2021 BMW M5 Review

Overview

With a twin-turbo V-8 that churns out up to 617 horsepower, the 2021 BMW M5 deserves a more explicit classification than mere sports sedan

Although based on the normal 5-Series and sharing an equally elegant interior, the mighty Bimmer is transformed by the company's high-performance M division.

2021 BMW M5

Sure, its mission to outrun some of the best sports cars is veiled by its relatively subdued appearance, but simply mat the accelerator and hold on as the M5 blasts ahead like a cruise missile.

Its track-ready hardware also supports impressive handling limits, and its sophisticated all-wheel-drive system also allows juvenile rear-drive sideways shenanigans.

However, the BMW's six-figure price tag might as well be a "no kids allowed" sign, because the 2021 M5 is a machine for well-heeled men and women who covet rockets with four doors.

2021 BMW M5

What's New for 2021?

BMW freshens up the 2021 M5 with a larger grille, restyled front and rear bumpers, and updated headlights and taillights. Inside, the most notable change is a new 12.3-inch touchscreen that replaces last year's 10.25-inch display.

The system also adds Android Auto, cloud-based navigation features, and other improvements. Less obvious are the revised M mode settings, which are now easier to access thanks to being consolidated into a single button.

2021 BMW M5

In addition to several new paint options, the standard brake calipers can now be finished in high-gloss black or red. The Competition model nets a new full Merino leather color scheme, a new Track drive mode, and new shock absorbers.

These dampers benefit from a re-calibrated control system that BMW says should improve ride comfort, especially and at high speeds.

First Look: 2021 BMW M5 Gets Refresh, Same Power, Small Price Hike
2021 BMW M5

Pricing and Which One to Buy

  •  M5: $104,495
  •  M5 Competition: $112,095

Who am I kidding? Despite the increased cost, the M5 Competition is the one to get. Not only does it have an additional 17 horsepower compared with the regular model, it has exclusive chassis components and tuning that maximize its performance and handling.

After all, if I're spending six figures on a sports sedan, I want the best version.

    2021 BMW M5

The M5 Comp. also has 20-inch wheels, extra black exterior accents, and a standard M Sport exhaust system that increases the volume of the engine's soundtrack.

While every model has a smorgasbord of desirable features, I'd further upgrade our M5 with the Executive package.

This adds a 360-degree camera system, ventilated front-seat cushions with built-in massagers, heated front and rear seats, parking sensors at both ends, power-operated rear window shades, self-parking assist, and soft-close automatic doors.

    2021 BMW M5

    Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Sporting a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 with 600 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque, the M5 is mighty quick. it launches to 60 mph in 2.8 seconds and snapped off a 10.9-second quarter-mile time at 129 mph; top speed is a governor-limited 163 mph.

An even more powerful M5 Competition model is now available and makes 617 horsepower. It proved to be quicker than the regular M5 on a real racetrack.

    2021 BMW M5

The M5 faithful will lament the discontinued manual gearbox and unfamiliar all-wheel-drive system, but this Bimmer has a high-tech drive-train that can send 100 percent of power to the rear wheels for pure rear-drive personality.

Driving enjoyment is maximized here with lively and direct steering, a well-controlled (borderline stiff) ride, and heroic cornering grip. That doesn't mean the M5 can't also do duty as a luxury sedan: In Comfort mode, it cruises placidly, and the cabin is whisper quiet.

    2021 BMW M5

    Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

Although the EPA hasn't announced fuel-economy ratings for the 2021 M5, I expect them to carry over from the previous model year.

The government estimates the 2020 M5 and its Competition variant will earn 15 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway.

Both figures are worse than the Porsche Panamera Turbo (18 mpg city and 25 highway) and similar to the Mercedes-AMG E63 S sedan (15 mpg city and 25 highway).

    2021 BMW M5

    Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The M5 has an elegant leather interior with supple and supportive sport seats.

The driver's seating position is optimized for performance-style driving, and BMW hasn't gone the all-touchscreen route that many of its rivals have, so making changes to the air conditioning or adjusting the radio during driving causes little distraction.

    2021 BMW M5

There's also a slew of desirable standard features that include customizable ambient interior lighting, a heated steering wheel, heated front seats, and a power-adjustable steering column.

Further options include ventilated front seats with massage functions, heated rear seats, and four-zone automatic climate control. Along with useful interior cubby storage, the M5's trunk manages to fit six carry-on suitcases.

    Infotainment and Connectivity

The M5's large 12.3-inch touchscreen display runs BMW's latest iDrive infotainment software, sits atop the dash to the right of the driver's sight-lines, and is primarily controlled by a rotary knob on the center console.

The system includes standard Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. There's also a 16-speaker, 600-watt Harman/Kardon audio system and wireless device charging on all models.

Those who want even fancier features can opt for the optional rear-seat entertainment system and 16-speaker, 1400-watt Bowers & Wilkins sound system.

    2021 BMW M5

    Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The 2021 M5 hasn't been crash-tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The sports sedan does offer a wide variety of standard driver-assistance technology, such as automatic high-beams and blind-spot monitoring.

    Key safety features include:

    •  Standard forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking
    •  Standard lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist
    •  Available cruise control with stop-and-go technology
    • 2021 BMW M5

    Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

BMW provides a limited warranty and power-train protection that aligns with luxury rivals. Its complimentary scheduled maintenance is shorter than what Jaguar offers, but BMW's plan still ranks among the best.

    •  Limited warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
    •  Power-train warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
    •  Complimentary maintenance is covered for three years or 36,000 miles.

    2021 Mercedes-AMG E63 S Review

    2021 Mercedes-AMG E63 S

    Overview

The 2021 Mercedes-AMG E63 S sedan is the materialization of pure affluence crossed with rapturous performance. It's based on the regular Mercedes-Benz E-class, but the E63 S is actually a more powerful version of the AMG E53.

However, this significantly more expensive sibling features a fire-breathing 603-hp twin-turbo V-8 that helps it accelerate with breathtaking speed.

    2021 Mercedes-AMG E63 S

Plus, the E63 S's talented all-wheel-drive system has a Drift mode that routes all of the engine's power to the rear wheels for entertaining sideways action.

Of course, this mightiest E is hardly meant for adolescent indulgences. Its rowdy soundtrack and incredible handling make it a machine that can intimidate and challenge even the most exotic cars.

And once those opponents are left stunned, the 2021 E63 S sedan pampers its passengers like a five-star resort.

    2021 Mercedes-AMG E63 S

    What's New for 2021?

For 2021, Mercedes refreshes the E63 S's appearance and gives the sedan some new features.

The most notable visual change is the reshaped grille design, which now features 12 vertical slats and a larger Mercedes emblem.

    2021 Mercedes-AMG E63 S

It also adds revised headlights and taillights, new 20-inch wheels with a more aerodynamic design, and a restyled rear diffuser. Inside, the E63 S adds a new steering wheel with larger paddle shifters.

The infotainment system also adopts the latest MBUX interface. Finally, AMG retunes the sedan's suspension to supposedly make the ride more comfortable.

    2021 Mercedes-AMG E63 S

Pricing and Which One to Buy

    •  E63 S: $109,000 (est.)

Mercedes hasn't said how much the 2021 E63 S sedan will cost when it goes on sale, but I don't think it'll be much more than its current starting price.

With that said, My preferred version would be equipped with options that further enhance its luxurious persona.

These include the Exterior Lighting package that brings automatic high-beams and headlights that work to maximize illumination, even around corners.

      2021 Mercedes-AMG E63 S

I also like the Warmth and Comfort and Acoustic Comfort packages.

Together they add a heated steering wheel, heated front armrests, rapid-heating elements to the front seats, and additional sound-deadening materials that help keep the cabin as quiet as a library.

My favorite individual options include the three-zone automatic climate control, heated rear seats, head-up display, massaging front seats, and the soft-close doors.

      Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The E63 S's powerful twin-turbo 603-hp V-8 engine is a mild-mannered partner and a maniacal monster all wrapped up into one.

Left in Comfort mode, the engine and nine-speed automatic transmission react with stoicism and smoothness. Select any of the sportier drive modes and the power-train unleashes relentless fury. Gear-changes are lightning fast, and the engine's 627 lb-ft of torque tears the tires with rampant rage.

      2021 Mercedes-AMG E63 S

The E63 S charges to 60 mph in a mere 2.8 seconds and finishes up the quarter-mile in 10.9 seconds at 128 mph. Despite being saddled with a pair of turbochargers, the 4.0-liter V-8 sounds almost as wonderful as AMG's naturally aspirated V-8 engines of yore.

While not as supple as the regular E-class, the E63's ride is soft enough in its default setting that daily driving is certainly a possibility.

      2021 Mercedes-AMG E63 S

Toggle the springs to the Sport or Sport+ setting, however, and the E63 is liable to shake out the fillings in your teeth.

However, Push the E63 to its handling limits, and you'll be greatly rewarded. There's more cornering grip here than any of the E63's impressive competitors can muster—even the BMW M5. Adding to the thrill is the AMG's steering, which is well weighted and highly communicative.

      Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

Given the mind-expanding performance of the E63 S, the mighty Mercedes-AMG is impressively fuel efficient.

But that doesn't mean it's an abstemious consumer of fuel. While the EPA hasn't announced fuel-economy ratings for the 2021 model, I don't expect its figures to change much—if at all—from the previous model year.

The government estimates the 2020 E63 S sedan will earn 15 mpg city and 23 mpg highway.

      2021 Mercedes-AMG E63 S

      Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

As in other E-class models, the E63's interior is made of high-quality materials that are pieced together with the care and craftsmanship of a handbag by Hermès.

Largely devoid of buttons, the E63's dashboard is anchored by a row of knurled-aluminum switches for adjusting the standard dual-zone automatic climate-control system.

      2021 Mercedes-AMG E63 S

      2021 Mercedes-AMG E63 S

A chunky three-spoke steering wheel features a flat bottom and a pair of big paddle shifters.

Although the E63's trunk room is less than that of rivals such as the Porsche Panamera Turbo, It still manages to fit five carry-on suitcases inside.

That number is only one less than the Porsche, which is technically a hatchback and sports a visibly larger cargo area.

      Infotainment and Connectivity

A pair of 12.3-inch screens dominate the upper dashboard—one for the digital gauge cluster and another for the infotainment system.

The interface is controlled by the brand's ubiquitous console-mounted control knob, with a touch-pad on top that allows users to input commands by swiping a finger and offers a degree of added functionality.

Alas, It is fussy to use and easy to brush accidentally. The driver can also interact with the two screens by using a pair of touch-sensitive controls on the steering wheel.

Standard features include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, a Burmester audio system, and wireless phone charging.

      2021 Mercedes-AMG E63 S

      Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The 2021 E63 S sedan hasn't been tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

We're also disappointed that Mercedes charges customers extra for most driver-assistance technology

      2021 Mercedes-AMG E63 S

      Key safety features include:

      •  Standard forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking
      •  Available lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist
      •  Available adaptive cruise control

      • 2021 Mercedes-AMG E63 S

      Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Although its warranty is class competitive, we continue to be befuddled by Mercedes-AMG's decision to forgo complimentary scheduled service—something nearly all of its rivals such as BMW, Jaguar, and Volvo offer.

      •  Limited warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
      •  Power-train warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
      •  No complimentary scheduled maintenance.

      2020 Volvo S60 Review

      2020 Volvo S60

      Overview

Unlike some rival sedans that compromise luxury for performance and vice-versa, the 2020 Volvo S60 gracefully balances both virtues.

Its distinct yet elegant exterior is offset by an inviting interior that is sophisticated and spacious. Its array of desirable features cover the gamut from high-class to high-tech.

      2020 Volvo S60

Likewise, the Swedish automaker hasn't neglected its penchant for safety with myriad standard and optional driver-assistance technology

The Volvo sedan also offers three distinct power-train choices, which include a potent plug-in-hybrid variant that also powers its sportiest model.

Regardless, every 2020 S60 is rewarding to drive and comforting to ride in.

      2020 Volvo S60

      What's New for 2020?

Volvo makes several changes to the 2020 S60 lineup that include more standard features, new options, and a larger 11.6-kWh battery pack for the plug-in hybrid.

All S60s now come standard with a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. R-Design models add standard four-zone climate control, enhanced ambient interior lighting, and a tailored dashboard.

      2020 Volvo S60

The top-tier Polestar S60 comes standard with a Bowers and Wilkins sound system. Sedans with the semi-autonomous Pilot Assist feature add haptic feedback, and automatic brake hold now comes standard on models with blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.

The updates are rounded out by a new interior upholstery option and several new paint colors.

      2020 Volvo S60

Pricing and Which One to Buy

      • Momentum: $37,045
      • R-Design: $43,895
      • Inscription: $43,895
      • Polestar Engineered: $65,795

The 2020 S60 lineup is split into four different trim levels and three different power-trains. The base Momentum isn't available as a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) and the top-of-the-line Polestar Engineered is PHEV-only.

Likewise, there's a 250-hp, front-drive T5 model and a 316-hp, all-wheel-drive T6 model. I prefer the latter setup on the sporty R-Design trim, which adds $5000 to its starting price.

Its standard features include blind-spot monitoring, front and rear parking sensors, a Harman/Kardon audio system, leather upholstery, added front-seat adjustments and bolsters, a power-operated trunklid, unique exterior trim, and more.

I'd also add the Heated Rear Seats and Heated Steering Wheel package as well as the Advanced package.

It includes a 360-degree camera system, head-up display, adaptive LED headlights, and a semi-autonomous drive mode.

        2020 Volvo S60

        Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The base S60 T5 has a 250-hp turbocharged four-cylinder that powers the front wheels; the T6 version has standard all-wheel drive and gains 66 horsepower courtesy of its additional supercharger.

Power increases to 400 horsepower on the all-wheel-drive T8 plug-in hybrid, and the top-of-the-line T8 Polestar Engineered is even sportier. Its plug-in-hybrid power-train makes 415 horsepower and 494 lb-ft of torque and features all-wheel drive.

Along with adaptive dampers and exclusive 19-inch wheels, the Polestar edition is solely available as part of the Care by Volvo subscription plan.

The higher-spec S60 trim levels, The steering proved to be quick and precise along twisty roads, and there is a remarkable amount of cornering grip.

Likewise, both the 316-hp T6 model and the powerful Polestar Engineered were effectively quick and responsive.

        Range, Charging, and Battery Life

The 2020 S60 T8 plug-in hybrid features an 11.6-kWh battery pack that provides 22 miles of all-electric driving range.

While its battery is larger than the previous model year, it doesn't lead to a longer driving range. The T8 also can be charged at home or at charging stations.

        2020 Volvo S60

        Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

The 2020 S60 has three separate EPA ratings that correspond with its different power-train configurations. The front-drive T5 models are rated at 23 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway.

The more powerful, all-wheel-drive T6 versions drop to 21 mpg city and 32 mpg highway. The T8 plug-in hybrid is expected to earn 28 mpg city and 33 mpg highway.

        2020 Volvo S60

        Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Volvo flaunts its superb build quality inside the S60, which displays upscale materials throughout and an uncommon attention to detail.

The design is undeniably forward-thinking and littered with flourishes such as jeweled switch-gear and supremely comfortably seats.

        2020 Volvo S60

Its deluxe features include a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, ambient interior lighting, a head-up display, massaging front seats, and more.

Not only are front-seat passengers cosseted by comfortable and supportive buckets, those in the back seat will appreciate its generous legroom and headroom.

        2020 Volvo S60

        2020 Volvo S60

Interior cubby space is highlighted by useful door pockets and a center console that boasts a tray with a retractable cover and a handy bin below the armrest.

It also manages to fit five carry-on suitcases in the S60's trunk, which was one more than the Jaguar XE but one less than the BMW 3-series.

        Infotainment and Connectivity

Every 2020 S60 features a tablet-style Sensus infotainment system that looks stylish but can be frustrating to operate.

That's because some of its touch-sensitive icons are hard to select, and some functions such as the climate controls can be distracting to use.

Otherwise, the system benefits from a large volume knob and a useful home button. Every model has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration as standard, but a Bowers and Wilkins premium audio system is available, too.

        2020 Volvo S60

        Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The S60 hasn't been crash-tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), but it was named a Top Safety Pick+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

The sultry sedan also has a variety of driver-assistance technology that is standard and optional.

        Key safety features include:

        •  Standard forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking
        •  Standard lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist
        •  Available adaptive cruise control

        • 2020 Volvo S60

          Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Volvo's limited and power-train warranty line up exactly with its luxury rivals. While its complimentary scheduled maintenance covers the same lengthy period as BMW, both are still behind Jaguar's impressive coverage.

          •  Limited warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
          •  Power-train warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
          •  Hybrid components are covered for 8 years or 100,000
          •  Complimentary scheduled maintenance is covered for 3 years or 36,000 miles.
