2021 Bentley Continental GT Review

2021 Bentley Continental GT

Overview

Not only is the 2021 Bentley Continental GT the definition of a grand-touring car, it wears that moniker proudly at the end of its name.

No matter if you choose the hardtop coupe or softtop convertible, the sonorous V-8 or silken V-12, the Continental GT will make you feel like a celebrity on every outing. Unfortunately, you might need to be a celebrity to afford its six-figure price.

For that considerable outlay, Bentley decks out the Continental GT's cabin with fine leather, genuine wood, metal accents, and all manner of modern connectivity features.

Where the Continental GT really shines, though, is on the road, where it can flex its ample power and demonstrate its near perfect balance of comfort and athleticism.

What's New for 2021?

Bentley has made only a few changes to the Conti GT for the 2021 model year. Chief among them is a new panoramic glass roof that's available on the V-8-powered coupe.

Otherwise, the grand-touring two-door receives an updated steering wheel design and three new colors: Viridian, Patina, and Snow Quartz.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

  •  Continental GT V8 coupe: $207,825
  •  Continental GT V8 convertible: $228,025
  •  Continental GT W12 coupe : $224,225
  •  Continental GT W12 convertible: $246,125

Curiously, we prefer the least expensive of the Continental GT's four quite-expensive models, the Continental GT V8 coupe.

Bentley's V-8 is a finely polished gem of an engine that gives up a touch of peak horsepower to the W-12 but makes for a coupe that's every bit as quick in real-world conditions.

It's only at very high speeds that the W-12 engine's increased horsepower makes a difference.

    Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Updated versions of the existing V-8 and W-12 engines that powered the previous-generation Continental GT provide plenty of power.

The V-8, which makes 542 horses, can launch the coupe to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds. The more expensive W-12 engine produces 626 horsepower and can motivate a coupe to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds.

Both use an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission that snaps off super-quick but smooth gearshifts. Customers can order the coupe or convertible with either engine. And all Continental GTs come with an all-wheel-drive system as standard.

    Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

When a twin-turbo V-8 is the most fuel-efficient offering in a particular model, you know that efficiency is not top of mind for the carmaker—or its customers, for that matter. The EPA rates the Continental V-8 at 16 mpg city and 26 highway.

    Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

I expect a luxurious cabin from anything wearing the Bentley badge, and this two-door is no different. The interior is swathed in aromatic leather and fine wood veneers, and nearly everything about the Continental GT is customizable—for a price.

Bentley's designers thought everything through, and each time behind the wheel reveals a surprising detail, such as expertly knurled control knobs and double-stitched diamond-patterned seat trim.

Although the Continental GT technically has seat-belts for four occupants, we'd suggest you avoid using the rear seat for hauling adult-size people since its leg- and headroom are both limited.

In our testing, we were able to fit five carry-on suitcases in the Continental's trunk—plenty of space for a weekend away with your favorite travel companion.

    Infotainment and Connectivity

A 12.3-inch infotainment display dominates the dashboard and can be made to rotate into the dash, bringing up a panel with three small analog gauges showing you the exterior air temperature, the time, and a compass.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability are standard, as is a digital gauge display that allows the driver to control most of the Continental GT's functions using controls on the steering wheel.

The Continental GT offers two optional audio systems: a $6700 Bang & Olufsen arrangement and a truly spectacular $8800 Naim system.

    Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

This vehicle has not been rated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Bentley offers as options driver-assistance features such as adaptive cruise control, a night-vision system, and automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection—items we'd expect to be standard, considering the steep starting price.

    Key safety features include:

    •  Available automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
    •  Available lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist
    •  Available adaptive cruise control

    • 2021 Bentley Continental GT

      Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Rather than put mileage limits on the Continental GT's standard warranty policies, Bentley covers everything for three years regardless of how far the car is driven.

The company also provides the first maintenance visit with their compliments at one year or 10,000 miles.

      •  Limited warranty covers 3 years or unlimited miles
      •  Power-train warranty covers 3 years or unlimited miles
      •  Complimentary maintenance is covered for 1 year or 10,000 miles.

      2021 Bentley Flying Spur Review

      2021 Bentley Flying Spur

      Overview

For some, pulling up to a destination in a new luxury car is reward enough, but for a lucky few nothing short of an ultra-exclusive ride like the 2021 Bentley Flying Spur will do.

From its twin-turbocharged V-12 engine to its opulent leather-and-wood-lined enclave of a cabin, the Flying Spur is built to both pamper its passengers and thrill its driver.

Many buyers may choose to be chauffeured—and for good reason: the Spur's rear seat is a relaxing retreat. But for those who plan to drive themselves, this sportiest Bentley sedan offers eyebrow-raising athleticism, marked by surprisingly agile handling and outrageous straight-line speed.

All of this prestige comes with a princely price tag, of course, one that soars as you customize it from the company's Mulliner catalog of bespoke options and packages.

      2021 Bentley Flying Spur

      What's New for 2021?

The Flying Spur was redesigned for the 2020 model year so 2021 brings only minor tweaks. Chief among them is a newly optional four-seat configuration, which replaces the rear bench seat with two buckets with a fixed center console that runs the entire length of the sedan's cabin.

Elsewhere, a new steering wheel design provides more access to the car's driver-assistance features. New wood trim inserts are available for the rear door panels, and rear-seat picnic tables are an option. The interior can now be ordered with either a carbon-fiber trim or a machined metal finish called Côtes de Genève.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

      •  Flying Spur W-12 sedan: $218,000 (est)

Bentley customers can choose from one of several curated themes, such as Cool Harmony, Storm Noir, or Alter Ego when ordering their Flying Spur, but we'd suggest going with a fully bespoke build to make it uniquely yours.

A seemingly endless array of exterior colors and styling choices await you in the Bentley Mulliner customization program. The same goes for interior appointments, which can include several different types of wood, different-colored leather, and polished metal accents.

Upgrading from the standard City Specification to Touring Specification adds several driver-assistance features, and there's even an optional refrigerated compartment to keep your champagne cool.

        2021 Bentley Flying Spur

        Engine, Transmission, and Performance

For now, all Flying Spurs come with an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic, all-wheel drive, and Bentley's powerful twin-turbocharged 626-hp W-12 engine. A 542-hp V-8 engine will join the lineup later on.

With the 12-cylinder under the hood, the Flying Spur never wants for power; in fact, it can it can show its taillights to many a top-tier sports car in a drag race. It goes to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds.

Credit for that agility must go to the sedan's adaptive suspension and rear-wheel-steering system.

        Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

The Flying Spur's fuel-economy estimates from the EPA look as though they're for a pickup truck rather than a sedan, earning 12 mpg city, 19 mpg highway, and 15 mpg combined.

The forthcoming V-8-powered variant may offer slightly better ratings, but I're not expecting a miracle.

The Flying Spur's chief rival—the Rolls-Royce Ghost—doesn't fare any better here, but the Mercedes-Maybach S560 managed to earn a 25-mpg highway estimate, making it a better choice for those looking to conserve fuel.

        2021 Bentley Flying Spur

        Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Sumptuous leather, genuine wood trim, and real metal accents line the Flying Spur's interior. In the front or back, there's plenty of space for adults to stretch out and enjoy the luxurious environs.

Bentley's interior designers managed to preserve the brand's prim and proper styling while incorporating modern tech features.

A remote touchscreen controller mounted to the rear of the center console allows rear-seat riders to adjust certain things without asking the driver for assistance.

For instance, you can use it to open and close the window shades, adjust the cabin climate, and activate the rear-seat massagers.

A generously sized trunk offers plenty of space for luggage, cases of champagne, or a day's worth of impulse shopping on Rodeo Drive.

        Infotainment and Connectivity

A large 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen is nicely situated between large swaths of wood trim on the Flying Spur's dashboard. For a price, Bentley will swap the static infotainment screen with a rotating display that will—as you may have guessed—rotate the screen into the dashboard and bring up a wood panel featuring three analog dials (an outside-temperature gauge, a clock, and a compass).

Passengers can connect to the Wi-Fi hotspot, and those with compatible smartphones will enjoy the Spur's Apple CarPlay integration.

Bentley provides a 10-speaker stereo system standard but will install one of two premium audio systems for more coin. Buyers may upgrade to either the 16-speaker Bang & Olufsen setup or the 19-speaker Naim system with illuminated speaker grilles.

        2021 Bentley Flying Spur

        Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

Neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) have crash-tested the Flying Spur.

Bentley offers several driver-assistance features; unfortunately, many of them cost extra. Key safety features include:

        •  Standard forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection
        •  Available automated emergency braking
        •  Available adaptive cruise control and night vision

          Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Bentley offers a three-year warranty with the purchase of a new model, but unlike plans from more mainstream luxury brands, there's no mileage limit.

Rolls-Royce offers a similar service but extends to its customers four years of coverage. Furthermore, Rolls-Royce offers four years of complimentary scheduled maintenance while Bentley covers only one.

          •  Limited warranty covers three years or unlimited miles
          •  Power-train warranty covers three years or unlimited miles
          •  Complimentary maintenance is covered for one year or 10,000 miles.

          2021 Bentley Bentayga Review

          2021 Bentley Bentayga

          Overview

Keeping up with the Joneses could be a tough feat if that proverbial family has a 2021 Bentley Bentayga parked in the driveway.

This ultra-luxury SUV offers all the comfort of a leather-filled parlor plus plenty of tech features, a trio of powerful engine choices, and enough cargo space that you can schlep home a few cases of Montrachet when the wine cellar needs restocking.

          2021 Bentley Bentayga

Supple upholstery, rich wood trims, and real metal accents commingle with modern infotainment touchscreens and wireless connectivity features.

The Joneses really know how to treat themselves. Apart from the decadent Rolls-Royce Cullinan, other luxury SUVs have a difficult time stacking up to this Bentley in terms of creature comforts.

          2021 Bentley Bentayga

          What's New for 2021?

Bentley freshened up the Bentayga's styling for 2021 with a more upright grille, new tail-lamps, and updated wheel designs. The SUV takes styling cues from the brand's new Continental GT coupe and Flying Spur sedan.

The Bentayga's cabin sees a new 10.9-inch infotainment display, tweaked dashboard styling, Apple CarPlay compatibility, a revised rear-seat entertainment system, and a wireless smartphone charging pad.

          2021 Bentley Bentayga

Pricing and Which One to Buy

          •  Hybrid: $170,000 (est)
          •  V-8: $175,000 (est)
          •  Speed: $250,000 (est)

Bentley hasn't released pricing for the 2021 Bentayga yet and says the Hybrid and Speed models won't be available until later in the year.

That said, we like the V-8 model best. Even though the Speed's powerful W-12 engine puts more pep in this big SUV's step, its price premium over the V-8 is substantial.

We'd suggest sticking with the eight-cylinder model and adding some niceties to it, such as the adaptive suspension, the rear-seat entertainment system, and the 20-speaker Naim stereo.

And choosing the Touring Specification package will give you a suite of driver-assistance features.

            2021 Bentley Bentayga

            Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Bentley offers a variety of power-trains for the Bentayga. On the low end, you have a 443-hp hybrid arrangement with a turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 and an electric motor.

Then there's the 542-hp twin-turbo V-8 engine. It does 0 to 60 mph in just 3.8 seconds. The Bentayga Speed ups the ante with a 626-hp W-12. Back in 2017, when the Speed made 600 ponies, this super-smooth powerhouse does 3.6-second from 0 to 60-mph.

The W-12's power delivery is creamier than the V-8's, and its performance felt more robust during passing maneuvers. Bentley claims that the Bentayga Speed, with a claimed top speed of 190 mph, is the fastest SUV in the world (although the Lamborghini Urus might have something to say about that).

Regardless of what's under the hood, all Bentaygas utilize an eight-speed automatic transmission and come standard with all-wheel drive.

            2021 Bentley Bentayga

            Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

It should come as no surprise that the Bentayga Hybrid pulls in the best EPA fuel-economy ratings of the range. It also offers up to 18 miles of electric-only driving before the turbocharged V-6 fires up.

The V-8-powered model's ratings of 14 mpg city, 23 mpg highway, and 17 mpg combined aren't bad for a large SUV, but the W-12's are. It earns estimates of 12 mpg city, 17 mpg highway, and 14 mpg combined.

            2021 Bentley Bentayga

            Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Filled with rich-smelling leathers, real wood trim, and glitzy metal accents, the Bentayga's cabin stays true to its luxury branding. Bentley allows buyers to customize just about everything.

Buyers can opt for front and rear buckets, seating four, or they can select a three-across second-row bench and a pop-up two-seat third row to seat seven. While the rear seat doesn't feel as lavish as that of the Bentayga's key rival—the Rolls-Royce Cullinan—it still offers plenty of space for adult passengers to stretch out.

Several different colors of leather upholstery are available, as are two different mother-of-pearl-faced Breitling dash clocks, a bottle cooler for rear-seat passengers, adjustable ambient interior lighting, and even a safe with a biometric lock and fingerprint reader.

The Bentayga's cargo area is generous, at least in two-row versions; we were able to fit nine carry-on suitcases back there.

            Infotainment and Connectivity

All Bentayga models come standard with a 10.9-inch infotainment screen with navigation and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration.

The optional entertainment system consists of two 10.2-inch displays mounted to the front-seat headrests. With it, rear-seat passengers can browse the web, interact with the Bentayga's infotainment system, or play movies.

A 12-speaker stereo is standard, but you can opt for Naim's 20-speaker premium audio system.

            2021 Bentley Bentayga

            Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

Neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) have put the Bentayga through any crash tests, and due to the SUV's price and low sales volume, it's unlikely either agency will.

Bentley offers several driver-assistance features, but unfortunately, almost all of them cost extra. Paradoxically, buyers of "lesser" luxury SUVs such as the BMW X7 or Cadillac Escalade will find many of these features come standard. Key safety features include:

            •  Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
            •  Available lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist
            •  Available adaptive cruise control and night-vision system
            • 2021 Bentley Bentayga

              Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Like all other Bentley models, the Bentayga comes standard with a three-year warranty that has no mileage expiration. Also, the first maintenance visit is free.

The Cullinan offers more value here in the form of a four-year warranty package and four whole years of complimentary maintenance.

              •  Limited warranty covers three years, unlimited miles
              •  Power-train warranty covers three years, unlimited miles
              •  Complimentary maintenance is covered for one year or 10,000 miles.
