2021 Mini Cooper Countryman Review

2021 Mini Cooper Countryman

            Overview

The 2021 Mini Cooper Countryman is basically a supersized version of the little cars that made the British brand famous for being fun to drive.

While this maximum Mini isn't as quick or nimble as its tinier siblings, it still maintains the company's quirky character. It also provides the largest amount of cargo-and-passenger space found in any Mini, which makes it especially useful for small families.

2021 Mini Cooper Countryman

With a trio of ascending power-trains that include a plug-in hybrid, the Countryman has wide range of performance.

It's considered a subcompact crossover, but it drives more like a station wagon. The cabin is decorated with peculiar-to-Mini details, and the company provides a plethora of personalization options.

Although its uneven ride quality and missing driver assists detract from the experience, the 2021 Countryman offers a lot of character and convenience.

What's New for 2021?

The biggest Mini gets a smattering of updates for 2021. Its unmistakable appearance is now even more distinctive due to a restyled front end.

LED lighting elements promote its British heritage through a Union Jack motif on the taillights. There's now a Piano Black Exterior option that replaces the Mini's chrome trim with gloss-black pieces.

2021 Mini Cooper Countryman

A set of fresh wheel designs as well as White Silver and Sage Green metallic paint colors are new too. Inside, the infotainment system's housing is redesigned with gloss-black material.

The Countryman is also now compatible with Amazon Alexa voice assistant. There's a new version of the fancy MINI Yours Interior Style, a new range of leather trims and interior surfaces, and a newly optional digital gauge cluster that's mounted on the steering column.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

Mini hasn't said how much the 2021 models will cost, but I don't expect the mild updates create that much of an upcharge.

With that said, the additional performance and the likely small increase in starting price make the Cooper S model my preferred choice.

Its turbocharged four-cylinder provides an extra 55 horsepower compared with the regular Countryman's three-cylinder engine.

2021 Mini Cooper Countryman

The S also comes standard with 18-inch wheels, a panoramic sunroof, rear parking sensors, and more supportive sport seats up front. I like the added bad-weather traction of the optional ALL4 all-wheel drive system and would select the mid-level Signature trim.

It adds an 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, dual-zone automatic climate control, forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking, heated seats, and passive entry.

Mini offers all-season tires as a replacement for the standard performance set, but I'd stick with the latter and buy a separate set of winter tires for the cold and slippery season.

The Driver Assistance package would also make our list, because it includes adaptive cruise control and a head-up display.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Countryman offers several poweritrain combinations and either standard front- or optional all-wheel drive. Apart from the plug-in model, front-drive versions feature a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission; those with all-wheel-drive have an eight-speed automatic.

The base engine is a 134-hp turbocharged three-cylinder that simply lacks the power to move the Countryman's 3,300-plus pounds with any authority. The Cooper S model is equipped with a more powerful 189-hp turbocharged four-cylinder. The plug-in hybrid model (known as the Cooper S E) is the quickest Countryman according to research, but it's also the most expensive.

2021 Mini Cooper Countryman

It uses a version of the three-cylinder gas engine driving the front wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission in combination with a rear-drive electric motor fed by a 9.6-kWh battery pack. It can charge at either a 120-volt or a 240-volt outlet.

A full charge requires seven hours on standard 120-volt house current and a bit more than three hours on 240 volts. Unlike other Mini models, the Countryman never feels light or tossable from behind the wheel. Its stoic disposition isn't a bad thing; it's just different from other Minis, which are unreservedly playful.

Fuel Economy

While the EPA hasn't released fuel-economy ratings for the 2021 Countryman at the time of writing this post, I don't expect them to change from last year's estimates. The gas-powered three-cylinder and four-cylinder models have nearly identical city and highway ratings.

The front-drive Cooper and Cooper S also have a higher combined EPA fuel economy rating than the plug-in hybrid at 29 mpg combined and 28 combined, respectively; oddly, the hybrid Countryman is rated at 27 mpg combined.

The ALL4 AWD versions of the base and S Countryman models have 1-2 mpg lower EPA highway ratings than the front-drive versions but their combined ratings are similar.

The ALL4 Cooper S is rated at 26 mpg combined. With its upgraded battery pack, the Mini Countryman S E is EPA rated for 16 miles of electric-only range.

2021 Mini Cooper Countryman

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The Countryman's interior is typically Mini in its design, including gimmicky elements such as an infotainment system set in a large circular housing in the center of the dash and toggle switches for controlling items such as the interior lights, ignition, and the standard automatic stop/start system.

2021 Mini Cooper Countryman

If you can get past the whimsical design, there's a lot to like about the Countryman's cabin, which is assembled from high-quality materials and offers adequate passenger space.

The rear bench seat offers enough space for long-haul comfort, although adding a rear-seat armrest requires the purchase of the Convenience package.

2021 Mini Cooper Countryman

A number of storage nooks provide the Countryman with sufficient space for stashing smaller items; however, the cargo area offers less space than some smaller competitors.

2021 Mini Cooper Countryman

The Countryman does have a large underfloor storage space in the rear but opting for the available space-saver spare tire takes up most of that.

2021 Mini Cooper Countryman

Infotainment and Connectivity

Although the Countryman comes standard with a 6.5-inch screen for its infotainment system, an 8.8-inch touchscreen setup with Apple CarPlay capability and navigation is available as part of a package.

Controlled by either touch inputs, a control knob behind the shifter, or with voice commands, the system boasts logical menu structures and high-quality graphics.

2021 Mini Cooper Countryman

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The 2021 Countryman hasn't been tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) at the time of writing this post.

While it comes standard with eight airbags, the Mini lacks available driver-assistance technologies such as lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and blind-spot monitoring.

2021 Mini Cooper Countryman

Key safety features include:

  •  Standard forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking
  •  Available adaptive cruise control
  •  Available self-parking assist
  • 2021 Mini Cooper Countryman

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Mini's warranty is mostly average. However, the Countryman and its BMW X1 cousin have the best corrosion warranty and complimentary scheduled maintenance in their class.

  •  Limited warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
  •  Power-train warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
  •  Complimentary maintenance is covered for three years or 36,000 miles.

2021 Cadillac XT4 Review

2021 Cadillac XT4

Overview

With no shortage of choices in the small-luxury SUV marketplace, the Cadillac XT4 will appeal to buyers who value a sharp-edged design, a spacious interior, and a traditionally upright, SUV-like driving position.

All models come with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine and either front- or all-wheel drive.

2021 Cadillac XT4

The cabin has a modern appearance with plenty of standard and optional technology and infotainment features, but overall refinement isn't quite on the same level as the XT4's key rivals, which includes the Audi Q3, the BMW X1, and the Mercedes-Benz GLA-class.

If you overlook its down-market interior materials, the XT4 remains a practical and stylish option in this popular segment.

2021 Cadillac XT4

What's New for 2021?

Cadillac has made only a few minor changes to the XT4 for 2021, starting with the base Luxury trim, which receives a new standard power rear lift-gate and the option of leather upholstery.

An optional Driver Awareness package that includes automatic high-beam headlamps and lane-keeping assist has also been added to the Luxury trim.

2021 Cadillac XT4

The Sport trim receives red-painted brake calipers, and both it and the Premium Luxury model come with new exterior mirrors with integrated turn signals.

Two new colors join the available palette: Infrared Tintcoat and Wave Metallic.

2021 Cadillac XT4

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The Cadillac XT4 base price is $36,790, and all-wheel drive adds $2500 to every model for those who want it.

The Premium Luxury and Sport models both cost almost the same, but since the former doesn't live up to its name, and the latter is even better to drive, I'd recommend the XT4 Sport.

2021 Cadillac XT4

It has unique wheel designs, blacked-out exterior trim, and exclusive interior accents. The Sport model also has an exclusive active suspension with adaptive dampers and better-bolstered front seats.

To that I'd add the Comfort and Convenience package (leather interior, ventilated and massaging front seats, etc.) and choose the Active Sport suspension (adaptive dampers) to avoid the ride-quality-reducing 20-inch wheels that are required with the Sport Dynamics package.

2021 Cadillac XT4

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Under the hood of all XT4s is a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 237 horsepower. It pairs with a nine-speed automatic transmission and front- or all-wheel drive.

The 2019 XT4 Sport sashays its way to 60 mph in a lackluster 7.8 seconds—1.5 seconds behind the X1.

2021 Cadillac XT4

Despite the difference, the XT4 feels spry around town and when merging onto the highway. Ignore Cadillac's assertion of sportiness with the XT4. It's more of a boulevard cruiser than a sports car.

The ride is okay, so long as the road is relatively smooth. Rough stretches of asphalt translate plenty of vibrations and sharp impacts into the cabin, especially when riding on the optional 20-inch wheels. The steering is similarly disappointing not in its action.

2021 Cadillac XT4

Fuel Economy

Despite its fuel-saving cylinder-deactivation capability, the XT4 earns wholly average EPA fuel-economy estimates, with front-wheel-drive variants reaching 30 mpg on the highway and all-wheel-drive vehicle reaching 29 mpg.

2021 Cadillac XT4

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The XT4's interior, while comfortable and spacious, isn't as high-class as  in the premium segment.

2021 Cadillac XT4

The dashboard and upper door panels are covered in a stitched, faux-leather wrap, but lower on the doors and center console, cheaper, sharp-edged plastic persists.

2021 Cadillac XT4

The buttons and switches look and feel as though they're likely to be shared with less expensive offerings in the General Motors portfolio.

2021 Cadillac XT4

Space is great for the front-seat occupants and actually pretty decent in the back seat, too. As with its passenger compartment, the XT4's cargo room is spacious.

2021 Cadillac XT4

Infotainment and Connectivity

All XT4 models come with an 8.0-inch infotainment system with Cadillac's CUE software. The touchscreen looks nice and crisp and is tucked slightly into the dashboard.

The interface is reasonably easy to use, too, and in addition to touching the screen, the user can also interact via a console-mounted knob.

Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, an onboard Wi-Fi hotspot, and a seven-speaker audio system are all standard; navigation is optional, as is a 13-speaker Bose audio system.

Selecting the available Technology package (Premium Luxury and Sport models only) adds a digital gauge cluster, a head-up display, and a wireless smartphone-charging pad.

2021 Cadillac XT4

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The XT4 has earned a five-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) but the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) hasn't completed its testing at the time of writing this post.

Cadillac does offer it with a plethora of driver-assistance features, but few of them are standard fare.

2021 Cadillac XT4

Key safety features include:

  •  Standard forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking
  •  Available blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert
  •  Available adaptive cruise control

  • 2021 Cadillac XT4

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

The Cadillac warranty outdoes several of its rivals with power-train coverage that lasts six years or 70,000 miles. Cadillac offers one free maintenance visit with the purchase of any 2021 model.

  •  Limited warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
  •  Power-train warranty covers 6 years or 70,000 miles
  •  Complimentary maintenance is covered for one year or 12,000 miles.

2021 Lexus NX Review

2021 Lexus NX

Overview

If you're shopping for a small luxury SUV and finding most of the offerings to be more like hatchback cars than truly trucky, the 2021 Lexus NX may tick the right boxes.

While rivals such as the Mercedes-Benz GLA-class and Lexus's own UX merely give the illusion of being an SUV, the NX has the ride height and overall driving experience of the real thing.

2021 Lexus NX

The NX knows how to pamper its occupants too, with a spacious cabin and an overall sense of luxury, even though it's been around for a while compared to newer, more modern rivals such as the Cadillac XT4 and 2021 Volvo XC40

2021 Lexus NX

Cargo space is plentiful, and Lexus offers an optional hybrid power-train for those seeking maximum fuel efficiency—just don't expect sporty handling from any NX model.

2021 Lexus NX

What's New for 2021?

Even though the subcompact NX is on the far side of the age curve, Lexus hasn't made any major changes to it for 2021.

Blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is now standard, as are power-folding exterior mirrors with an auto-dimming function.

2021 Lexus NX

Inside, Lexus has tweaked the NX's steering wheel and tachometer designs.

Opting for the upgraded Mark Levinson stereo system now includes a Mark Levinson-branded amplifier. And a new color joins the options sheet: Nori Green Pearl.

2021 Lexus NX

Pricing and Which One to Buy

Not only does the NX300 F Sport look the coolest, it's also the best to drive, with a standard adaptive suspension and G-force and turbo-boost gauges.

I think its extra attitude is worth the upgrade, plus it adds the most comfortable and supportive sport seats in the segment. Nonhybrid models come standard with front-wheel drive, so if you want all-wheel drive, plan to add $1400 to the bottom line.

2021 Lexus NX

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

While its acceleration won't blow the doors off any stoplight challengers, the 2021 NX should offer enough power for the casual driver.

The NX300 (formerly known as the NX200t) comes with a 235-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, a six-speed automatic, and front-wheel drive; all-wheel drive is also available. An all-wheel-drive F Sport model, it performs a class-average 6.9-second zero-to-60-mph time.

2021 Lexus NX

The Mercedes-Benz GLA250 4Matic manages to sprint to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds, making the NX seem positively sluggish. It's a different story on the road.

The NX doesn't feel lethargic pulling into traffic, the engine's power delivery is linear and predictable, and once the turbo kicks in, it's even peppier.

The hybrid power-train provides even less pep, but its fuel economy is measurably improved.

2021 Lexus NX

While the NX isn't as fun on a twisty road as the BMW X1 or the GLA250, its light steering makes it easy to pilot around town.

Its center of gravity is higher than in either of those competitors, lending it a top-heavy feel when cornering.

2021 Lexus NX

Fuel Economy

Being the tallest and most SUV-like crossover in this segment means the gas-powered NX isn't as efficient as its lower-slung rivals.

The hybrid power-train nets considerable gains at the pump, but its acceleration performance is hindered by its weaker horsepower output.

2021 Lexus NX

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The NX's high-quality interior is a retreat and its front seats are among the most comfortable, but it's beginning to show its age against newer, more contemporary rivals such as the Audi Q3 and the Mercedes-Benz GLB-class.

2021 Lexus NX

Its passenger space may not be as roomy as in some rivals and its exterior styling comes with large blind spots. With less headroom than the X1, the Lexus NX might feel tight for passengers in both the front and back seats.

2021 Lexus NX

Legroom is a different story, where the Lexus delivers 42.8 inches of stretch-out space for front-seat occupants. Rear-seat legroom is also above average for the class.

2021 Lexus NX

Second-row seats split and fold in a 60/40 configuration, but when they are flipped down, they don't lie flat. The rear seats offer recline adjustability and can be optioned with a power-folding feature throughout the lineup.

2021 Lexus NX

Infotainment and Connectivity

Lexus offers a comprehensive list of standard and optional connectivity features in the NX, and the infotainment system's software is easy to learn.

Its touchpad interactivity. An 8.0-inch display is standard but the larger, optional, 10.3-inch display is the one I prefer. No matter the display, Lexus offers Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, and a Wi-Fi hotspot as standard equipment.

2021 Lexus NX

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The NX earns great marks from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the latter of which gave the NX a Top Safety Pick+ award.

The NX's standard driver-assistance features provide an extra layer of protection. The only thing holding the Lexus back from safety greatness is a better backup camera: the current one, while useful, has a disappointingly low resolution.

2021 Lexus NX

Key safety features include:

  •  Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
  •  Standard lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist
  •  Standard adaptive cruise control
  • 2021 Lexus NX

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Lexus offers one of the more comprehensive protection packages in the industry. Both the Volvo XC40 and the BMW X1 come with standard complimentary scheduled maintenance plans that span three years. Lexus provides that benefit for just one year, however.

  •  Limited warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
  •  Power-train warranty covers 6 years or 70,000 miles
  • Complimentary maintenance is covered for 1 year or 10,000 miles.
