2020 Volvo S60 Review

2020 Volvo S60

Overview

Unlike some rival sedans that compromise luxury for performance and vice-versa, the 2020 Volvo S60 gracefully balances both virtues.

Its distinct yet elegant exterior is offset by an inviting interior that is sophisticated and spacious. Its array of desirable features cover the gamut from high-class to high-tech.

Likewise, the Swedish automaker hasn't neglected its penchant for safety with myriad standard and optional driver-assistance technology

The Volvo sedan also offers three distinct power-train choices, which include a potent plug-in-hybrid variant that also powers its sportiest model.

Regardless, every 2020 S60 is rewarding to drive and comforting to ride in.

What's New for 2020?

Volvo makes several changes to the 2020 S60 lineup that include more standard features, new options, and a larger 11.6-kWh battery pack for the plug-in hybrid.

All S60s now come standard with a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. R-Design models add standard four-zone climate control, enhanced ambient interior lighting, and a tailored dashboard.

The top-tier Polestar S60 comes standard with a Bowers and Wilkins sound system. Sedans with the semi-autonomous Pilot Assist feature add haptic feedback, and automatic brake hold now comes standard on models with blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.

The updates are rounded out by a new interior upholstery option and several new paint colors.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

  • Momentum: $37,045
  • R-Design: $43,895
  • Inscription: $43,895
  • Polestar Engineered: $65,795

The 2020 S60 lineup is split into four different trim levels and three different power-trains. The base Momentum isn't available as a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) and the top-of-the-line Polestar Engineered is PHEV-only.

Likewise, there's a 250-hp, front-drive T5 model and a 316-hp, all-wheel-drive T6 model. I prefer the latter setup on the sporty R-Design trim, which adds $5000 to its starting price.

Its standard features include blind-spot monitoring, front and rear parking sensors, a Harman/Kardon audio system, leather upholstery, added front-seat adjustments and bolsters, a power-operated trunklid, unique exterior trim, and more.

I'd also add the Heated Rear Seats and Heated Steering Wheel package as well as the Advanced package.

It includes a 360-degree camera system, head-up display, adaptive LED headlights, and a semi-autonomous drive mode.

    Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The base S60 T5 has a 250-hp turbocharged four-cylinder that powers the front wheels; the T6 version has standard all-wheel drive and gains 66 horsepower courtesy of its additional supercharger.

Power increases to 400 horsepower on the all-wheel-drive T8 plug-in hybrid, and the top-of-the-line T8 Polestar Engineered is even sportier. Its plug-in-hybrid power-train makes 415 horsepower and 494 lb-ft of torque and features all-wheel drive.

Along with adaptive dampers and exclusive 19-inch wheels, the Polestar edition is solely available as part of the Care by Volvo subscription plan.

The higher-spec S60 trim levels, The steering proved to be quick and precise along twisty roads, and there is a remarkable amount of cornering grip.

Likewise, both the 316-hp T6 model and the powerful Polestar Engineered were effectively quick and responsive.

    Range, Charging, and Battery Life

The 2020 S60 T8 plug-in hybrid features an 11.6-kWh battery pack that provides 22 miles of all-electric driving range.

While its battery is larger than the previous model year, it doesn't lead to a longer driving range. The T8 also can be charged at home or at charging stations.

    Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

The 2020 S60 has three separate EPA ratings that correspond with its different power-train configurations. The front-drive T5 models are rated at 23 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway.

The more powerful, all-wheel-drive T6 versions drop to 21 mpg city and 32 mpg highway. The T8 plug-in hybrid is expected to earn 28 mpg city and 33 mpg highway.

    Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Volvo flaunts its superb build quality inside the S60, which displays upscale materials throughout and an uncommon attention to detail.

The design is undeniably forward-thinking and littered with flourishes such as jeweled switch-gear and supremely comfortably seats.

Its deluxe features include a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, ambient interior lighting, a head-up display, massaging front seats, and more.

Not only are front-seat passengers cosseted by comfortable and supportive buckets, those in the back seat will appreciate its generous legroom and headroom.

Interior cubby space is highlighted by useful door pockets and a center console that boasts a tray with a retractable cover and a handy bin below the armrest.

It also manages to fit five carry-on suitcases in the S60's trunk, which was one more than the Jaguar XE but one less than the BMW 3-series.

    Infotainment and Connectivity

Every 2020 S60 features a tablet-style Sensus infotainment system that looks stylish but can be frustrating to operate.

That's because some of its touch-sensitive icons are hard to select, and some functions such as the climate controls can be distracting to use.

Otherwise, the system benefits from a large volume knob and a useful home button. Every model has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration as standard, but a Bowers and Wilkins premium audio system is available, too.

    Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The S60 hasn't been crash-tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), but it was named a Top Safety Pick+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

The sultry sedan also has a variety of driver-assistance technology that is standard and optional.

    Key safety features include:

    •  Standard forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking
    •  Standard lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist
    •  Available adaptive cruise control

      Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Volvo's limited and power-train warranty line up exactly with its luxury rivals. While its complimentary scheduled maintenance covers the same lengthy period as BMW, both are still behind Jaguar's impressive coverage.

      •  Limited warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
      •  Power-train warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
      •  Hybrid components are covered for 8 years or 100,000
      •  Complimentary scheduled maintenance is covered for 3 years or 36,000 miles.
