EPA estimates that the gas-powered GLC300 will earn 22 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway highway; the all-wheel-drive model sacrifices 1 mpg in both categories.

The plug-in GLC350e boasts an all-electric driving range of 22 miles and has a combined MPGe rating of 68 MPGe. That efficiency number is much higher than both plug-in versions of the X3 (60 MPGe) and the XC60 (57 MPGe).

    2021 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class

    Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The GLC interior delivers attractive materials, wonderful build quality, and comfortable passenger accommodations. Mercedes also stocks the GLC with luxurious standard equipment that includes dual-zone climate control and power-adjustable front seats with heated cushions.

    2021 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class

The SUV also can be upgraded with leather surfaces, head-up display, heated rear seats, ventilated front seats, and more.

Unfortunately, the GLC is less generous with its limited interior cubby storage and mediocre cargo capacity, which measures 19 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 57 cubes with the back seats folded.

Both volumes are smaller than the BMW X3 that offers 29 and 63 cubes, respectively.

    2021 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class

    Infotainment and Connectivity

Mercedes gives every GLC a versatile infotainment system that benefits from a variety of control inputs and contemporary features.

The standard 10.25-inch touchscreen supports the company's latest MBUX software that responds to voice commands. The system also can be operated by touch-sensitive controls on the steering wheel or a mostly intuitive touchpad on the center console.

While Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability are standard, the fanciest audio system and wireless charging cost extra.

    2021 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class

    Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The 2021 GLC hasn't been crash tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) at the time of writing this post.

The last version that was evaluated by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) wasn't named a Top Safety Pick. The Mercedes SUV also offers a variety of standard and optional driver-assistance technology

    2021 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class

    Key safety features include:

    •  Standard forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking
    •  Available lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist
    •  Available adaptive cruise control
    • 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class

    Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Mercedes-Benz provides competitive warranty coverage compared with premium rivals. However, the German automaker doesn't provide the complimentary maintenance that BMW and Jaguar do.

    •  Limited warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
    •  Power-train warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
    •  No complimentary scheduled maintenance.

    2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class Review

    2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class

    Overview

As the S-class of Benz's SUVs, the 2021 Mercedes GLS-class aims to deliver an undeniably upscale experience, and it succeeds. This large three-row SUV has room for the whole family and pampers everyone with its tech-rich cabin, comfortable ride, and fancy interior materials.

    2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class

    Buyers can choose from either a 362-hp turbocharged inline-six or a 483-hp twin-turbo V-8, both of which benefit from a hybrid-assistance system.

Despite that technology, neither power-train provides very impressive fuel efficiency, but at least the GLS's EPA ratings are in line with those of rival SUVs such as the Land Rover Range Rover and the Lincoln Navigator.

    2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class

All-wheel drive comes standard, as does an air suspension, but Mercedes offers a pothole-sensing upgrade that also increases ground clearance.

    2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class

    What's New for 2021?

The GLS-class was new last year, so 2021 models see only a few changes. Four-zone automatic climate control, ventilated seats, and 20-inch aluminum wheels are newly standard.

    2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class

As is a parking-damage detection feature, which can alert an owner's smartphone via the Mercedes Me Connect app if the car senses a collision while parked.

    2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The GLS450's turbocharged inline-six provides plenty of power and is just as smooth as the GLS580's V-8, so I'd stick with that and put the extra dough toward some options.

The Executive Rear Seat Plus package turns the second row into a luxurious zone with massaging seats, a wireless smartphone charging pad, a tablet controller for the GLS's infotainment system, plusher headrests, and side-impact airbags.

Ordering that package requires that you shell out for leather upholstery, which, surprisingly, isn't standard.

      2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class

      Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Two models are offered—the six-cylinder GLS450 and the eight-cylinder GLS580—and both feature some hybridization. The GLS450's turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six is silky smooth and good for 362 horsepower.

      2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class

The GLS580 is far more powerful, making 483 horsepower from its twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8. Despite its size, the GLS-class is easy to hustle on a twisty road, but it's not overly sporty or harsh over bumps.

All models come standard with an air suspension, but Mercedes offers a trick new system called E-Active Body Control.

      2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class

It utilizes a forward-facing camera to scan for bumps and adjusts the suspension accordingly so riders won't feel those road imperfections.

It's a cool technology but expensive, and I think most buyers will find the standard setup does a fine job.

      2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class

      Fuel Economy

The EPA fuel-economy estimates for the GLS-class aren't great. The GLS450 earns 19 mpg in the city, 23 mpg on the highway, and 21 mpg combined. The GLS580 does worse, with 16 mpg, 21 mpg, and 18 mpg, respectively.

      2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class

      Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Borrowing its dashboard and cockpit layout from the similarly new GLE-class SUV, this generation of GLS is far more modern than the one it replaces.

      2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class

It'll fit up to seven passengers but can be spec'd for six with the optional captain's chairs.

Passenger space is generous in the first and second rows, and the third row, while not as spacious as the second, can accommodate an adult without too much complaining - something that can't be said of the wayback in the X7.

      2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class

      Infotainment and Connectivity

Two huge 12.3-inch digital displays take up the majority of the dashboard: One serves as a reconfigurable gauge display for the driver while the other handles infotainment duties and runs Mercedes-Benz's new MBUX software, which features an iPhone-like virtual assistant.

      2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability, in-dash navigation, and an on-board Wi-Fi hotspot are all standard. All GLS models come with a 13-speaker Burmester Surround Sound stereo, but if that's not enough for you, there's an available Burmester 3D audio system with an insane 26-speaker arrangement.

      2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class

      Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

Neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) have released crash-test results for the 2021 GLS-class at the time of writing this post.

Mercedes-Benz offers several different types of driver-assistance features on this SUV, but the most interesting bits—such as a semi-autonomous driving mode - cost extra.

      2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class

      Key safety features include:

      •  Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
      •  Available lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist
      •  Available adaptive cruise control with a semi-autonomous driving mode
      • 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class

      Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Buyers of the GLS-class receive a four-year/50,000-mile warranty as standard, which is far from the best in this class.

The Cadillac Escalade offers two more years of power-train coverage, and the Lincoln Navigator comes with four years of complimentary scheduled maintenance if you go for the luxurious Black Label model.

      •  Limited warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
      •  Power-train warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
      •  No complimentary scheduled maintenance.

      2021 Hyundai Palisade Review

      2021 Hyundai Palisade

      Overview

Although the 2021 Palisade shares a platform with the Kia Telluride, the Hyundai's distinct styling cleverly carves out its own niche.

That allows it to appeal to a different subset of the SUV-buying public while offering much of what I like about the Telluride, including a smooth-running power-train, spacious cabin, and composed on-road demeanor.

      2021 Hyundai Palisade

The Palisade takes a more upscale approach, with its top trims offering almost Genesis-like levels of comfort and refinement.

Along the way, its cheaper value-minded trims still offer a generous set of convenience and infotainment features made to suit the modern family.

Its long warranty coverage and standard driver-assistance tech are yet two more reasons to have the Palisade at the top of your shopping list.

      2021 Hyundai Palisade

      What's New for 2021?

For its next trick, Hyundai will turn its already luxurious Palisade SUV into an even more upscale three-rower with the addition of the top-spec Calligraphy trim for 2021.

The Calligraphy model adds unique exterior lighting elements, boldly-designed 20-inch wheels, a distinct grille finish, and standard all-wheel drive. Inside, buyers of the enhanced model will notice a faux-suede headliner, quilted-leather upholstery on the doors and seats, and a perforated leather wrap on the steering wheel.

      2021 Hyundai Palisade

What isn't included is the executive-level second row seats with the dual-screen entertainment system that's part of the Calligraphy package in Hyundai's home market of Korea.

Elsewhere in the lineup, the larger 10.3-inch infotainment display, in-dash navigation, SiriusXM satellite radio, the in-car intercom, and a semi-autonomous driving mode have all been rolled into the mid-range SEL's Premium package.

All models now come with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, LED headlights, and HD radio.

      2021 Hyundai Palisade

Pricing and Which One to Buy

My Palisade of choice would be the mid-range SEL with the Premium package. All-wheel drive costs $1700, but consumers in more temperate climates could forgo this choice.

With the Premium package, The SEL Palisade slides in just under $40,000.

      2021 Hyundai Palisade

Still offers much of the SUV's best tech and luxury features, including the larger 10.3-inch infotainment system, in-dash navigation, and Hyundai's semi-autonomous driving mode.

If you're considering going with an all-wheel drive version of the Limited—which comes nicely equipped with nappa leather seating surfaces, heated and ventilated first and second rows, a 12-speaker Harman/Kardon audio system, just to name a few items.

I suggest taking a look instead at the top-level Calligraphy, which costs only $925 more and comes standard with all-wheel drive.

      2021 Hyundai Palisade

      Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Palisade is powered by a 3.8-liter V-6. Coupled to an eight-speed automatic transmission, the engine's 291 horsepower is adequate for this application.

The Palisade's transmission can be manually shifted with steering-wheel-mounted paddles. The gearbox shifts smoothly on its own, but there's some busy shuffling of the ratios when climbing hills.

Front-wheel drive is standard, while all-wheel drive is optional on SE, SEL, and Limited trim levels; it's standard on the range-topping Calligraphy.

      2021 Hyundai Palisade

All Palisades come standard with a robust transmission cooler, trailer pre-wiring and sway control, and can tow up to 5000 pounds when equipped with the dealer-installed trailer hitch.

The Palisade Goes from zero to 60 mph in 6.9 seconds and the Palisade needs 182 feet to stop from 70 mph. It proves to be slightly quicker than the Telluride but slower than the Chevy Traverse.

      2021 Hyundai Palisade

      Fuel Economy

According to the EPA, the front-wheel-drive Palisade achieves a rating of 19 mpg city and 26 mpg highway. When equipped with all-wheel drive, the Palisade gets 19 city and 24 mpg highway.

      2021 Hyundai Palisade

      Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

There's room for up to eight passengers in the SE and SEL trims, seven in the Limited and Calligraphy, and there's plenty of space in all three rows for their occupants.

The second row features a one-touch button to move the seat forward for easy access to the third row. Noise from the road is suppressed; however, a large amount of wind noise penetrates the doors.

      2021 Hyundai Palisade

With the second- and third-row seats folded, power operation is optional on the SEL and standard on Limited. Cargo volume behind the front seats is 86 cubic feet.

      2021 Hyundai Palisade

With the second row in the upright position and the third row folded, there is 46 cubic feet. With the third-row in use, the volume shrinks to a modest 18 cubes.

      2021 Hyundai Palisade

Underneath the load floor, there is plenty of room to store muddy or wet items. The cubbies in the doors are tight, but there is reasonable storage within and below the floating-bridge center console.

      2021 Hyundai Palisade

      Infotainment and Connectivity

An 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment display with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Bluetooth connectivity is standard on SE and SEL trims.

A responsive and intuitive 10.3-inch display rendered with sharp resolution—optional on the SEL and standard with the Limited and Calligraphy—offers navigation and SiriusXM satellite radio.

      2021 Hyundai Palisade

Both systems also can be operated by physical knobs and buttons. Up to seven USB ports can be optioned as well as the ability to connect two Bluetooth devices simultaneously.

When equipped with Hyundai's Blue Link app service, the Palisade can be locked and unlocked as well as started remotely through Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant.

      2021 Hyundai Palisade

      Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has given the Palisade a five-star safety rating and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has named it a Top Safety Pick+.

On top of the standard safety equipment, nearly every advanced safety system can be added as the trim levels progress.

      2021 Hyundai Palisade

      Key safety features include:

      •  Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
      •  Standard lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist
      •  Standard adaptive cruise control
      • 2021 Hyundai Palisade

      Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Hyundai's warranty is one of the best in the business, highlighted by the 10-year, 100,000-mile power-train coverage for the first owner of the vehicle. The company also now offers complimentary scheduled maintenance that bests mainstream rivals such as Toyota.

      •  Limited warranty covers five years or 60,000 miles
      •  Power-train warranty covers 10 years or 100,000 miles
      •  Complimentary maintenance is covered for three years or 36,000 miles.
