2020 Lamborghini Aventador Review

2020 Lamborghini Aventador

Overview

With wild-looking bodywork and dramatic performance, the 2020 Lamborghini Aventador is spectacular in every sense of the word.

It's also the last of a dying breed, with hybrid technology expected to enhance future iterations of the V-12 super-car. Still, this wedge-shaped, scissor-doored Lambo blasts into the sunset with neck-snapping acceleration and a maniacal exhaust note.

2020 Lamborghini Aventador

Hardtop versions avoid the cumbersome removable roof but lack the flamboyance of the topless roadsters. Those seeking maximum performance and prestige will want the feistier SVJ model.

Sure, the 2020 Aventador is old by super-car standards and it's the opposite of practical, but we challenge anyone to find a Lamborghini that's more visceral.

What's New for 2020?

As the Aventador approaches the end of its life-cycle, which launched way back in 2011, Lamborghini looks to say arrivederci with a convertible version of the SVJ variant for 2020.

The roofless one was introduced at the 2019 Geneva auto show. Although the SVJ roadster has the same 759-hp V-12 and 217-mph top speed as the coupe, it costs about $50,000 more.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

  •  S: $426,000 (est.)
  •  S roadster: $468,000 (est.)
  •  SVJ: $518,000 (est.)
  •  SVJ roadster: $564,061

In typical super-car fashion, the 2020 Aventador can be thoroughly customized—and costs a small fortune. The top-of-the-line SVJ roadster, Not only is it marginally heavier than the coupe, it's considerably prettier.

    2020 Lamborghini Aventador

Plus, why spend more than half a million dollars on a V-12–powered exotic if you can't fully immerse yourself in its intoxicating soundtrack?

The roadster enables that. From there, Lamborghini provides a plethora of paint and interior options that allow us to make sure our Aventador won't be confused for one that movie stars and pro athletes drive.

    Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The 2020 Aventador power-train hierarchy begins with a mid-mounted naturally aspirated 6.5-liter V-12 that develops 730 horsepower and 509 lb-ft of torque that is transmitted to the wheels via a seven-speed automated-manual transmission.

    2020 Lamborghini Aventador

This basic setup is shared among the three distinct variants, but the track-focused SVJ (which stands for Superveloce Jota) has various enhancements that unlock extra horsepower and torque that meet the pavement through all four wheels.

    2020 Lamborghini Aventador

The experience of their tremendous acceleration and kidney-crushing cornering forces firsthand. The hefty machines heaves through the corners, but their incredible grip and rear-steering system helps it change direction.

With the latter's top-down ability providing the best method to overhear the V-12's thrilling timbre.

    Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

With fuel-economy ratings in the single digits, the Aventador ranks among the least efficient cars on the market. The EPA expects all models to earn 9 mpg in the city and 15 mpg on the highway.

    Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

In typical Lamborghini fashion, every Aventador supports a set of scissor doors that swing open upward. The low-slung interior is showing its age versus contemporary super-car rivals, but it can be fitted with a variety of premium materials and personalized options.

Still, the cabin will not hold many small items, and luggage space is limited. The dashboard features a digital gauge cluster that changes its layout with the drive modes—Strada, Sport, and Corsa; Ego mode allows you to personalize the settings for power-train, steering, and suspension.

    Infotainment and Connectivity

Unfortunately, the Aventador's standard infotainment system is behind the times, with dated graphics and awkward integration.

In addition to voice commands and Apple CarPlay capability, the company offers a performance data recorder that saves lap times and track data.

An upgraded audio system that adds door-mounted sub-woofers and tweeters on the dashboard is also on the roster.

    Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The 2020 Aventador hasn't been crash-tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Lamborghini also skips the driver-assistance technology that encumber less extraordinary cars.

    2020 Lamborghini Aventador

    Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Compared with most mainstream automakers, Lamborghini's power-train warranty doesn't look all that impressive.

However, its protection plans are competitive with high-end rivals such as Ferrari and can be enhanced by optional maintenance packages.

    •  Limited warranty covers 3 years or unlimited miles
    •  Power-train warranty covers 3 years or unlimited miles
    •  No complimentary scheduled maintenance.

    2021 Lamborghini Urus Review

    2021 Lamborghini Urus

    Overview

The 2021 Lamborghini Urus is extreme in almost every way, which is exactly what's expected when a legendary super-car maker builds an SUV.

Its chiseled bodywork and hulking proportions are appropriately exaggerated, but don't think this 641-hp Italian monster isn't a terror on the track. This is a testament to both Lamborghini's dedication to absolute performance and the super-ute's track-ready hardware.

While the company's Aventador and Huracan super-cars can only be enjoyed by two people, the Urus can entertain—and no doubt frighten—as many as five passengers.

Along with actually useable cargo space, it has the ability to tow a trailer and tackle off-road obstacles. Sure, it costs a fortune and shares some parts with the much less-expensive Audi Q8, but the 2021 Urus earns its title as the ultimate SUV.

The 2021 Lamborghini Urus | Snow and Night Driving - POV - YouTube
    2021 Lamborghini Urus

    What's New for 2021?

Lamborghini makes the 2021 Urus more unmistakable—if that's even possible—by giving it wilder paint options. These include either bright green, orange, or yellow as part of the new Pearl Capsule appearance package.

This kit also adds contrasting 23-inch wheels as well as black trim pieces on the roof, rear diffuser, and spoiler. Whether the exterior is coated in Giallo Inti (yellow), Arancio Borealis (orange), or Verde Mantis (green), the cabin's upholstery is colored to match when paired with the new package.

Along with several other fresh paint choices, the largest Lambo now has more standard driver assists (adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring) and handful of other new standard and optional features.

The 2021 Urus is also more expensive than the outgoing model, with an extra $10,683 tacked onto its starting price. That may be the only thing about the Urus that goes unnoticed.

    2021 Lamborghini Urus

Pricing and Which One to Buy

    •  Urus: $222,004

Although the Urus costs close to a quarter of a million dollars, it's still the least costly Lamborghini you can buy. Add the fact that it can haul more than two people and an ample amount of luggage and it's also the best value in the Italian company's lineup.

Our recommended version would play up its highly extroverted style with the new Pearl Capsule appearance package. We especially like it in the Verde Mantis green paint, which is offset by black exterior details and huge 23-inch wheels.

The interior color scheme is set to match. We'd add the front seats with ventilation and massage functions for increased luxury, and we'd switch to the four-seat configuration that reduces passenger capacity by one but brings rear-seat power adjustments and heated surfaces.

We assume rich people don't want to ride three-deep in the back seat anyway. The other options we'd choose are the upgraded sound system, hands-free tailgate, rear-seat entertainment system, and the available Off-Road drive modes.

      2021 Lamborghini Urus

      Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Urus is powered by a twin-turbo V-8 that makes a stout 641 horsepower, burbles deeply when idling, and absolutely howls under full throttle.

Permanent all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission conspire with all that power to enable fantastic acceleration. The Urus goes from 0 to 60 mph in 3.1 seconds and finishes up the quarter-mile in 11.3 seconds at 121 mph.

Likewise, Lamborghini estimates a top speed of 190 mph. The Urus feels athletic from behind the wheel, too, with quick steering and stable high-speed cornering.

With air springs at all four corners, the Urus has adjustable ride heights based on its various drive modes. Standard carbon-ceramic brakes ensure that the Urus stops as well as it goes—braking from 70 mph to a stop in 149 feet.

The Lamborghini Urus Pushes the Envelope of Design and Manufacturing
      2021 Lamborghini Urus

      Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

Those wealthy enough to afford a Urus likely don't care about fuel economy, but Lamborghini's heaviest model sure likes to drink. While the EPA hasn't announced fuel-economy ratings for the 2021 model, we don't expect the figures to change from the previous model year.

The government estimates the 2020 Urus will earn 12 mpg in the city and 17 mpg on the highway. Its mileage will certainly vary based on driving style.

      2021 Lamborghini Urus

      Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Inside, occupants are treated to a dramatic cabin that's classic Lambo. Jet-fighter design cues abound, with the start button hiding beneath a red flip cover and the shifter looking like a jet's throttle.

To the left of the shifter are levers that control the drive modes and allow customizable performance settings. There is plenty of faux-suede and carbon-fiber trim, while the infotainment system and reconfigurable gauges are straight out of an Audi.

      2021 Lamborghini Urus

      2021 Lamborghini Urus

The back seat has good passenger space and can fit between two and three people depending on which seating configuration is selected.

Interior cubby storage is highlighted by useful door pockets and a bin behind the floating center stack. The Urus also offers up to 22 cubic feet in its cargo area but that drops by 2 cubes with the optional rear bucket seats.

      2021 Lamborghini Urus

      Infotainment and Connectivity

Every Urus is packed with the latest connectivity and infotainment features. Along with a fully digital gauge cluster, there are two touchscreens built into the center stack that include controls for the climate system, audio, and more.

The screens have crisp graphics and large icons, but they're not as intuitive as traditional knobs and buttons.

      2021 Lamborghini Urus

      Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The 2021 Urus hasn't been evaluated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

The Lambo SUV also offers an array of standard and optional driver-assistance technology, including a night-vision camera.

      Key safety features include:

      •  Standard adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go technology
      •  Standard blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert
      •  Available self-parking assist

      • 2021 Lamborghini Urus

        Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Lamborghini doesn't provide a lengthy warranty, with three years and no mileage cap. Likewise, it doesn't come with complimentary scheduled maintenance.

However, the Italian automaker does offer extended warranty and maintenance plans for extra coin.

        •  Limited warranty covers three years or unlimited miles
        •  Power-train warranty covers three years or unlimited miles
        •  No complimentary scheduled maintenance.

        2021 Genesis GV80 Review

        2021 Genesis GV80

        Overview

Fledgling luxury carmaker Genesis has proven that it is quite capable of challenging European and Japanese luxury brands and now it's getting into the premium SUV game with the 2021 GV80.

        2021 Genesis GV80

The GV80 takes on the BMW X4 and the Mercedes-Benz GLE-class. Genesis's first SUV is powered by a standard turbocharged four-cylinder or a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6 engine; rear-wheel drive will be standard and all-wheel drive will be optional.

We've only driven a Korean-spec GV80 so far, but we can report that the SUV provides both agile handling and a serene ride.

        2021 Genesis GV80

        What's New for 2021?

The GV80 is a brand-new entrant into the mid-size luxury SUV marketplace. It will go on sale in summer 2020 as a 2021 model.

        2021 Genesis GV80

Pricing and Which One to Buy

        • 2.5T: $49,925
        • 2.5T Advanced: $53,825
        • 2.5T Prestige: $58,075
        • 3.5T: 60,175
        • 3.5T Advanced: $65,375
        • 3.5T Prestige: $71,795

Since all GV80s come with a plethora of features that include a 14.5-inch touchscreen, heated front seats, and a power lift-gate, even the entry-level models are suitably luxurious.

          2021 Genesis GV80

Still, we crave the extra power provided by the twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6 that costs about $10,000 more than the standard four-cylinder, but we think it's worth the money because it comes standard with all-wheel drive and helps make acceleration effortless.

          2021 Genesis GV80

Likewise, we'd opt for the top-of-the-line Prestige model that has 22-inch wheels, a large digital gauge cluster, Nappa leather upholstery, and adjustable rear seats with heated and cooled cushions.

While this configuration pushes the price of our GV80 over $71,000, it's a bargain compared with luxury rivals that have similar options.

          2021 Genesis GV80

          Engine, Transmission, and Performance

This mid-size luxury crossover shares the same all-new underpinnings as the upcoming next-gen G80 sedan and will be available with rear- or all-wheel drive.

          2021 Genesis GV80

The engine choices start with a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder and escalate to a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6. A hybrid variant has been rumored, but so far Genesis hasn't released any information on such a power-train.

          2021 Genesis GV80

          Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The GV80's interior ushers in a new, more upscale vibe for Genesis's lineup. Burled-wood trim, metal accents, integrated ambient lighting, and a large slim-shaped infotainment display keep things upscale but uncluttered.

          2021 Genesis GV80

Despite the fancy materials, the interior design provides a sense of minimalism that feels truly elegant in person. The front seats are comfortable, supportive, and available with a massage function that feels legitimately relaxing.

          2021 Genesis GV80

A standard three-across bench seat in the second row allows for up to five passengers; a third row of seats will be an optional feature but space back there is expected to be limited and should be considered a place solely for kids.

The 2021 Genesis GV80's Interior Is Seriously Luxurious
          2021 Genesis GV80

          Infotainment and Connectivity

A slim, 14.5-inch infotainment touchscreen stretches across the middle of the GV80's tailored dashboard.

The fact that the screen is touch-sensitive is most likely to provide the front-seat passenger an opportunity to change the radio station or manipulate the navigation system, because the screen itself is quite a reach from the driver's seated position.

Luckily, a click-wheel controller is mounted on the center console so the driver can interact with the system and it works quite well.

          2021 Genesis GV80

          Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

Neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) have released crash-test results for the GV80.

          2021 Genesis GV80

A full suite of driver-assistance features will be standard. A semi-autonomous driving mode also will be standard; it can learn how the owner drives and mimic that person's driving style while in use.

          2021 Genesis GV80

          Key safety features include:

          •  Standard adaptive cruise control with semi-autonomous driving mode
          • Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
          • Standard lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist

          • 2021 Genesis GV80

            Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Among its rivals, the GV80 will offer one of the best standard warranty packages with its extensive power-train coverage.

The X5 and Volvo XC90 both offer the same amount of complimentary maintenance, but neither the GLE-class nor the Range Rover Sport offer such a policy.

            2021 Genesis GV80

            •  Limited warranty covers 5 years or 60,000 miles
            •  Power-train warranty covers 10 years or 100,000 miles
            •  Complimentary maintenance is covered for 3 years or 36,000 miles.
