2021 Cadillac XT4 Review

2021 Cadillac XT4

Overview

With no shortage of choices in the small-luxury SUV marketplace, the Cadillac XT4 will appeal to buyers who value a sharp-edged design, a spacious interior, and a traditionally upright, SUV-like driving position.

All models come with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine and either front- or all-wheel drive.

2021 Cadillac XT4

The cabin has a modern appearance with plenty of standard and optional technology and infotainment features, but overall refinement isn't quite on the same level as the XT4's key rivals, which includes the Audi Q3, the BMW X1, and the Mercedes-Benz GLA-class.

If you overlook its down-market interior materials, the XT4 remains a practical and stylish option in this popular segment.

2021 Cadillac XT4

What's New for 2021?

Cadillac has made only a few minor changes to the XT4 for 2021, starting with the base Luxury trim, which receives a new standard power rear lift-gate and the option of leather upholstery.

An optional Driver Awareness package that includes automatic high-beam headlamps and lane-keeping assist has also been added to the Luxury trim.

2021 Cadillac XT4

The Sport trim receives red-painted brake calipers, and both it and the Premium Luxury model come with new exterior mirrors with integrated turn signals.

Two new colors join the available palette: Infrared Tintcoat and Wave Metallic.

2021 Cadillac XT4

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The Cadillac XT4 base price is $36,790, and all-wheel drive adds $2500 to every model for those who want it.

The Premium Luxury and Sport models both cost almost the same, but since the former doesn't live up to its name, and the latter is even better to drive, I'd recommend the XT4 Sport.

2021 Cadillac XT4

It has unique wheel designs, blacked-out exterior trim, and exclusive interior accents. The Sport model also has an exclusive active suspension with adaptive dampers and better-bolstered front seats.

To that I'd add the Comfort and Convenience package (leather interior, ventilated and massaging front seats, etc.) and choose the Active Sport suspension (adaptive dampers) to avoid the ride-quality-reducing 20-inch wheels that are required with the Sport Dynamics package.

2021 Cadillac XT4

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Under the hood of all XT4s is a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 237 horsepower. It pairs with a nine-speed automatic transmission and front- or all-wheel drive.

The 2019 XT4 Sport sashays its way to 60 mph in a lackluster 7.8 seconds—1.5 seconds behind the X1.

2021 Cadillac XT4

Despite the difference, the XT4 feels spry around town and when merging onto the highway. Ignore Cadillac's assertion of sportiness with the XT4. It's more of a boulevard cruiser than a sports car.

The ride is okay, so long as the road is relatively smooth. Rough stretches of asphalt translate plenty of vibrations and sharp impacts into the cabin, especially when riding on the optional 20-inch wheels. The steering is similarly disappointing not in its action.

2021 Cadillac XT4

Fuel Economy

Despite its fuel-saving cylinder-deactivation capability, the XT4 earns wholly average EPA fuel-economy estimates, with front-wheel-drive variants reaching 30 mpg on the highway and all-wheel-drive vehicle reaching 29 mpg.

2021 Cadillac XT4

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The XT4's interior, while comfortable and spacious, isn't as high-class as  in the premium segment.

2021 Cadillac XT4

The dashboard and upper door panels are covered in a stitched, faux-leather wrap, but lower on the doors and center console, cheaper, sharp-edged plastic persists.

2021 Cadillac XT4

The buttons and switches look and feel as though they're likely to be shared with less expensive offerings in the General Motors portfolio.

2021 Cadillac XT4

Space is great for the front-seat occupants and actually pretty decent in the back seat, too. As with its passenger compartment, the XT4's cargo room is spacious.

2021 Cadillac XT4

Infotainment and Connectivity

All XT4 models come with an 8.0-inch infotainment system with Cadillac's CUE software. The touchscreen looks nice and crisp and is tucked slightly into the dashboard.

The interface is reasonably easy to use, too, and in addition to touching the screen, the user can also interact via a console-mounted knob.

Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, an onboard Wi-Fi hotspot, and a seven-speaker audio system are all standard; navigation is optional, as is a 13-speaker Bose audio system.

Selecting the available Technology package (Premium Luxury and Sport models only) adds a digital gauge cluster, a head-up display, and a wireless smartphone-charging pad.

2021 Cadillac XT4

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The XT4 has earned a five-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) but the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) hasn't completed its testing at the time of writing this post.

Cadillac does offer it with a plethora of driver-assistance features, but few of them are standard fare.

2021 Cadillac XT4

Key safety features include:

  •  Standard forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking
  •  Available blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert
  •  Available adaptive cruise control

  • 2021 Cadillac XT4

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

The Cadillac warranty outdoes several of its rivals with power-train coverage that lasts six years or 70,000 miles. Cadillac offers one free maintenance visit with the purchase of any 2021 model.

  •  Limited warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
  •  Power-train warranty covers 6 years or 70,000 miles
  •  Complimentary maintenance is covered for one year or 12,000 miles.

2021 Lexus NX Review

2021 Lexus NX

Overview

If you're shopping for a small luxury SUV and finding most of the offerings to be more like hatchback cars than truly trucky, the 2021 Lexus NX may tick the right boxes.

While rivals such as the Mercedes-Benz GLA-class and Lexus's own UX merely give the illusion of being an SUV, the NX has the ride height and overall driving experience of the real thing.

2021 Lexus NX

The NX knows how to pamper its occupants too, with a spacious cabin and an overall sense of luxury, even though it's been around for a while compared to newer, more modern rivals such as the Cadillac XT4 and 2021 Volvo XC40

2021 Lexus NX

Cargo space is plentiful, and Lexus offers an optional hybrid power-train for those seeking maximum fuel efficiency—just don't expect sporty handling from any NX model.

2021 Lexus NX

What's New for 2021?

Even though the subcompact NX is on the far side of the age curve, Lexus hasn't made any major changes to it for 2021.

Blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is now standard, as are power-folding exterior mirrors with an auto-dimming function.

2021 Lexus NX

Inside, Lexus has tweaked the NX's steering wheel and tachometer designs.

Opting for the upgraded Mark Levinson stereo system now includes a Mark Levinson-branded amplifier. And a new color joins the options sheet: Nori Green Pearl.

2021 Lexus NX

Pricing and Which One to Buy

Not only does the NX300 F Sport look the coolest, it's also the best to drive, with a standard adaptive suspension and G-force and turbo-boost gauges.

I think its extra attitude is worth the upgrade, plus it adds the most comfortable and supportive sport seats in the segment. Nonhybrid models come standard with front-wheel drive, so if you want all-wheel drive, plan to add $1400 to the bottom line.

2021 Lexus NX

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

While its acceleration won't blow the doors off any stoplight challengers, the 2021 NX should offer enough power for the casual driver.

The NX300 (formerly known as the NX200t) comes with a 235-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, a six-speed automatic, and front-wheel drive; all-wheel drive is also available. An all-wheel-drive F Sport model, it performs a class-average 6.9-second zero-to-60-mph time.

2021 Lexus NX

The Mercedes-Benz GLA250 4Matic manages to sprint to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds, making the NX seem positively sluggish. It's a different story on the road.

The NX doesn't feel lethargic pulling into traffic, the engine's power delivery is linear and predictable, and once the turbo kicks in, it's even peppier.

The hybrid power-train provides even less pep, but its fuel economy is measurably improved.

2021 Lexus NX

While the NX isn't as fun on a twisty road as the BMW X1 or the GLA250, its light steering makes it easy to pilot around town.

Its center of gravity is higher than in either of those competitors, lending it a top-heavy feel when cornering.

2021 Lexus NX

Fuel Economy

Being the tallest and most SUV-like crossover in this segment means the gas-powered NX isn't as efficient as its lower-slung rivals.

The hybrid power-train nets considerable gains at the pump, but its acceleration performance is hindered by its weaker horsepower output.

2021 Lexus NX

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The NX's high-quality interior is a retreat and its front seats are among the most comfortable, but it's beginning to show its age against newer, more contemporary rivals such as the Audi Q3 and the Mercedes-Benz GLB-class.

2021 Lexus NX

Its passenger space may not be as roomy as in some rivals and its exterior styling comes with large blind spots. With less headroom than the X1, the Lexus NX might feel tight for passengers in both the front and back seats.

2021 Lexus NX

Legroom is a different story, where the Lexus delivers 42.8 inches of stretch-out space for front-seat occupants. Rear-seat legroom is also above average for the class.

2021 Lexus NX

Second-row seats split and fold in a 60/40 configuration, but when they are flipped down, they don't lie flat. The rear seats offer recline adjustability and can be optioned with a power-folding feature throughout the lineup.

2021 Lexus NX

Infotainment and Connectivity

Lexus offers a comprehensive list of standard and optional connectivity features in the NX, and the infotainment system's software is easy to learn.

Its touchpad interactivity. An 8.0-inch display is standard but the larger, optional, 10.3-inch display is the one I prefer. No matter the display, Lexus offers Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, and a Wi-Fi hotspot as standard equipment.

2021 Lexus NX

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The NX earns great marks from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the latter of which gave the NX a Top Safety Pick+ award.

The NX's standard driver-assistance features provide an extra layer of protection. The only thing holding the Lexus back from safety greatness is a better backup camera: the current one, while useful, has a disappointingly low resolution.

2021 Lexus NX

Key safety features include:

  •  Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
  •  Standard lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist
  •  Standard adaptive cruise control
  • 2021 Lexus NX

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Lexus offers one of the more comprehensive protection packages in the industry. Both the Volvo XC40 and the BMW X1 come with standard complimentary scheduled maintenance plans that span three years. Lexus provides that benefit for just one year, however.

  •  Limited warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
  •  Power-train warranty covers 6 years or 70,000 miles
  • Complimentary maintenance is covered for 1 year or 10,000 miles.

2021 Mercedes-AMG E53 Review

2021 Mercedes-AMG E53

Overview

When the elegant Mercedes-Benz E-class doesn't offer enough excitement, the AMG-tuned E53 fills the void with increased performance and edgier styling.

A unique grille and exclusive exterior details help separate its sedan, cabriolet, and coupe body styles from their more pedestrian counterparts. A 429-hp turbocharged six-cylinder power-train and standard all-wheel drive deliver all-weather traction and zealous acceleration.

2021 Mercedes-AMG E53

Of course, the E53 family also maintains Mercedes' luxury pedigree with an eye-catching cabin that boasts cutting-edge technology and upscale materials.

In a class brimming with talented competitors, the 2021 Mercedes-AMG E53 ranks among the most remarkable.

2021 Mercedes-AMG E53

What's New for 2021?

Mercedes-AMG gives the E53 a mild makeover for 2021. The changes are shared between the four-door sedan and the two-door coupe and cabriolet.

These include redesigned front and rear ends, a new steering-wheel design, an enhanced infotainment system, the latest driver assists, and an updated power-train.

The latter combines a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six-cylinder engine with a 48-volt hybrid system.

2021 Mercedes-AMG E53

Pricing and Which One to Buy

I'd recommend the drop-top cabriolet model. It comes standard with all-wheel drive, an adjustable air suspension, a fully digital dashboard, and a robust infotainment system.

I'd also select upscale options that include the head-up display, massaging front seats, sport-tuned exhaust, ventilated front seats, and the Warmth and Comfort package (heated armrests, heated steering wheel, rapid-heating front-seat cushions).

2021 Mercedes-AMG E53

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Every E53 is powered by an AMG-tuned turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six-cylinder engine that makes 429 horsepower and 384 lb-ft of torque.

It pairs exclusively with a nine-speed automatic transmission and 4Matic all-wheel drive. Manual swapping of the gears is available at any time via paddle shifters on the steering wheel.

2021 Mercedes-AMG E53

The last E53 coupe sprints from zero to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds. The standard air suspension seamlessly makes the switch from twisty-road demon to comfortable freeway cruiser.

Swapping drive modes subtly changes the sedan's road-damping demeanor without becoming either pillowy or punishing.

The steering—as with the other dynamics—is crisp, sweetly responsive, and well balanced, blending feedback and precision. The E53 rides on standard 19-inch wheels or optional 20-inch rollers.

2021 Mercedes-AMG E53

Fuel Economy

Neither the EPA nor Mercedes-AMG have released fuel-economy estimates for the 2021 E53 lineup at the time of writing this post.

2021 Mercedes-AMG E53

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The E53 earns top marks for interior build quality and the ability to make its passengers feel as if they have just walked into a fine high-end pastry shop in Paris.

2021 Mercedes-AMG E53

The sporty, upscale cabin is completed by a collection of deluxe standard and optional features. The standard interior is plenty fancy, but deep-pocketed buyers can elevate the experience further with exotic wood trims, a fragrance atomizer, and massaging front seats. Flashy red seatbelts are standard fare but can be replaced with black belts for free, which I would choose to do.

2021 Mercedes-AMG E53

The only thing that irked us was the column shifter, which is awkward to use at first, looks out of place in a sports sedan, and feels fragile. The E53 sedan has the smallest trunk volume among most rivals.

2021 Mercedes-AMG E53

Interior storage space is significantly better than the competition, with a commodious center console and a massive underfloor trunk compartment.

2021 Mercedes-AMG E53

Infotainment and Connectivity

A large 12.3-inch touchscreen is standard and supports the company's latest MBUX infotainment system. The unit can be controlled through myriad functions that include a touchpad on the center console, steering-wheel-mounted controls, and voice commands.

The latter are intended to be an intuitive alternative to traditional switchgear. Every E53 also comes standard with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a Burmester stereo, and wireless charging.

2021 Mercedes-AMG E53

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The 2021 E53 hasn't been crash tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) at the time of writing this post.

While driver-assistance technology such as automated emergency braking and blind-spot monitoring are standard, most additional equipment costs extra.

Key safety features include:

  •  Available adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go technology
  •  Available lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist
  •  Available automatic high-beam headlights
  • 2021 Mercedes-AMG E53

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Mercedes-AMG provides competitive limited and power-train warranties. However, the company doesn't offer complimentary scheduled maintenance—something that rivals from BMW and Jaguar do.

  •  Limited warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
  •  Power-train warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
  •  No complimentary scheduled maintenance.
