2021 Audi Q8 Review

2021 Audi Q8

           Overview

The 2021 Audi Q8 has one less row of seats and a lot more style than the three-row Q7 SUV that it is based on.

With a coupe-like profile and bolder bodywork, the two-row Q8 kicks off the company's line of ultimate crossovers, which also includes the separately reviewed SQ8 and RS Q8.

Although the regular Q8 is less powerful than those sportier counterparts, it still boasts a potent 335-hp turbo V-6 and standard Quattro all-wheel drive.

2021 Audi Q8

The Q8 also provides a car-like driving experience that is both athletic and refined. Its cabin is beautifully appointed and solidly put together in typical Audi fashion.

While it holds fewer people and has less cargo space than its three-row sibling, the 2021 Q8 is best suited for those who prioritize sportiness, luxuriousness, and style.

What's New for 2021?

For 2021, Audi gave the Q8 newly standard features and revised option packages. All models now have blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.

The Convenience package on the Premium trim adds a heated steering wheel and a top-view camera. A heated steering wheel is standard on the Premium Plus trim too, and its optional Executive package now has even more content.

This includes adaptive cruise control, heated rear seats, lane-keeping assist, Matrix-design headlights, and armrests covered in leather.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

  •  Premium: $69,195
  •  Premium Plus: $73,045
  •  Prestige: $78,845

The Q8 is considerably more expensive than the Q7, with a price tag that starts about $13,000 higher. But, as they say, that's the price of fashion. And the 8 is undeniably more stylish than the 7, which is most likely its biggest draw.

To offset the price discrepancy and maximize the crossover's value, we'd stick with the base Premium trim and load it with options, which would still be cheaper than choosing the Premium Plus.

    2021 Audi Q8

Standout standard features on our recommended model include a fully digital gauge cluster, built-in navigation, leather upholstery, heated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, and a power-operated tailgate.

To that we'd add the enhanced appearance that comes with the Black Optic package (21-inch wheels and black exterior trim), the Convenience package (blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, wireless charging, and more), and also the Towing package. The latter unlocks the Q8 maximum tow rating of 7700 pounds.

    Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Audi provides every Q8 with a turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 that makes 335 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. It pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission and Quattro all-wheel drive. A 48-volt hybrid-assist system aids stop-start operation, which is smooth and quiet.

While the Audi had deliberate passing power on the highway, it felt hesitant around town. The transmission has mostly dutiful reactions, but it and the engine best cooperated in Dynamic mode, which provoked snappier responses.

    2021 Audi Q8

I only wish the engine and exhaust made gutsier sounds. The Q8 can also tow up to 7700 pounds when properly equipped. Following the guidelines established by other crossover "coupes," the Q8 provides high-riding capability with sporty driving responses.

While it swiftly changes directions and obediently hustles around corners, it's less engaging than Audi sedans, such as the sleek A7. The Q8's steering has light effort and linear feedback, which is relaxing on long trips but boring on switchback roads.

The optional air suspension and wore 22-inch wheels—20-inchers are standard. These large rollers are mostly quiet even on uneven surfaces. With adjustable ride heights and four-wheel steering (included with the Adaptive Chassis package), the Q8 is agile in tight spaces and capable of tackling choppy terrain.

Its brake pedal was easy to modulate at highway speed but suffered from inconsistent reactions in traffic. Still, it hauls the hefty crossover from 70 mph to zero in a competitive 170 feet during emergency-braking.

    2021 Audi Q8

    Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

The Q8 has mediocre EPA estimates that are lower than some all-wheel-drive rivals. The government estimates the Audi gets 17 mpg city and 21 highway, which is identical to the six-cylinder Q7.

    2021 Audi Q8

    Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

In typical fashion, Audi has crafted a sophisticated and sturdy environment inside the Q8. The materials are premium, and the panels are expertly aligned.

While the base model misses out on upscale features such as four-zone climate control and a leather dashboard with contrast stitching, it has standard heated front seats and a panoramic sunroof. Only the top-of-the-line model offers massaging front seats, upgraded leather surfaces, and quieter dual-pane glass.

    2021 Audi Q8

Our test vehicle had all that plus a head-up display and customizable ambient interior lighting. Not only is the Q8 visually impressive, it has more than enough passenger space.

The driving position remains sporty despite its elevated height, and two adults can leisurely stretch out in the back.

Although the two-row Q8 has less cargo volume than the three-row Q7, we managed to squeeze eight carry-on bags behind its back seat. That number increased to 23 (two less than in the Q7) with the split-folding rear bench folded nearly flat.

    2021 Audi Q8

Our test vehicle had the optional air suspension, which can lower the rear end to help with lifting luggage in and out. Inside, the Q8 has limited cubby storage.

Its shallow center-console bin and narrow door pockets left us with few spots to store small items.

    Infotainment and Connectivity

With a pair of vivid touchscreens integrated into the dashboard and center console, every Q8 boasts a cutting-edge infotainment system. Instead of the intuitive rotary controller found on other Audi models, the displays respond to touch inputs with haptic feedback.

I quickly assimilated to its logical menus and large icons, but distractions were unavoidable. Thankfully, receptive voice commands and handy steering-wheel controls provide alternate operation.

Standard features include a Wi-Fi hotspot and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Wireless charging and two different Bang & Olufsen audio systems are optional.

I'am particularly fond of the standard digital gauge cluster (called Virtual Cockpit), with its configurable settings and superb navigation.

    Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The 2021 Q8 hasn't been crash tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), but the previous model year earned a five-star rating.

Likewise, the 2020 model was named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). While the base model is available with several driver assists, more advanced options, such as adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go technology and night vision with pedestrian detection, are reserved for higher trims.

Our test vehicle had the optional 360-degree camera system that helped us navigate narrow drive-throughs and avoid scratching the massive rims.

    Key safety features include:

    •  Standard forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking
    •  Standard blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert
    •  Available lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist

    • 2021 Audi Q8

    Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Audi provides the same limited and power-train warranty as BMW and Mercedes-Benz. The Q8 also includes a brief complimentary scheduled maintenance period.

    •  Limited warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
    •  Power-train warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
    •  Complimentary maintenance is covered for one year or 10,000 miles.

    2021 Volvo XC40 Review

    2021 Volvo XC40

    Overview

Volvo's fun and funky XC40 blends everything I love about the brand's large SUVs with a more youthful appearance and a charming driving demeanor.

Volvo offers two different turbocharged four-cylinders: The 184-hp T4 engine comes with front-wheel drive, and the more powerful 248-hp T5 gets all-wheel drive as standard.

    2021 Volvo XC40

Inside, buyers will find a thoughtfully designed cabin complete with plenty of storage cubbies and a smattering of high-tech features.

Compared with most of its subcompact-crossover rivals—such as the BMW X1 and the Mercedes-Benz GLA-class—the XC40 has a more commanding driving position, making it feel larger than it is.

    2021 Volvo XC40

    What's New for 2021?

Blind-spot monitoring, rear-cross-traffic alert, leather upholstery, adaptive LED headlamps, power-folding exterior mirrors with an auto-dimming function, rear parking sensors, and two rear-seat USB-C ports are now standard across the XC40 lineup.

Volvo cut the AM radio tuner from the features list, but buyers can use the provided TuneIn radio app in the XC40's infotainment system to listen to those stations.

    2021 Volvo XC40

The once-standard heated windshield wiper blades and cargo-area 12-volt outlet are now part of options packages, and the adaptive suspension system is no longer available.

Volvo has also added the all-electric XC40 Recharge model to the lineup, but I will review that model separately.

    2021 Volvo XC40

Pricing and Which One to Buy

    •  Momentum: $34,695
    •  R-Design: $39,945
    •  Inscription: $40,445
    • We'd select the T5 R-Design model not solely for the seasonal security of all-wheel drive, but also for the more powerful 248-hp engine.

The T5 R-Design comes standard with navigation, a panoramic roof, and a sporty appearance.

    2021 Volvo XC40

We'd add the Climate package, which provides heating for the rear seats, steering wheel, and windshield wiper blades, as well as the Advanced package, which brings adaptive cruise control with a semi-autonomous mode, a 360-degree surround-view camera, a wireless smartphone charging pad, a 12-volt outlet in the cargo area, and headlamp washers.

Lastly, we'd opt for the Lava carpeting and door inserts to make the XC40 just a little funkier.

    2021 Volvo XC40

    Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Under the hood of every XC40 is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder making either 184 or 248 horsepower (called T4 and T5, respectively).

The more powerful T5, which pairs exclusively with all-wheel drive, It goes to 60 mph in a reasonably brisk 6.2 seconds.

    2021 Volvo XC40

The eight-speed automatic transmission handles gear-changes without delay and transmits no harshness to the cabin while doing so.

My sole complaint is the coarse sound the engine emits under heavy throttle. When cruising, the power-train is quiet and refined. The XC40's towing capacity—a rarity among subcompact-luxury crossovers—is a stout 3500 pounds.

    2021 Volvo XC40

    Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

Despite boasting class-competitive fuel-efficiency ratings from the EPA, the XC40 T5 produces merely average performance for the segment.

The über-efficient Mercedes-Benz GLA250 and the spunky three-cylinder Mini Cooper Countryman both handily beat the XC40.

    2021 Volvo XC40

    Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Contemporary Swedish styling meets fun and functional design inside the XC40. The cabin's light and airy atmosphere imparts a truly upscale vibe even in the base Momentum trim.

Passenger space is commodious in both the front and rear seats. As is the case with its more expensive stablemates, the XC60 and the XC90, the XC40 is functional inside, well made, and beautifully designed—if not quite as plush and luxurious.

    2021 Volvo XC40

    2021 Volvo XC40

Volvo designers took the opportunity to incorporate more youthful flourishes in the cabin of the Momentum and R-Design trims, such as the optional blaze-orange carpeting that extends up into the door panels, the textured metallic trim in place of traditional wood inlays, and rectilinear vents with floating chrome adjusters.

    2021 Volvo XC40

    2021 Volvo XC40

Top-of-the-line Inscription models sport a classier appearance, with driftwood trim and a shift knob crafted from Orrefors crystal. the XC40 manages to accommodate 23 carry-on suitcases with its rear seats folded.

Additionally, Volvo has integrated a number of inventive cargo-storage features throughout the XC40's interior, such as a hook that flips out from the glove-box to hold takeout bags, a divider for the cargo area, and a removable garbage bin with a hinged door in the center console.

    Infotainment and Connectivity

From its prominent and slightly canted position in the center of the XC40's dashboard, Volvo's Sensus Connect infotainment system is projected brightly on a 9.0-inch touchscreen.

Almost everything inside the cabin is controlled via this screen, but there are few redundant physical buttons.

System usability is a mixed bag: The main menus are intuitively arranged, but sub-menus suffer from small touchscreen icons that are fussy to use on the go.

We also noticed pronounced system lag immediately upon startup.

    2021 Volvo XC40

    Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

Volvo offers plenty of driver-assistance tech as standard, including automated emergency braking; more advanced features including a semi-autonomous driving mode are optional.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has given the XC40 a five-star safety rating, and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) named it a Top Safety Pick.

    2021 Volvo XC40

    Key safety features include:

    •  Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
    •  Standard lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist
    •  Available adaptive cruise control with a semi-autonomous driving mode

    • 2021 Volvo XC40

    Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Volvo's warranty coverage is fair, and three years of complimentary scheduled maintenance are a nice perk.

Unfortunately, there's nothing here that makes the XC40 a standout among its rivals, which all offer roughly the same coverage.

    • Limited warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
    • Power-train warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
    • Complimentary scheduled maintenance is covered for three years or 36,000 miles.

    2020 Volvo S90 Review

    2020 Volvo S90

    Overview

Standout design declares the 2020 Volvo S90's place atop the maker's luxury sedan range and sets it apart from the competition.

The S90's elegantly straightforward interior provides tasteful, comfortable and spacious environs equally suited to around-town commutes or long-distance travel.

The S90 is also packed with advanced driver-assistance features in keeping with Volvo's heritage of safety. There are two power-trains, both of which are unconventional.

    2020 Volvo S90

The T6 inline-four is both turbocharged and supercharged while the plug-in hybrid T8 adds more power from the combined gasoline engine and electric motor, and useful electric-only driving range.

I've found the ride and handling a step behind the rest of the class. Volvo's emphasis on safety combine with its distinctive design and comfort to give the S90 broad appeal.

    2020 Volvo S90

    What’s New for 2020?

The former T5 power-train has been dropped from the S90 range while an all-new R-Design package offers a sportier take on the big sedan.

In our experience, the T5's 250-hp turbocharged inline-four sometimes felt strained propelling this heavyweight, so it's no big loss that the base engine is now the 316-hp T6.

This also means all S90s are all-wheel drive, since the T5 was the only front-driver in the lineup. The R-Design replaces exterior chrome with black trim, wears new front and rear designs, and a variety of other accents.

As with all other 2020 Volvos, the 12.3-inch digital driver display is standard, haptic feedback now vibrates the steering wheel when the Pilot Assist semi-autonomous driving mode disengages (that is, you have to take over steering again), the battery in all T8 plug-in hybrids is now a larger 11.6-kWh pack (up from 10.6), and auto-braking is standard with cross-traffic alert technology.

    2020 Volvo S90

Pricing and Which One to Buy

    •  Momentum T6 $51,545
    •  R-Design T6 $54,645
    •  R-Design T8 PHEV $64,195
    •  Inscription T6 $54,645
    •  Inscription T8 PHEV $64,195

While drivers are intrigued by the prospect of a more engaging experience in the R-Design T6, there's a much stronger value evident for luxury buyers in the revised packaging of the base Momentum so that's the one I recommend.

2020 Volvo S90: Review, Trims, Specs, Price, New Interior Features ...
      2020 Volvo S90

      Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The base power-train is a turbocharged and supercharged four-cylinder and is called T6. It does zero to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds—but it's not the hottest S90.

The 400-hp plug-in hybrid T8 version debuted last year matches the results of the six-cylinder BMW 540i xDrive (4.5 seconds) from zero-to-60-mph, but on the road I noticed some occasional hiccups when driving the hybrid power-train.

Give the S90's gas pedal a sharp input and there's a momentary delay, followed by an abrupt moment of acceleration as the gasoline engine kicks in to assist the electric motors. During more sedate driving, this is rarely an issue.

      2020 Volvo S90

Handling is surefooted and lends a sportiness that the Genesis G90 and the BMW 7-series lack.

The trade-off is a ride that hardly feels like terry cloth, let alone velvet, and rough stretches of road transmit more vibrations into the cabin than in the softly sprung G90 and 7-series, particularly when the S90 is wearing the optional 20-inch wheels.

The steering has a weighty feel, but it isn't as direct or as precise as it should be, which erodes the S90's perceived athleticism.

      2020 Volvo S90

      Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The S90's cabin is by far its most impressive feature. A mixture of high-end materials—open-pore wood, genuine leather, brushed metal, and finely grained plastics—come together in a cohesive and undeniably modern space.

      2020 Volvo S90

      2020 Volvo S90

The 14-way power-adjustable front seats in our Inscription test vehicle were all-day comfortable and should fit all body shapes. The S90 lacks features I've come to expect in this segment, though.

A manual steering column makes a surprising—and disappointing—appearance, as nearly all of the Volvo's rivals offer power adjustments.

The S90 sedan will meet the needs of most drivers, and models with the folding rear seat-back offer a cavernous cargo area.

      2020 Volvo S90

      2020 Volvo S90

      2020 Volvo S90

      Infotainment and Connectivity

The S90 is as connected as any of its rivals, and it relies heavily on its infotainment touchscreen to control many of its functions.

All S90s feature a 9.0-inch infotainment touchscreen mounted in the center of the dashboard.

To adjust simple functions such as the heated seats or the optional head-up display, the user must interact with the system.

      2020 Volvo S90

This is becoming par for the luxury-brand course, and some systems are more user-friendly than others.

The S90's system is easy enough to use, but the driver will have a learning curve before feeling comfortable enough to make changes on the go.

The S90 offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity as standard, allowing users to easily interact with their smartphones.

      2020 Volvo S90

      Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

An incomplete set of crash-test data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety makes it hard to judge the S90's safety.

But its long list of driver-assistance features is impressive, and Volvo offers most of it as standard equipment.

      Key safety features include:

      •  Standard automated emergency braking with forward-collision warning
      •  Standard lane-keeping assist
      •  Standard adaptive cruise control

      • 2020 Volvo S90

      Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Volvo offers a class-standard four-year warranty and includes all scheduled maintenance for the first three years.

Genesis offers longer warranty coverage for owners of its G90 sedan, but it's the outlier in the segment.

      •  Limited warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
      •  Powertrain warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
      •  Complimentary scheduled maintenance is covered for 3 years or 36,000 miles.
