2021 Kia Telluride Review

2021 Kia Telluride

Overview

The 2021 Kia Telluride is a terrific three-row crossover, because it's great for shuttling families and looks more expensive than it is. Credit Kia's ability to deliver an upscale experience and popular features at an bargain price for its largest model's success.

The Telluride has few compromises and outshines its mid-size SUV competitors in all the important categories. While its standard V-6 power-train could be more fuel efficient, and I wouldn’t mind if its driving behavior was sharper, there's no denying that it exceeds its mission of moving people and their stuff better than anything in its class.

The 2021 Telluride simply provides unrivaled levels of luxury and remarkable utility, which is why it'll make you feel richer than your bank account might suggest.

What's New for 2021?

Kia has gone light on changes for the Telluride's 2021 update, with the biggest update being the new Nightfall appearance package. This gives it a stylish—dare I say sinister—look thanks to a blacked-out grille, 20-inch wheels, and various other accents. However, it's only available with all-wheel drive on the top two trim levels.

The Telluride's other enhancements include a seven-pin trailer harness (previously a four-pin connection) and the key fob adds an "On" button for the remote-start system. The EX trim level also receives LED headlights as part of the Premium package. Black Copper and Sangria are new paint options on select models, too.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The Telluride is such a great value that I'd even choose the top-of-the-line SX model. It comes standard with flashy features, such as a 12-way power driver's seat, black-painted 20-inch rims, blind-spot monitoring, a Harman/Kardon audio system, front and rear sunroofs, and second-row captain's chairs.

Those who want the added sense of security that comes with all-wheel drive can have it for an extra $2000 ($100 less than on the S and EX).

I'd further enhance my Telluride with the SX Prestige package that brings a head-up display, heated and ventilated second-row seats, nappa leather upholstery, and more.

The tow package's hitch and self-leveling rear suspension are also a worthy addition in order to best utilize the ute's towing capability.

2021 Kia Telluride

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Under the hood of every 2020 Telluride is a naturally aspirated V-6 that makes 291 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque. Its engine pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission that feeds the front wheels in the standard format—all-wheel drive is also optional across the board.

The top-of-the-line Telluride SX goes to 60 mph in 7.1 seconds. However, the big Kia doesn't feel as responsive to throttle inputs at lower speeds as did some of its turbocharged rivals.

The Telluride's ride is on the firm side, with harsh pavement sometimes throwing the three-row SUV off its intended path. A self-leveling rear air suspension is also available.

Brakes are excellent and the steering is precise with a nice heft to its feel. The Telluride boasts 8.0 inches of ground clearance for off-road excursions, and it can tow up to 5000 pounds.

Fuel Economy

Unlike many rival three-row SUVs, the Telluride is only offered with a V-6 power-train. The EPA estimates the front-drive version is the thriftiest, with ratings of 20 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway.

All-wheel-drive models drop to 19 mpg city and 24 mpg highway, which are slightly higher than V-6–powered competitors such as the Volkswagen Atlas and slightly lower than the Honda Pilot.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Regardless of people's opinion about the Telluride's bold outward appearance, its interior is undeniably upscale and comfortable. The build quality is excellent, the materials are attractive, and the desirable features are plentiful.

Because the Telluride is several inches longer than the seven-passenger Sorento, its cabin is even more spacious, especially for those in the wayback seat. There is room for eight with a second-row bench seat or room for seven with the optional captain's chairs.

2021 Kia Telluride

Infotainment and Connectivity

Even the entry-level Telluride boasts a robust infotainment system that features an 8.0-inch touchscreen with popular content that includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability along with numerous power points.

Every other model has the same equipment as well as a standard 10.3-inch touchscreen and wireless phone charging. A Harman/Kardon audio system is included on the top-tier SX model.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The 2021 Kia Telluride earned a five-star crash-test rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and the 2020 model was named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS).

Kia is packaging a comprehensive suite of driver-assistance technology on all Telluride models, and several upgraded assists are also available.

Key safety features include:

  •  Standard forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking
  •  Standard lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist
  •  Standard blind-spot monitoring

    Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Kia provides some of the best comprehensive coverage out there, with the longest power-train warranty in the biz. However, it lacks the complimentary scheduled maintenance of rivals such as the Toyota Highlander and the Chevy Traverse.

    •  Limited warranty covers five years or 60,000 miles
    •  Power-train warranty covers 10 years or 100,000 miles
    •  No complimentary scheduled maintenance.

    2021 Mazda CX-9 Review

    2021 Mazda CX-9

    Overview

If the idea of buying a crossover is an affront to your driving-enthusiast sensibilities, I' am happy to report that the 2021 Mazda CX-9 delivers plenty of the brand's hallmark driving verve.

Its handling is far sharper than any of its rivals' and it's powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder that will provide enough pep for most drivers.

    2021 Mazda CX-9

The Mazda's cabin earns just as much as its driving dynamics, as it offers a near-luxury atmosphere and competitive list of standard and optional features. A host of driver-assistance features are standard, too.

Rivals such as the also-excellent Kia Telluride and its corporate cousin, the Hyundai Palisade, offer more passenger and cargo space, but the CX-9 remains one of my favorite SUVs to recommend to those who value athletic handling and driver engagement as much as I do.

    2021 Mazda CX-9

    What's New for 2021?

The CX-9's infotainment receives an overhaul for 2021 and now comes with a 10.3-inch display and the updated interface that debuted on the Mazda 3 sedan and hatchback.

A wireless smartphone charging pad is now standard on Touring, Grand Touring, and Signature models.

    2021 Mazda CX-9

A new Carbon Edition package is available on the Grand Touring, which adds black exterior trim, a blacked-out grille, black 20-inch wheels, and red leather seats.

Grand Touring and Signature models receive new paddle shifters and an improved exterior camera system; the top-level Signature benefits from a host of new standard equipment, including rear automated emergency braking, a driver-attention monitoring system, updated grille and wheel designs, and new quilted leather upholstery.

    2021 Mazda CX-9

Pricing and Which One to Buy

Of the CX-9's four trim levels, the Touring model represents the best value. It offers plenty of niceties, including a power-operated rear lift-gate, leather upholstery, power-adjustable front seats, and keyless entry with push-button start.

To get the CX-9's new second-row captain's chairs—a feature many three-row SUV buyers want—opt for the Touring Premium package, which also adds two additional USB ports in the third row, a Bose audio system, SiriusXM satellite radio, fog lamps, front and rear parking sensors, and second-row window sunshades.

    2021 Mazda CX-9

    Engine, Transmission, and Performance

In a segment where V-6 power is common, Mazda took a risk by offering a turbocharged four-cylinder engine as the CX-9's sole power-train in the hope of a gain in fuel-economy.

It does eke out an advantage over some competitors, but it's slight. The engine sounds gutsy and manages a class-competitive result the acceleration test, where it scoots the vehicle from zero to 60 mph in 7.1 seconds.

    2021 Mazda CX-9

The 2021 CX-9 is clearly the driving enthusiast's family hauler; surprisingly light on its feet, it often feels as if you're driving a smaller SUV. The suspension is firm, but it's still supple enough riding over rough stretches of road.

The steering, while not as communicative as other Mazdas, still imparts vigor that's missing from other crossovers. The firm suspension and accurate steering culminate in superior cornering control.

    2021 Mazda CX-9

    Fuel Economy

Apart from its solid acceleration performance, the CX-9 is, according to the EPA, more fuel efficient than many of its rivals.

While 2021 figures have not been released at the time of writing this post, the 2020 model earned EPA estimates of 22 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway with front-wheel drive; all-wheel drive drops both of those figures by 2 mpg.

    2021 Mazda CX-9

    Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The CX-9's cabin wows with upscale materials and detailed styling, but compared with other SUVs in the segment, it's short on passenger and cargo space.

    2021 Mazda CX-9

Open the door and the CX-9's interior welcomes passengers with an upscale cabin that wouldn't look out of place in an Audi.

    2021 Mazda CX-9

Mazda has tastefully arranged soft-touch plastic with handsome graining, brushed aluminum, and, in our Signature-trim test car, genuine rosewood.

    2021 Mazda CX-9

The CX-9's smaller measurements mean real-world limitations. The CX-9's second and third rows of seats fold easily for quick configuration changes, though, and the resultant load floor is flat, making it easy to load bulky items.

    2021 Mazda CX-9

    Infotainment and Connectivity

All CX-9s come with Mazda's user-friendly infotainment system and a 10.3-inch display. The software is easy to navigate and the graphics are crisp, plus the Mazda Connected Services suite provides remote access to vehicle status, telematics, and key operations such as remote start and remote locking.

Bluetooth phone and streaming audio, HD radio, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto are all standard features. A wireless smartphone charging pad is new for the 2021 model year but isn't offered on the base Sport model.

    2021 Mazda CX-9

    Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

A Top Safety Pick+ honor from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is difficult to earn, but the Mazda scored well in its crash tests. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration also gave the CX-9 a five-star result.

    Key safety features include:

    •  Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
    •  Standard lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist
    •  Standard adaptive cruise control
    • 2021 Mazda CX-9

    Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Mazda offers an adequate protection plan for buyers of new CX-9s. What it doesn't offer is something that both the GMC Acadia and the Toyota Highlander do: Complimentary scheduled maintenance.

    •  Limited warranty covers 3 years or 36,000 miles
    •  Power-train warranty covers 5 years or 60,000 miles
    •  No complimentary scheduled maintenance

    2021 Genesis G90 Review

    2021 Genesis G90

    Overview

As the flagship of the nascent Genesis luxury brand, the 2021 G90 sedan delivers a cossetting ride and limo-like cabin but does so at a price that undercuts established rivals by thousands of dollars.

A twin-turbocharged V-6 is standard and buyers can opt for a 5.0-liter V-8 engine, but I found that performance is about the same no matter which one is under the G90's hood. Both are smooth and quiet, which helps create a serene cabin environment when cruising.

    2021 Genesis G90

The G90's front and rear seats are plush, spacious, and comfortable, and the cabin boasts plenty of standard luxury and convenience features.

The primary area where the G90 doesn't match rivals such as the 2021 BMW 7-series and the Mercedes-Benz S-class is in the tech department, but most users will still find its standard infotainment and driver-assistance features intuitive and helpful.

    2021 Genesis G90

    What's New for 2021?

Coming off a thorough facelift for the 2020 model year, the 2021 G90 receives only slight changes. A new Rear Comfort driving mode improves the ride for rear seat passengers. The dashboard and door panels swap genuine leather for the fake stuff used previously.

The G90's infotainment system is now capable of over-the-air updates and improved voice recognition. The only exterior difference is a new design for the 19-inch wheels.

    2021 Genesis G90

Pricing and Which One to Buy

Normally I love a big V-8 in a luxury car, but in this case I'd stick with the twin-turbocharged 3.3-liter V-6 and save the money.

The 3.3T, as it's known, is gutsy and nearly as quick as the 5.0-liter V-8.

All-wheel drive is optional should you need it, but it adds $2500 to the bottom line.

    2021 Genesis G90

    Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The base turbocharged 3.3-liter V-6 setup with 365 horsepower is an overachiever, matching the acceleration of the 420-hp 5.0-liter V-8 from zero to 60 mph.

Both power-trains pair with a responsive eight-speed automatic transmission and offer either rear- or all-wheel drive. I don't see any reason to pay extra for the less efficient V-8, unless you prefer its more relaxed, old-school character and distinctive sound.

Although the G90 doesn't accelerate as rapidly as its competitors, neither the V-6 nor the V-8 engine will leave you wanting more power. Quietness and cushiness reign supreme, and the Genesis can feel a bit sloppy as you push the pace through a road's curvy bits.

Its soft and pillowy ride evokes thoughts of Buicks from the 1970s, but not necessarily in a bad way. It smooths out rough roads and imparts a serene, planted feel on the highway.

The trade-off is a fair amount of body roll in corners, but precise and light steering keeps the heavy G90 from feeling like a total boat.

    2021 Genesis G90

    Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Trimmed in nappa leather, suede, wood, and brushed metal, the G90's interior has a rich feel, even if its design is understated.

    2021 Genesis G90

Genesis embarrasses higher-priced competitors by making features such as heated and cooled front seats, a head-up display, and a power-operated rear sunshade standard equipment rather than costly options.

    2021 Genesis G90

As befits a full-size luxury sedan, the G90's plush rear seat is a lovely place. There's plenty of room to stretch out, despite what its dimensions may suggest. Neither the Genesis nor any of its competitors offer folding rear seats, so the capacious trunk is all the cargo space you're going to get.

    2021 Genesis G90

There is a pass-through behind the rear center armrest for carrying long, narrow items such as skis. Its center console is among the largest in its class, but its door pockets are small. A handy compartment in front of the shifter is nicely sized for holding a smartphone.

    2021 Genesis G90

    Infotainment and Connectivity

The standard 12.3-inch touchscreen is crisp and clear, and its central control knob combines with hard buttons and knobs on the dashboard to make navigating the various menus a cinch.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration are both standard, as is a wireless smartphone charging pad and a 17-speaker Lexicon stereo system.

    2021 Genesis G90

    Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

While it has never been crash-tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) at the time of writing this post, the G90 was named a Top Safety Pick+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Every version comes standard with lots of driver-assistance technology. Competitors from Mercedes-Benz and BMW require you to pay thousands of dollars extra to get these features.

    2021 Genesis G90

    Key safety equipment includes:

    •  Standard forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking
    •  Standard lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist
    •  Standard adaptive cruise control

    • 2021 Genesis G90

    Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Not only does Genesis provide the longest warranty coverage in its class, it also includes complimentary scheduled maintenance and other perks such as a complimentary service where dealership staff will pick up the G90 and take it in for service on your behalf.

    •  Limited warranty covers 5 years or 60,000 miles
    •  Power-train warranty covers 10 years or 100,000 miles
    •  Complimentary maintenance is covered for 3 years or 36,000 miles.
