2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class Review

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class

            Overview

Sitting at the bottom of Mercedes-Benz's SUV hierarchy, the diminutive GLA-class brings style and luxury in a compact package—and it's all-new for 2021.

Under the hood is a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that drives the front wheels through an eight-speed automatic; all-wheel drive is optional, but isn't likely to make the GLA-class ready to tackle the Rubicon.

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class

A tuned-up AMG version (reviewed separately) will more readily satisfy speed freaks.

Improved interior materials, new tech features, and contemporary exterior styling are all marked improvements versus the outgoing 2020 model and will bring the 2021 GLA-class in line with the rest of the modernized Mercedes lineup.

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class

What's New for 2021?

For 2021, the GLA-class is a clean-sheet redesign. While it still resembles the previous-generation GLA-class, the new model looks more premium inside and out, which will help it blend with the throng of Mercedes-Benz SUVs that launched for the 2019 and 2020 model years.

It shares a platform with the brand's other small offerings, including the slightly larger GLB-class SUV and the entry-level A-class sedan.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

While no one who buys a GLA250 is likely to explore the trails, opting for the 4Matic model adds more than just all-wheel drive.

Mercedes is making the Off-Road Engineering package standard on that model, which provides an off-road driving mode that decreases throttle response and power delivery.

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class

Some drivers may find it useful in certain situations, such as plowing through heavy snow.

The Premium package is a must as it adds the larger 10.3-inch digital gauge display and 10.3-inch infotainment screen, which are combined in one continuous panel and lend a tech-forward appearance to the GLA's cabin.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

As with the 2020 model, the new 2021 GLA-class is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that drives the front or all four wheels.

This time around, the engine makes 221 horsepower—up from 208 and is paired up with an eight-speed automatic rather than the seven-speed.

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class

An all-wheel drive GLA250 4Matic goes from zero-to-60-mph time of just 6.3 seconds. Despite its peppy performance, that result is actually slower than the last model, which manages a 5.7-seconds according to research.

While the 2021 GLA250 hasn't lost all of its spunkiness in the redesign, the suspension is notably more compliant over rough stretches of road—a welcome improvement over the old model.

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class

Fuel Economy

The EPA estimates that the 2021 GLA250 will deliver 25 mpg in the city, 34 mpg on the highway, and 28 mpg combined.

The all-wheel drive GLA250 4Matic's fuel economy estimates are 1 mpg lower in all three metrics. Mercedes says a plug-in-hybrid version will be added later to the lineup.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

One of the chief complaints about the previous-generation GLA-class was its cramped interior. Mercedes has rectified that with the 2021 redesign.

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class

Rear-seat passengers are treated to almost five inches of extra legroom, as well as increased space for shoulders and elbows. This will help the GLA-class compete more directly with key rivals such as the Audi Q3, BMW X1, and Volvo XC40.

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class

Interior materials look upscale, and the layout of controls and climate-control vents is similar to what we see on the GLB-class and A-class, with a column-mounted shifter, center-console-mounted infotainment controller, and circular vents along the dashboard.

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class

Cargo capacity is increased compared with the old model and the rear seats fold flat.

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class

The cargo floor itself now is flush with that of the sill, which should make sliding bulkier items in and out of the trunk easier.

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class

Infotainment and Connectivity

Mercedes-Benz's new MBUX infotainment system—for better or worse—is standard across the GLA-class range.

Base models come with two 7.0-inch displays, one for the driver's gauge display and one for the infotainment system itself.

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class

Dual 10.3-inch displays are optional. The system can be manipulated either via the touchscreen, using voice commands, or by utilizing the touchpad controller on the center console.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard; navigation, SiriusXM satellite radio, a head-up display, and a Burmester premium audio system are all optional.

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

Neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) have released crash-test results for the new GLA-class at the time of writing this post.

Automated emergency braking is standard across the range, but more advanced driver-assistance features such as adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist will require adding the optional Driver Assistance package.

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class

Key safety features include:

  •  Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
  • Available lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist
  •  Available adaptive cruise control with semi-autonomous driving mode
  • 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Mercedes offers a basic warranty package, with coverage stretching four years or 50,000 miles.

The Lexus NX offers longer warranty terms while others, while other rivals such as the BMW and the Volvo offer lengthy contracts for complimentary scheduled maintenance.

  •  Limited warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
  •  Power-train warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
  •  No complimentary scheduled maintenance.

2021 Lexus UX Review

2021 Lexus UX

            Overview

The 2021 Lexus UX is an unusual subcompact luxury crossover, but, despite its hatchback-like proportions, it's also an appropriately classy and surprisingly sporty offering.

Its diminutive size and lower price tag place it below the Lexus NX as the company's smallest crossover. In fact, the UX is the smallest model in the Lexus showroom.

2021 Lexus UX

This means limited cargo capacity and passenger space compared with its competitors, but its low center of gravity contributes to impressive athleticism that helps make the UX fun to drive.

Unfortunately, its standard four-cylinder engine and available hybrid power-train both have poky acceleration and produce coarse noises.

Still, the 2021 UX has a host of standard features and a handsome interior that make it an interesting, albeit small, alternative to classmates such as the BMW X1 and the Mercedes-Benz GLA-class.

2021 Lexus UX

What's New for 2021?

For 2021, Lexus makes several improvements to the regular UX200 and the hybrid UX250h. The latter benefits from a new adjustable rear cargo board that increases its cargo capacity from 17 cubic feet to 22 cubes.

All models now come standard with blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. Fans of Autumn Shimmer and Silver Lining Metallic will be disappointed to hear that both paint colors are no longer available. Lexus also says it has improved the accelerator response on the UX250h.

2021 Lexus UX

Pricing and Which One to Buy

I think the hybrid UX250h is the one to get because of its standard all-wheel-drive system and better fuel economy in the city; I'd go with the F Sport version that brings a sportier suspension, more supportive front seats, and a slick-looking gauge cluster—among other enhancements.

Of the two available packages, I'd pick the Premium option that includes heated front seats, rain-sensing windshield wipers, better interior materials, and a sunroof. Finally, I'd recommend adding a head-up display, heated steering wheel, power lift-gate, and wireless charging.

    2021 Lexus UX

    Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Lexus UX is available with either a gas-powered or a hybrid power-train paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT).

However, only the hybrid UX250h offers all-wheel drive; the regular UX200 is front-drive only.

    2021 Lexus UX

The latter uses a 169-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The 2019 UX does 8.5 seconds to 60 mph, and the engine sounded unrefined at high revs.

While the 2019 UX250h hybrid version makes 181 horsepower, it has equally unimpressive acceleration.

    2021 Lexus UX

Thankfully, both had great steering feel and quiet refinement endearing enough to help make up for their lack of quickness.

An F Sport package brings performance-oriented upgrades such as a sport-tuned suspension, 18-inch wheels on run-flat tires, and exclusive interior and exterior appointments.

    2021 Lexus UX

    Fuel Economy

The hybridized UX is better suited to saving fuel when driving around town, with an EPA-estimated 41 mpg city and 38 mpg highway.

The gas-only model is rated at 29 mpg in the city and 37 mpg on the highway.

    2021 Lexus UX

    Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Inside, Lexus ensures that passengers know this is a luxury vehicle thanks to an attractive layout and posh materials.

    2021 Lexus UX

It also boasts a bunch of standard features that includes dual-zone climate control and power-adjustable front seats.

    2021 Lexus UX

The experience can be elevated with options such as heated and ventilated front seats, a head-up display, and snazzier materials. While the back seat is far from spacious, it's also not as cramped as one might expect.

    2021 Lexus UX

    2021 Lexus UX

Unfortunately, the cargo area behind those seats is pretty small and it's even smaller on hybrid models.

    2021 Lexus UX

    Infotainment and Connectivity

Every UX has a loaded infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Amazon Alexa compatibility, a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot, and four USB ports.

The little Lexus also can be enhanced with numerous options that include a larger 10.3-inch center screen, built-in navigation, wireless charging, and an eight-speaker premium audio system.

While I appreciate this amount of content, the infotainment system is often frustrating to operate with its unintuitive touchpad controller and other illogical controls.

    2021 Lexus UX

    Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The 2021 UX earned a five-star crash-test rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and the last version that was evaluated by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) was named a Top Safety Pick.

Every model is also equipped with standard driver-assistance technology

    2021 Lexus UX

    Key safety features include:

    •  Standard forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking
    •  Standard lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist
    •  Standard blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert
    • 2021 Lexus UX

    Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Lexus provides a competitive limited warranty and an even better power-train warranty. The automaker also includes a short period of complimentary scheduled maintenance.

    •  Limited warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
    •  Power-train warranty covers six years or 70,000 miles
    •  Complimentary maintenance is covered for one year or 10,000 miles.

    2021 Mini Cooper Countryman Review

    2021 Mini Cooper Countryman

                Overview

The 2021 Mini Cooper Countryman is basically a supersized version of the little cars that made the British brand famous for being fun to drive.

While this maximum Mini isn't as quick or nimble as its tinier siblings, it still maintains the company's quirky character. It also provides the largest amount of cargo-and-passenger space found in any Mini, which makes it especially useful for small families.

    2021 Mini Cooper Countryman

With a trio of ascending power-trains that include a plug-in hybrid, the Countryman has wide range of performance.

It's considered a subcompact crossover, but it drives more like a station wagon. The cabin is decorated with peculiar-to-Mini details, and the company provides a plethora of personalization options.

Although its uneven ride quality and missing driver assists detract from the experience, the 2021 Countryman offers a lot of character and convenience.

    2021 Mini Cooper Countryman

    What's New for 2021?

The biggest Mini gets a smattering of updates for 2021. Its unmistakable appearance is now even more distinctive due to a restyled front end.

LED lighting elements promote its British heritage through a Union Jack motif on the taillights. There's now a Piano Black Exterior option that replaces the Mini's chrome trim with gloss-black pieces.

    2021 Mini Cooper Countryman

A set of fresh wheel designs as well as White Silver and Sage Green metallic paint colors are new too. Inside, the infotainment system's housing is redesigned with gloss-black material.

The Countryman is also now compatible with Amazon Alexa voice assistant. There's a new version of the fancy MINI Yours Interior Style, a new range of leather trims and interior surfaces, and a newly optional digital gauge cluster that's mounted on the steering column.

    2021 Mini Cooper Countryman

Pricing and Which One to Buy

Mini hasn't said how much the 2021 models will cost, but I don't expect the mild updates create that much of an upcharge.

With that said, the additional performance and the likely small increase in starting price make the Cooper S model my preferred choice.

Its turbocharged four-cylinder provides an extra 55 horsepower compared with the regular Countryman's three-cylinder engine.

    2021 Mini Cooper Countryman

The S also comes standard with 18-inch wheels, a panoramic sunroof, rear parking sensors, and more supportive sport seats up front. I like the added bad-weather traction of the optional ALL4 all-wheel drive system and would select the mid-level Signature trim.

It adds an 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, dual-zone automatic climate control, forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking, heated seats, and passive entry.

Mini offers all-season tires as a replacement for the standard performance set, but I'd stick with the latter and buy a separate set of winter tires for the cold and slippery season.

The Driver Assistance package would also make our list, because it includes adaptive cruise control and a head-up display.

    2021 Mini Cooper Countryman

    Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Countryman offers several poweritrain combinations and either standard front- or optional all-wheel drive. Apart from the plug-in model, front-drive versions feature a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission; those with all-wheel-drive have an eight-speed automatic.

The base engine is a 134-hp turbocharged three-cylinder that simply lacks the power to move the Countryman's 3,300-plus pounds with any authority. The Cooper S model is equipped with a more powerful 189-hp turbocharged four-cylinder. The plug-in hybrid model (known as the Cooper S E) is the quickest Countryman according to research, but it's also the most expensive.

    2021 Mini Cooper Countryman

It uses a version of the three-cylinder gas engine driving the front wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission in combination with a rear-drive electric motor fed by a 9.6-kWh battery pack. It can charge at either a 120-volt or a 240-volt outlet.

A full charge requires seven hours on standard 120-volt house current and a bit more than three hours on 240 volts. Unlike other Mini models, the Countryman never feels light or tossable from behind the wheel. Its stoic disposition isn't a bad thing; it's just different from other Minis, which are unreservedly playful.

    2021 Mini Cooper Countryman

    Fuel Economy

While the EPA hasn't released fuel-economy ratings for the 2021 Countryman at the time of writing this post, I don't expect them to change from last year's estimates. The gas-powered three-cylinder and four-cylinder models have nearly identical city and highway ratings.

The front-drive Cooper and Cooper S also have a higher combined EPA fuel economy rating than the plug-in hybrid at 29 mpg combined and 28 combined, respectively; oddly, the hybrid Countryman is rated at 27 mpg combined.

The ALL4 AWD versions of the base and S Countryman models have 1-2 mpg lower EPA highway ratings than the front-drive versions but their combined ratings are similar.

The ALL4 Cooper S is rated at 26 mpg combined. With its upgraded battery pack, the Mini Countryman S E is EPA rated for 16 miles of electric-only range.

    2021 Mini Cooper Countryman

    Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The Countryman's interior is typically Mini in its design, including gimmicky elements such as an infotainment system set in a large circular housing in the center of the dash and toggle switches for controlling items such as the interior lights, ignition, and the standard automatic stop/start system.

    2021 Mini Cooper Countryman

If you can get past the whimsical design, there's a lot to like about the Countryman's cabin, which is assembled from high-quality materials and offers adequate passenger space.

The rear bench seat offers enough space for long-haul comfort, although adding a rear-seat armrest requires the purchase of the Convenience package.

    2021 Mini Cooper Countryman

A number of storage nooks provide the Countryman with sufficient space for stashing smaller items; however, the cargo area offers less space than some smaller competitors.

    2021 Mini Cooper Countryman

The Countryman does have a large underfloor storage space in the rear but opting for the available space-saver spare tire takes up most of that.

    2021 Mini Cooper Countryman

    Infotainment and Connectivity

Although the Countryman comes standard with a 6.5-inch screen for its infotainment system, an 8.8-inch touchscreen setup with Apple CarPlay capability and navigation is available as part of a package.

Controlled by either touch inputs, a control knob behind the shifter, or with voice commands, the system boasts logical menu structures and high-quality graphics.

    2021 Mini Cooper Countryman

    Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The 2021 Countryman hasn't been tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) at the time of writing this post.

While it comes standard with eight airbags, the Mini lacks available driver-assistance technologies such as lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and blind-spot monitoring.

    2021 Mini Cooper Countryman

    Key safety features include:

    •  Standard forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking
    •  Available adaptive cruise control
    •  Available self-parking assist
    • 2021 Mini Cooper Countryman

    Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Mini's warranty is mostly average. However, the Countryman and its BMW X1 cousin have the best corrosion warranty and complimentary scheduled maintenance in their class.

    •  Limited warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
    •  Power-train warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
    •  Complimentary maintenance is covered for three years or 36,000 miles.
