2020 BMW M8 Gran Coupe Review

2020 BMW M8 Gran Coupe

Overview

BMW no longer makes the ultimate driving machines, but the 2020 M8 Gran Coupe proves it's still committed to making outrageously powerful machines.

The sedan's twin-turbo V-8 generates between 600 and 617 horsepower, and its anamorphous all-wheel-drive system can simulate rear-drive rowdiness. Per M-car tradition, this four-door Bimmer features a pumped-up appearance and exclusive performance equipment.

Of course, its interior is as picturesque and posh as sitting poolside at a five-star resort. There's also an enticing array of high-tech and luxurious features to satisfy passengers who aren't preoccupied with reaching extralegal speeds and clipping apexes on a race track.

Although the M8 Gran Coupe is the definition of excessive, it's also a synonym for exhilarating.

What's New for 2020?

The M8 Gran Coupe is all new for 2020. It slots above the regular BMW 8-series Gran Coupe, which itself is a four-door version of the 8-series coupe and convertible. In terms of BMW sedans, this is the company's definitive driver's car.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

Those who want M-car performance are obviously willing to spend M-car money. In this case, the base M8 Gran Coupe costs about $21,000 more than the one-rung-below BMW M850i.

While I'd be content with the cheaper M850i and its detuned twin-turbo V-8, the M8 Gran Coupe is the only antidote for BMW enthusiasts who want the company's fastest four-door.

For that reason, I'd recommend the M8 Competition. I'd go all-in on the priciest paint option (Frozen Bluestone Metallic), pony up for both Driver Assistance packages, the Comfort Seating package, and tick all the other option boxes.

These include the carbon-ceramic brakes, M Carbon exterior package, night vision with pedestrian detection, faux-suede headliner, Bowers & Wilkins sound system, and M Driver's package.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The 2020 M8 Gran Coupe is powered by a lusty twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 that makes 600 horsepower on the regular model and an additional 17 ponies on the Competition version.

Both M8s send that power to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission.

However, tail-out antics are made possible by a selectable rear-wheel-drive mode that routes all the V-8's fury to the back wheels.

A specially tuned adaptive suspension is also standard, and it can be adjusted through the sedan's customizable and preset drive modes.

For those who want the ultimate performance from the M8 Gran Coupe, BMW offers carbon-ceramic brakes on both models and exclusive go-fast goodies on the Competition.

Fuel Economy

Regardless of whether you strap into the 600-hp M8 Gran Coupe or the 617-hp Competition model, both Bimmers have the same fuel-economy ratings from the EPA. That means an estimated 15 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

As with the stubbier BMW M8 coupe and convertible, the Gran Coupe equivalent features an exquisitely appointed interior that looks as rich as it feels.

While the design is more dignified than dazzling, the four-door M8 provides more plentiful rear passenger space.

It also offers a cornucopia of desirable standard features such as a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, 16-way power front seats with memory settings, four-zone climate control, heated and ventilated front seats, leather upholstery, and more.

The cabin also can be enhanced with fancier color schemes and trims as well as a Comfort Seating package. This adds heated seats throughout along with power sunshades for rear-seat passengers.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Every 2020 M8 Gran Coupe is equipped with a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system that can also be operated with a rotary controller on the center console.

Along with a 16-speaker, 464-watt Harman/Kardon sound system, the brawny BMW has a Wi-Fi hotspot and Apple CarPlay as standard.

However, Android Auto is conspicuously absent. Those who aren't satisfied with the default audio unit can upgrade to a more powerful Bowers & Wilkins setup.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The 2020 M8 Gran Coupe hasn't been crash-tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) at the time of writing this post.

While copious driver-assistance technology is available, everything except forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking costs extra.

  •  Available adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go technology
  •  Available blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert
