2021 BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe Review

2021 BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe

Overview

As one of the least expensive ways to join the BMW owners club, the 2021 2-series Gran Coupe seeks to deliver a luxury-car experience, and it mostly succeeds.

The GC challenges other scaled-down premium four-doors such as the Audi A3 and the 2020 Mercedes-Benz A-class. A turbocharged four-cylinder engine is found under the hood, but it's available in two states of tune: with 228 horsepower in the 228i and with 301 horses in the M235i.

The latter delivers blistering acceleration, but the former is no slouch. The 2-series Gran Coupe's ride is refined, but its handling isn't as sharp as I'd expect from a car with the BMW badge.

Unlike the rear-drive-based 2-series coupe and convertible, the four-door 2-series Gran Coupe comes off a front-drive platform borrowed from BMW's sister brand, Mini, and it can't seem to hide that fact.

What's New for 2021?

Like many other 2021 BMW models, the 2-series Gran Coupe receives SiriusXM satellite radio as standard, and Android Auto compatibility is finally on the spec sheet.

The once optional 10.3-inch infotainment and gauge-cluster screens are now standard, same goes for the navigation system with real-time traffic updates. Plus, the new Driver Assistance package provides adaptive cruise control and an automatic parking feature.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

Driving enthusiasts will likely yearn for the hotter M235i model, but for the majority of drivers, the base 228i Gran Coupe will surely satisfy. I'd skip most options, but adding the Convenience package—keyless entry, driver's-side lumbar support, and a panoramic sunroof—seems like a no-brainer.

2021 BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe

    Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Both 2-series Gran Coupe models come with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. The one in the 228i makes 228 horsepower, whereas the M235i's produces 301 horses.

All-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission are standard across the line. Around town, the 228i feels sprightly and eager, it does a nice 5.1-second run to 60 mph. But a short test drive in the M235i will push that car from your mind.

The M235i makes the entry-level model feel tame, it blasts to 60 mph in just 4.2 seconds. That's quicker than the X2 M35i SUV, which has the same power-train.

    2021 BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe

    Fuel Economy

The EPA rates the 228i xDrive Gran Coupe for 23 mpg city, 33 mpg highway, and 27 mpg combined. The more powerful M235i model earns nearly the same ratings as the 228i: 23 mpg city, 32 mpg highway, and 26 mpg combined.

    2021 BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe

    Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Cabin styling matches that of modern BMWs like the 2021 3-series sedan and the 2020 X3 SUV

It's a simple driver-focused design featuring ambient interior lighting that illuminates the dashboard and door panels.

    2021 BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe

BMW claims that rear-seat legroom is nearly the same as the larger 3-series sedan's, but overall the cabin feels snug for both front- and rear-seat passengers.

The 2-series Gran Coupe's small cargo area is good enough for grocery runs and weekend road trips, and the back row folds down to accommodate bulkier cargo.

    2021 BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe

    Infotainment and Connectivity

The driver faces a 10.3-inch reconfigurable digital gauge display and a dashboard-mounted 10.3-inch touchscreen. The latter is angled slightly toward the driver for ease of use.

Navigation and SiriusXM satellite radio come standard, but a wireless smartphone-charging pad and Harman/Kardon stereo system will cost extra. And BMW provides Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility at no charge.

    Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

Neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) have crash-tested the 2-series Gran Coupe at the time of writing this post. BMW's Active Driving Assistant, which includes a suite of driver-assistance features to help reduce the likelihood of an accident, comes standard.

    Key safety features include:

    •  Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
    •  Standard blind-spot monitoring with rear-cross-traffic alert
    •  Standard lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist
    • 2021 BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe

      Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

BMW offers a warranty package that matches what its European rivals provide, and then it sweetens the deal with three full years of complimentary scheduled maintenance. Audi offers just one year of included service visits, and Mercedes-Benz, none.

      •  Limited warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
      •  Power-train warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
      •  Complimentary scheduled maintenance is covered for three years or 36,000 miles.

      2021 Volkswagen Tiguan Review

      2021 Volkswagen Tiguan

      Overview

The compact SUV segment is full of good options, but one of me favorite is the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan, which is one of the most well-rounded choices.

It's handsomely styled, well-equipped, and practical. Plus, the VW is one of only two compact SUVs that offer an optional third row of seats (the other is the Mitsubishi Outlander).

      2021 Volkswagen Tiguan

All models come with the same 184-hp four-cylinder engine, which is admittedly a little poky. Still, its fuel economy is competitive with rivals such as the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4.

While the Tiguan does offer some of the same sharp driving dynamics that endears me to majority of the Volkswagen lineup, its practicality is really what makes it worth buying.

      2021 Volkswagen Tiguan

      What's New for 2021?

In advance of a more thorough update for the 2022 model year, VW makes a few changes to the Tiguan for 2021.

The base S and mid-range SE models receive new 17-inch wheel designs and the latter of the two receives standard adaptive cruise control.

Likewise, the top-spec SEL Premium R-Line model gains a power-adjustable front passenger's seat.

      2021 Volkswagen Tiguan

Pricing and Which One to Buy

Choosing a Tiguan trim is only about features and convenience equipment, as there are no power-train options.

The jump from SE to SEL is a significant one, adding about $5000, but all the extra features it adds, including a panoramic sunroof, remote start, power lift-gate, and larger 18-inch wheels, may be worth it to you.

        2021 Volkswagen Tiguan

Adding all-wheel drive, which is available on any trim, adds roughly $1300 on the SEL, but makes the third row optional. If you're in the business of hauling kids, I'd spend the extra money to make the Tiguan a seven-seater.

        2021 Volkswagen Tiguan

        Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Under the hood of every 2021 Tiguan is a turbocharged four-cylinder that makes 184 horsepower; front-wheel drive is standard but Volkswagen's 4Motion all-wheel-drive system is optional.

The reticence of the eight-speed automatic to downshift combined with noticeable turbo lag means that the Tiguan feels anything but eager off the line and a bit slothful around town.

        2021 Volkswagen Tiguan

The Tiguan's ride is comfortable and compliant, which should please most drivers, but the tradeoff is less precision during brisk driving.

All-wheel-drive models are noticeably better at managing Michigan's cratered highways and byways. The Tiguan's brake-pedal action is soft and it doesn't match up to the firm.

        2021 Volkswagen Tiguan

        Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The Tiguan's interior is classically Volkswagen, which is to say that it is simple and functional but not particularly stylish or rich.

        2021 Volkswagen Tiguan

Others offer more legroom in the second row, but the Tiguan is one of the only vehicles in the class that can be had with seating for seven. The Tiguan comes standard with cloth seating and partial power adjustment for the front seats.

        2021 Volkswagen Tiguan

Opting into more expensive versions can net full power adjustment for the driver, faux-leather seating, and a panoramic sunroof.

        2021 Volkswagen Tiguan

With just 12 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row, the Tiguan simply can't be a hauling vehicle when the third row is in use.

With the third row folded, the Tiguan's cargo measurements put it about in the middle of this class for raw space.

        2021 Volkswagen Tiguan

        Infotainment and Connectivity

Volkswagen's infotainment system is sleek and features touch buttons integrated into a large glass screen.

        2021 Volkswagen Tiguan

The system comes standard with a Wi-Fi hotspot, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, so drivers who prefer their smartphone's familiar interface to Volkswagen's system.

A 480-watt, nine-speaker Fender audio system is also available, but only in the top SEL Premium trim.

        2021 Volkswagen Tiguan

        Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

This generation of Tiguan still hasn't been rated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) at the time of writing this post.

        2021 Volkswagen Tiguan

However, the last version that was evaluated by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) was named a Top Safety Pick.

Forward-collision alert with automatic braking and a blind-spot warning system are standard.

        2021 Volkswagen Tiguan

        Key safety features include:

        •  Standard automated emergency braking
        •  Standard blind-spot monitoring
        •  Available adaptive cruise control

        • 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan

        Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

What was previously the industry's best bumper-to-bumper warranty at six years and 72,000 miles of coverage has been shortened to four years or 50,000 miles.

To help make that reduced coverage a little easier to handle, all new Volkswagens offer two years of regularly scheduled maintenance included at no charge.

        2021 Volkswagen Tiguan

Limited warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles

        •  Power-train warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
        •  Complimentary maintenance is covered for two years or 20,000 miles.

2020 BMW M8 Gran Coupe Review

        2020 BMW M8 Gran Coupe

        Overview

BMW no longer makes the ultimate driving machines, but the 2020 M8 Gran Coupe proves it's still committed to making outrageously powerful machines.

The sedan's twin-turbo V-8 generates between 600 and 617 horsepower, and its anamorphous all-wheel-drive system can simulate rear-drive rowdiness. Per M-car tradition, this four-door Bimmer features a pumped-up appearance and exclusive performance equipment.

        2020 BMW M8 Gran Coupe

Of course, its interior is as picturesque and posh as sitting poolside at a five-star resort. There's also an enticing array of high-tech and luxurious features to satisfy passengers who aren't preoccupied with reaching extralegal speeds and clipping apexes on a race track.

Although the M8 Gran Coupe is the definition of excessive, it's also a synonym for exhilarating.

        2020 BMW M8 Gran Coupe

        What's New for 2020?

The M8 Gran Coupe is all new for 2020. It slots above the regular BMW 8-series Gran Coupe, which itself is a four-door version of the 8-series coupe and convertible. In terms of BMW sedans, this is the company's definitive driver's car.

        2020 BMW M8 Gran Coupe

Pricing and Which One to Buy

Those who want M-car performance are obviously willing to spend M-car money. In this case, the base M8 Gran Coupe costs about $21,000 more than the one-rung-below BMW M850i.

While I'd be content with the cheaper M850i and its detuned twin-turbo V-8, the M8 Gran Coupe is the only antidote for BMW enthusiasts who want the company's fastest four-door.

        2020 BMW M8 Gran Coupe

For that reason, I'd recommend the M8 Competition. I'd go all-in on the priciest paint option (Frozen Bluestone Metallic), pony up for both Driver Assistance packages, the Comfort Seating package, and tick all the other option boxes.

These include the carbon-ceramic brakes, M Carbon exterior package, night vision with pedestrian detection, faux-suede headliner, Bowers & Wilkins sound system, and M Driver's package.

        2020 BMW M8 Gran Coupe

        Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The 2020 M8 Gran Coupe is powered by a lusty twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 that makes 600 horsepower on the regular model and an additional 17 ponies on the Competition version.

Both M8s send that power to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission.

        2020 BMW M8 Gran Coupe

However, tail-out antics are made possible by a selectable rear-wheel-drive mode that routes all the V-8's fury to the back wheels.

A specially tuned adaptive suspension is also standard, and it can be adjusted through the sedan's customizable and preset drive modes.

For those who want the ultimate performance from the M8 Gran Coupe, BMW offers carbon-ceramic brakes on both models and exclusive go-fast goodies on the Competition.

        2020 BMW M8 Gran Coupe

        Fuel Economy

Regardless of whether you strap into the 600-hp M8 Gran Coupe or the 617-hp Competition model, both Bimmers have the same fuel-economy ratings from the EPA. That means an estimated 15 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway.

        2020 BMW M8 Gran Coupe

        Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

As with the stubbier BMW M8 coupe and convertible, the Gran Coupe equivalent features an exquisitely appointed interior that looks as rich as it feels.

        2020 BMW M8 Gran Coupe

While the design is more dignified than dazzling, the four-door M8 provides more plentiful rear passenger space.

        2020 BMW M8 Gran Coupe

It also offers a cornucopia of desirable standard features such as a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, 16-way power front seats with memory settings, four-zone climate control, heated and ventilated front seats, leather upholstery, and more.

        2020 BMW M8 Gran Coupe

The cabin also can be enhanced with fancier color schemes and trims as well as a Comfort Seating package. This adds heated seats throughout along with power sunshades for rear-seat passengers.

        2020 BMW M8 Gran Coupe

        Infotainment and Connectivity

Every 2020 M8 Gran Coupe is equipped with a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system that can also be operated with a rotary controller on the center console.

        2020 BMW M8 Gran Coupe

Along with a 16-speaker, 464-watt Harman/Kardon sound system, the brawny BMW has a Wi-Fi hotspot and Apple CarPlay as standard.

However, Android Auto is conspicuously absent. Those who aren't satisfied with the default audio unit can upgrade to a more powerful Bowers & Wilkins setup.

        2020 BMW M8 Gran Coupe

        Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The 2020 M8 Gran Coupe hasn't been crash-tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) at the time of writing this post.

        2020 BMW M8 Gran Coupe

While copious driver-assistance technology is available, everything except forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking costs extra.

        2020 BMW M8 Gran Coupe

        Key safety features include:

        •  Available adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go technology
        •  Available blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert
        •  Available lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist

        • 2020 BMW M8 Gran Coupe

        Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

BMW provides a competitive limited and power-train warranty compared with luxury rivals. It also provides complimentary scheduled maintenance unlike competitors from Mercedes-AMG.

        •  Limited warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
        •  Power-train warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
        •  Complimentary maintenance is covered for 3 years or 36,000 miles.
