2021 Porsche Cayenne Review

2021 Porsche Cayenne

Overview

The 2021 Porsche Cayenne is an SUV by design but a sports car by nature. This largest of Porsches provides a diverse range of power-trains that include a pair of proficient V-6s, a modern plug-in hybrid, and a thundering twin-turbo V-8.

Of course, power is pointless if it isn't properly harnessed, and the Cayenne's innate athleticism and sublime handling traits ensure it lives up to the German brand's illustrious history. Its spacious interior is basically a canvas for customization thanks to Porsche's extensive roster of available options.

While these features can quickly inflate its price, and we think some should be standard, at least they're discretional. Besides, the 2021 Cayenne—and its coupe counterpart (reviewed separately)—are mid-size luxury crossovers that fully engage driving enthusiasts. That makes them our favorite choice.

What's New for 2021?

Porsche spices up the 2021 Cayenne lineup with the return of the GTS model. While the company hasn't announced changes for the rest of the lineup, we now know that the GTS will have a 460-hp twin-turbo V-8.

Along with more desirable standard features, it'll also benefit from a lowered suspension and other performance hardware. The 2021 GTS is the top-of-the-line version of the regular Cayenne, but it's just as much a gateway to the high-powered Turbo variants (reviewed separately).

Pricing and Which One to Buy

  •  Cayenne: $69,000 (est.)
  •  Cayenne E-Hybrid: $83,000 (est.)
  •  Cayenne S: $86,000 (est.)
  •  Cayenne GTS: $108,650

The new GTS is a compelling option since it's the only non-Turbo variant with a V-8. However, we're very fond of the normal Cayenne, which is about $40,000 cheaper and still impressively quick.

It already comes with a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 10-speaker stereo, and a Wi-Fi hotspot—among other popular equipment—and our preferred configuration would expand upon that with thoughtful options.

    2021 Porsche Cayenne

We'd add the Premium package that includes 14-way power front seats, adaptive LED headlights, blind-spot monitoring, a more powerful Bose surround-sound system, hands-free passive entry, heated front seats, and a panoramic sunroof.

We'd also optimize its on-road performance and off-road capabilities with the Sport Chrono package (expanded drive modes and launch control, the Off-Road package (extra underbody protection and additional displays), and the adaptive air suspension.

Individual options that would improve its style and increase its luxury include a set of 20-inch wheels, four-zone climate control, a heated steering wheel, a head-up display, massaging front seats, and soft-close doors.

    Engine, Transmission, and Performance

If you want more performance than the base Cayenne delivers, the Cayenne S offers an even zestier setup courtesy of its 434-hp twin-turbo 2.9-liter V-6. It bolts to 60 mph in just 4.2 seconds.

Its electric motor and turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 make a combined 455 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. Its 14.1-kWh battery pack can be charged via a standard 3.6-kW onboard charger or an optional 7.2-kW unit.

The new GTS model boasts a 460-hp twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 that promises the best-sounding exhaust note and breathtaking acceleration. The available Sport Chrono package brings selectable drive modes and improves acceleration.

    2021 Porsche Cayenne

All power-plants pair with an astute eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. Porsche attempts to imbue every product with a particular set of skills—specifically those that cater to driving enjoyment. While making anything that weighs more than two tons move gracefully is challenging, the engineers in Stuttgart were successful with the Cayenne.

The S model moves quietly and steadily at highway speeds before seamlessly transitioning to twisty sections, where it showcased surprising athleticism for its size. Most models wear standard 19-inch wheels, but they can be optioned up to 22 inches.

    2021 Porsche Cayenne

The GTS rides on standard 21-inch rims and a lower suspension than the regular models. Most models have performance options that include adaptive dampers with or without an adjustable air suspension, four-wheel steering for improved maneuverability, and active anti-roll bars for flatter cornering.

The Cayenne's brakes can be upgraded to Porsche's tungsten-coated iron rotors (called Porsche Surface Coated Brakes, or PSCB) or costly carbon-ceramic stoppers. The base model we tested had neither setup nor still needed only 159 feet to stop from 70 mph.

    Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

While the EPA hasn't released fuel-economy figures for the 2020 Cayenne lineup, I don't expect the ratings to change from last year. The government estimates the 2020 Cayenne earns 19 mpg city and 23 highway.

The more powerful Cayenne S is rated at 18 mpg city and 22 highway. The base Cayenne's EPA combined fuel economy is slightly behind rivals such as the BMW X4 and the Volvo XC90 when they are equipped with similar power-trains.

The E-Hybrid version should provide the best fuel economy when driving around town, but the EPA hasn't released its estimates for that model.

    Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Porsche essentially provides a blank canvas inside the Cayenne for customers to outfit as they see fit. Everything from the interior trim to the seat-belt colors to the surface materials can be individually selected.

The driver faces a snazzy gauge cluster with an analog tachometer flanked by two 7.0-inch screens that display selectable information. In addition to traditional options such as heated and ventilated front and rear seats, the Cayenne offers desirable upgrades, including more supportive seats, massaging front seats, four-zone climate control, and more.

    2021 Porsche Cayenne

Whereas the rival Audi Q7 and the Volvo XC90 have three rows, the Porsche has only two. Still, its back seat is adjustable and provides plenty of stretch-out space.

The Cayenne entices Porsche enthusiasts with ample passenger capacity and cargo volume, which are obviously far greater than any 911's.

    2021 Porsche Cayenne

It's the largest Porsche SUV and provides 27 cubic feet of cargo room behind the rear seats and up to 60 cubes with the seats folded flat. Interior cubby storage is unremarkable, with most small items seeking refuge in the door pockets or the shallow center-console bin.

Every Cayenne includes a power-operated lift-gate; the optional passive-entry system (called Comfort Access) allows it to be opened or closed with a foot gesture.

    Infotainment and Connectivity

The infotainment system uses a standard 12.3-inch touchscreen mounted in the middle of the dashboard. Its slick interface includes a configurable home menu and many personalized settings.

While the system was responsive and easy to operate during our testing, the screen attracted smudges. A rotary controller would help reduce distractions during driving.

    2021 Porsche Cayenne

Every Cayenne has Porsche Connect Plus, which includes a Wi-Fi hotspot and Apple CarPlay capability (Android Auto is noticeably absent).

A set of upgraded audio systems includes a 14-speaker Bose unit or a much pricier Burmester setup that pumps 1455 watts through 21 speakers. An available rear-seat entertainment system attaches two 10.0-inch displays to the back of the front-seat headrests.

    Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The 2021 Cayenne hasn't been crash tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

However, the Cayenne is available with a bevy of driver-assistance technology to help keep occupants safe. Every model has forward-collision warning and parking sensors at both ends. It even supports night vision with an optional infrared camera.

    Key safety features include:

    •  Available adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go technology
    •  Available blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert
    •  Available lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist

    • 2021 Porsche Cayenne

      Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Porsche provides a competitive limited and power-train warranty. However, both BMW and Volvo provide lengthier coverage for complimentary scheduled maintenance.

      •  Limited warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
      •  Power-train warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
      •  Complimentary maintenance is covered for one year or 10,000 miles.

      2020 Porsche Taycan Review

      2020 Porsche Taycan

      Overview

Porsche's first electric car is a sleek sports sedan that fully lives up to the brand's high-performance reputation.

The 2020 Porsche Taycan (pronounced tie-kahn) delivers incredible acceleration, precise handling, and aggressive styling.

There's some interesting engineering under the skin, too.

The Taycan is the first production electric vehicle to use a two-speed transmission and an 800-volt electrical system, which allow for quicker acceleration and shorter recharge times, respectively.

      2020 Porsche Taycan

In theory, the Taycan is the first real challenger to the Tesla Model S. In practice, the Porsche and Tesla have unique advantages that should steer buyers toward an easier decision.

The Model S offers a much higher range rating—but, it only has a tiny advantage over a Taycan Turbo S—a more practical package, and access to a sprawling network of fast-charging stations.

The Porsche's priority is performance above all else, with interior space as a secondary concern.

      2020 Porsche Taycan

      What's New for 2020?

The Porsche Taycan is all new for 2020. The Turbo and Turbo S are poised to remain the most expensive, most powerful, and best-performing Taycans.

The 4S won't be as quick, but it's possible that it and other future versions may offer better driving range.

2020 Porsche Taycan Electric Car Takes Aim at Tesla - Consumer Reports
      2020 Porsche Taycan

Pricing and Which One to Buy

      •  4S: $105,150
      •  Turbo: $152,250
      •  Turbo S: $186,350

While buying a Porsche is often an exercise in excess, our pick is the cheaper Porsche Taycan 4S. It's plenty quick and is likely to deliver more range on a single charge than the pricier Turbo models.

Porsche's list of optional equipment is longer (and far pricier) than an eight-year-old's Christmas list, which makes choosing the perfect Taycan a very personal affair.

However, all buyers should consider the 150-kW charger that triples the maximum charging power at 400-volt DC fast-charging stations.

        2020 Porsche Taycan

        Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Taycan 4S, Turbo and Turbo S drive all four wheels with two electric motors.

The peak outputs of 522 horsepower (4S with base battery), 563 horsepower (4S with bigger battery), 670 horsepower (Turbo), and 750 (Turbo S) only last for short bursts of 2.5 seconds at a time. After that, all models reduce the output slightly to protect the drive-train from heat.

The shifts of the rear motor's unique two-speed transmission are almost imperceptible during regular driving. But activate launch control, and the Porsche knocks out a one-two shift that is as quick and as hard as any gas-powered sports car.

        2020 Porsche Taycan

The Turbo S goes to 60 mph in 2.4 seconds, making it the fastest EV-only car I've ever seen. (Behind the Lamborghini Huracán Performante and the Porsche 918 Spyder.)

I estimate they should do the deed in 3.0 seconds and 3.8 seconds, respectively.

It's normal for EVs to get slower as the battery charge depletes, but Porsche says the Taycan will be able to execute 10 back-to-back launches with consistent performance.

2020 Porsche Taycan Turbo S has less than 200 miles of range
        2020 Porsche Taycan

        Fuel Economy and Real-World MPGe

The automotive world gasped when the Taycan's EPA range ratings were announced. Coming in at 192 miles for the Turbo S and 201 miles for the Turbo, the Taycan is light years behind the Tesla Model S, which gets ratings between 326 and 373 miles.

The 4S's figures should be slightly higher. However, I expect real-world performance to be much closer than the ratings suggest.

To make the most of that range, you'll probably want Porsche's Intelligent Range Manager, a piece of software that adjusts the climate control and max speed when the remaining battery range is barely sufficient to reach a programmed destination.

        2020 Porsche Taycan

The Porsche Taycan is the first electric vehicle to be built on an 800-volt electrical architecture. This design allows Porsche to offer more powerful 270-kilowatt charging that can recharge the battery from five to 80 percent in 22.5 minutes.

That said, 800-volt DC fast chargers are rare; only a handful currently exist. More common 400-volt DC fast-charging is limited to 50 kilowatts of power, unless you opt for the 150-kilowatt charger.

With low range figures come low efficiency numbers, and, although the electric four-door is more energy efficient than any gas Porsche, among EVs its 69 MPGe for the Turbo and 68 MPGe for the Turbo S lag far behind those of the leaders.

        2020 Porsche Taycan

        Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Given the Taycan's low and sleek roof-line, the interior proves surprisingly spacious. The Porsche doesn't feel nearly as cavernous as that of a Tesla Model S, but a six-footer can fit comfortably in both the front and rear seats.

A four-seat configuration is standard, while a third center-rear seat (offering a total of five seats) is optional.

Tellingly, Porsche calls this configuration a 2+1 arrangement, because that center rear seat is only for short people doing short stints.

The Taycan's cargo space measures 17 cubic feet, which is divided between the trunk and a small front compartment that accommodates a single carry-on-size bag.

        Infotainment and Connectivity

The Taycan comes standard with SiriusXM satellite radio, Bluetooth connectivity, and Apple CarPlay compatibility. Unfortunately, Porsche does not support Android Auto integration.

The standard three-screen cockpit includes a curved-glass instrument panel, a main infotainment touchscreen, and a secondary touchscreen that controls climate functions and doubles as a laptop-like touch-pad as a redundant means of manipulating the upper primary screen.

If that's not enough screen for you, the optional passenger display adds a fourth pane of glass in the dash on the right side of the car. We'd skip it, though, as it's essentially a stripped-down version of the center screen with even less functionality.

        2020 Porsche Taycan

        Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The Taycan is equipped with myriad driver-assistance technologies. Porsche's à la carte options include additional convenience and safety features such as adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, and blind-spot monitoring.

        Key safety features include:

        •  Standard forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking
        •  Standard lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assistance
        •  Available blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert

        • 2020 Porsche Taycan

          Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Porsche's warranty coverage is par for the luxury class and among electric vehicles. The Taycan's optional 93.4-kWh battery is guaranteed to retain at least 70 percent of its capacity for eight years or 100,000 miles.

While several automakers offer the same guarantee, none offers a better high-voltage battery warranty.

          •  Limited warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
          • Electrical components covered for 8 years or 100,000 miles
          •  No complimentary scheduled maintenance.

          2020 Porsche Macan Review

          2020 Porsche Macan

          Overview

The 2020 Porsche Macan sits on the small side of the compact-luxury SUV segment, but it is a definitive counterpoint to the thinking that all utility vehicles are boring to drive.

Excellent performance and unflappable poise, without compromising its day-to-day livability, have helped earn the Porsche several comparison-test victories in our testing over the years.

          2020 Porsche Macan

The Macan features two available engines—a standard 248-hp turbocharged four-cylinder in the base model and an optional 348-hp turbocharged V-6 in the Macan S—as well as a standard seven-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

While some of its competitors are more affordable and practical, the 2020 Macan stands out as a proper driver's machine the way in which Porsche excels.

          2020 Porsche Macan

          What's New for 2020?

The GTS returns to the lineup for 2020. Its twin-turbo 2.9-liter V-6 makes 375 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque.

Apple CarPlay, available as part of the Premium package or as a standalone option, gains wireless connectivity, while wireless device charging has been added to the designated Smartphone Compartment option.

          2020 Porsche Macan

Pricing and Which One to Buy

          •  Base: $52,250
          •  S: $60,750
          • GTS: $72,650

Given the Macan's athletic character, we'd skip the base model and go straight for the V-6–powered Macan S, which brings a meaningful bump in performance.

Standard features include a 10.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 10-speaker audio system, and LED headlights.

            2020 Porsche Macan

We'd also splurge a little for the optional Premium package to get its heated front and rear seats, auto-dimming mirrors, adaptive headlights, Apple CarPlay, and an upgraded 14-speaker audio system, as well as for the Sport Chrono package for its driver-adjustable drive modes and launch-control feature.

Additional amenities and numerous customization options can tack on thousands to a Macan's bottom line, making it wise to know your budget before diving into the option sheet.

            2020 Porsche Macan

            Engine, Transmission, and Performance

We have yet to test the turbocharged four-cylinder that powers the base Macan, but we have strapped our test gear to the 2019 Macan S with its updated 348-hp twin-turbo V-6.

It does an impressive zero-to-60-mph time of 4.7 seconds, which is not only slightly quicker than before but also speedier than the times posted by both the Audi SQ5 and the Jaguar F-Pace S.

It's objectively unnecessary for an SUV to launch off the line as quickly as the Macan does, but that doesn't stop us from enjoying the ride. The GTS is back, with 375 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque.

            2020 Porsche Macan

Porsche estimates it will go from zero to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds and has a top speed of 162 mph. Quickness is important in a crossover with sporting intentions, but I wouldn't be nearly as impressed with the Macan if it weren't for its all-around competence on the road that makes it feel more like a sports sedan.

The ride is wonderfully smooth and carefully controlled, and it's rare for a jolt from the road to make its way into the cabin. The Macan's tenacious attitude in corners makes it feel stable and planted.

The steering is a tad lighter than in Porsche's sports cars, but it's still super accurate and pleasantly tactile.

            2020 Porsche Macan

            Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

The Macan's EPA ratings are very similar to those of its competitors, although a few rivals have better numbers on the highway.

The base Macan carries estimates of 19 mpg city and 23 mpg highway, with the S model rated 1 mpg less around town.

            2020 Porsche Macan

            Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The Macan's standard interior fittings are a disappointment in a crossover of this price and provenance, and it's expensive to outfit one in a manner that befits the Porsche crest.

There's also less space for back-seat passengers in the Macan than in most competitors. The Macan's power-adjustable seats for the driver and front-seat passenger, while comfortable, are the only pieces of standard interior equipment that feel luxurious.

It's possible to have the whole interior draped in leather, which would partly address the issue, but the $2330 that Porsche asks for just covering the center console in cowhide feels like price gouging, even for Porsche.

A puny cargo hold and small interior cubbies make the Macan one of the least practical vehicles in this segment. But when has buying a Porsche ever been a rational choice?

We fit six carry-on bags in the cargo bay and 16 with the rear seats folded, which should be enough for most people.

            Infotainment and Connectivity

Porsche's infotainment system can be had with all manner of high-tech features, including the new-for-2020 wireless Apple CarPlay connectivity and wireless device charging.

But, as with nearly everything on the Macan's equipment list, enjoying those features will cost you. USB ports and 12-volt outlets are sprinkled throughout the cabin, so driver and passengers alike should be able to keep their devices fully charged.

With the standard mobile Wi-Fi package onboard, the family data plan might be able to escape a road trip unscathed, too.

            2020 Porsche Macan

            Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The Macan hasn't been tested by either crash-test agency (nor has any other Porsche currently on sale, for that matter). The Macan can be had with a wide array of driver-assistance technology, but almost none of it is standard.

            Key safety features include:

            • Standard lane-departure warning
            • Available automated emergency braking
            • Available adaptive cruise control

            • 2020 Porsche Macan

              Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Porsche's warranty coverage is good but not great. The F-Pace and the Cadillac XT5 offer greater coverage in certain areas.

              • Limited warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
              • Power-train warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
              • Complimentary maintenance covers 1 year or 10,000 miles.
