2020 Chevrolet Equinox Review

2020 Chevrolet Equinox

Overview

The 2020 Chevrolet Equinox is an agreeable and practical compact SUV, but it lacks the charm of our favorite crossovers. Two turbocharged engines are available—a somewhat anemic 1.5-liter and a smooth and gutsy 2.0-liter—and either one can be paired with front- or all-wheel drive.

A host of driver-assistance features are standard, including automated emergency braking, and the Equinox comes with all of the infotainment goodies we expect in a modern SUV.

Average drivers will find the Equinox's carlike ride and handling perfectly acceptable, but driving enthusiasts will be better served by the sharper Honda CR-V or the downright sporty Mazda CX-5.

What's New for 2020?

Driver-assistance features find their way to the standard features list on the 2020 Equinox: automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assist, lane-departure warning, and automatic high-beam headlamps—all previously optional—are now on all models.

Further to that point, adaptive cruise control is now included in the optional Driver Confidence II package. Elsewhere in the lineup, a Midnight Edition package is new on LT models which blacks out just about everything that can be blacked out, including the Chevy bow-tie logos. The 1.6-liter turbo-diesel engine is no longer available.

2020 Chevrolet Equinox

Pricing and Which One to Buy

  •  L: $24,995
  •  LS: $27,495
  •  LT: $28,695
  •  Premier: $32,595

The mid-range Equinox LT is the best value in its class—so long as you're careful about not adding expensive option packages—and comes with plenty of features that make it worth the upgrade over the LS.

The LT adds an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat, SiriusXM satellite radio, high-intensity discharge headlamps, tinted rear windows, body-colored exterior mirror caps, and chrome trim around the side windows.

The base turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder is sluggish, so we'd advocate for spending the extra $2500 to get the optional turbo 2.0-liter.

    Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Under-powered and frequently out of breath, the base turbo four-cylinder engine won't win any fans with its sluggish performance. The turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder makes 170 horsepower, and when paired with the optional (and heavier) all-wheel-drive system (front-wheel drive is standard), it takes a heavy foot to hustle the Equinox up to highway speeds.

    2020 Chevrolet Equinox

A larger, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder is optional and far better suited for the Equinox's weight. The standard six-speed automatic shifts seamlessly, and in the interest of fuel economy, the gearbox is reluctant to downshift when extra power is needed.

    2020 Chevrolet Equinox

Agreeable and easy to drive, the Equinox handles competently, and its steering is accurate and direct.

The ride is a bit harsh, particularly with the optional 19-inch wheels (17s or 18s are standard), and rougher stretches of road translate some unpleasantness into the cabin.

    2020 Chevrolet Equinox

    Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

In the race for the best fuel economy, smaller engines are all the rage. Chevy's 1.5-liter turbo isn't speedy, but it does offer attractive EPA fuel-economy ratings. Honda's CR-V outpaces the Equinox in both acceleration and fuel efficiency.

    2020 Chevrolet Equinox

    Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Made from durable materials and nicely styled, the Equinox's cabin should draw broad appeal. Both front- and rear-seat passengers should find themselves comfortable in the spacious interior, with enough luxuries to keep them content on longer trips.

The cabin features plenty of cup-holders, but most interior luxuries are offered as standard or optional equipment on higher trim levels; the base Equinox L is a price leader with very few features.

Some rivals offer more space behind the rear seats, but we still managed to fit eight of our carry-on suitcases back there. Aside from a capacious center-console storage bin, the Equinox's cabin storage is merely average.

    Infotainment and Connectivity

A 7.0-inch touchscreen (an 8.0-inch unit is optional) displays Chevrolet's My-link infotainment interface atop the Equinox's dash; the system continues to impress with its ease of use and quick responses.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, as are Bluetooth phone and audio streaming, USB connectivity, and an auxiliary input jack. Standard 4G LTE–powered onboard Wi-Fi makes the Equinox one of the best-connected crossovers.

    2020 Chevrolet Equinox

    Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The Equinox nabbed a five-star honor from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) but missed out on the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's Top Safety Pick accolades due to headlights that scored only Marginal in that agency's testing.

For Equinox shoppers who place driver-assistance features at the top of their wish lists, automated emergency braking, automatic high-beam headlamps, and lane-keeping assist are all standard features. Key safety features include:

    •  Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
    •  Standard lane-keeping assist with lane-departure warning
    •  Available adaptive cruise control
    • 2020 Chevrolet Equinox

      Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Chevrolet's basic warranty package is just that—basic—but so are those of its competitors. The Kia Sportage and its corporate cousin, the Hyundai Tuscon, both offer longer protection plans.

Chevy also provides one free dealer maintenance visit within the first year of ownership, which is a nice perk.

      •  Limited warranty covers 3 years or 36,000 miles
      •  Power-train warranty covers 5 years or 60,000 miles
      •  Complimentary maintenance is covered for the first visit.

      2020 Genesis G80 Review

      2020 Genesis G80

      Overview

The 2020 Genesis G80 stands out in a class full of snazzy mid-size luxury cars, but that has more to do with its intriguing engine options and lower price than style.

Make no mistake, this Genesis isn't a cut-rate sedan masquerading as upper-class transportation. Instead, its creamy ride and comfortable cabin provide an upscale experience to a wider spectrum of consumers.

While the base engine is better off avoided, both its twin-turbo V-6 and V-8 make great sounds and provide great acceleration.

A smorgasbord of desirable features and standard driver assists round out the 2020 G80's roster of reasons to consider it over pricier alternatives.

2020 Genesis G80 Review, Pricing, and Specs
      2020 Genesis G80

      What's New for 2020?

For 2020, Genesis doesn't make any meaningful changes to the G80 lineup.

While we're waiting for the next-generation model to officially debut in the near future, we do know that it will no longer offer a V-8 engine.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

      •  3.8L: $43,545
      •  3.3T Sport: $56,745
      •  5.0L Ultimate: $58,495

Since the only way to get the 365-hp twin-turbo V-6 is on the Sport model, that's the 2020 G80 we'd recommend.

Those who want the all-weather capability of all-wheel drive will have to spend an extra $2500. Every G80 Sport is equipped with performance-oriented features such as unique 19-inch wheels and a sport-tuned suspension.

Likewise, its standard niceties include power-adjustable sport seats, carbon-fiber interior trim, a faux-suede headliner, a head-up display, heated and ventilated front seats, wireless charging, and more.

Other than a selection of paint colors and either a black or gray leather interior, there are no other options or packages.

        2020 Genesis G80

        Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Every 2020 G80 has an eight-speed automatic transmission that pairs with rear- or all-wheel drive. The base model features an underwhelming naturally aspirated V-6 engine.

The Sport model's speedy twin-turbo V-6 is the sweetheart of the engine lineup, whereas the G80 Ultimate's V-8 is refined and more powerful. However, it's less fuel efficient and thousands of dollars more expensive.

The standard G80 is poised and tuned for comfort. The suspension is well damped and, while not overly soft, provides a relaxed ride that soaks up road imperfections quite well.

Body motions are nicely controlled, and the whole package feels balanced and harmonious. As is today's luxury-car norm, the steering wheel transmits only a small amount of feedback from the road to the driver's hands.

The G80 Sport features an exclusive adaptive suspension that increases damping force during aggressive driving without sacrificing cruising comfort.

        Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

Fuel efficiency is not something the 2020 G80 touts on its résumé, especially when it's competing against a raft of turbocharged four-cylinder rivals for the same job.

Even when compared with performance-oriented sedans, the G80 Sport guzzles more fuel.

        2020 Genesis G80

        Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

While the interior styling is hardly groundbreaking, the G80's cabin appointments echo its luxury positioning—even base models are well equipped.

A smattering of buttons on the dashboard and center console handle climate and infotainment controls. Thankfully, Genesis hasn't bought into the recent paradigm of burying the controls in the center screen, and that's a welcome feature.

        2020 Genesis G80

Outward visibility is good, thanks to large windows and smartly designed body structure elements. Stretching out is easy in the G80's front seat, and the outboard rear seats are also spacious. Headroom in both rows is generous, and the seat cushioning is plush enough for daylong slogs.

Despite its large exterior dimensions, the G80's cargo-hauling capabilities fall behind those of its trimmer rivals. It can handle a couple of sets of golf clubs in the trunk, but bulkier items will pose a challenge. While we fit five carry-on suitcases in the G80's trunk, that was the limit since the rear seats don't fold.

        Infotainment and Connectivity

All 2020 G80s come with either an 8.0- or 9.2-inch touchscreen and plenty of connectivity features. We found the interface relatively intuitive, and users familiar with tablets and smartphones will, too.

Navigation is standard, as are Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. With only one USB port in the car, however, the G80 can have only one device plugged in at a time.

        2020 Genesis G80

        Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The 2020 G80 earned a five-star crash-test rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and the previous model year was named a Top Safety Pick+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

It also has a comprehensive list of standard driver-assistance technology. Key safety features include:

        •  Standard forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking
        •  Standard lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist
        •  Standard adaptive cruise control
        • 2020 Genesis G80

        Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

No manufacturer comes close to the G80 in terms of warranty coverage. Genesis offers what is, hands down, the most comprehensive coverage in its class.

Three years of complimentary scheduled maintenance seals the deal.

        •  Limited warranty covers 5 years or 60,000 miles
        •  Power-train warranty covers 10 years or 100,000 miles
        •  Complimentary scheduled maintenance is covered for 3 years or 36,000 miles.

        2020 Genesis G90 Review

        2020 Genesis G90

        Overview

Every now and then a car comes along that's so good at doing its job that it defies all logic—and the 2020 Genesis G90 is one such car. The G90 knows what it is—a plush, cossetting luxo-barge—and it sticks true to that mission.

The ride is flawlessly smooth, it is competent but not thrilling in the twisties, and its two engines—a twin-turbo V-6 or a non-turbo V-8—both go about their business with nary a grumble nor a twitch penetrating the cabin.

The fact that it starts $20,000 less than key rivals such as the Mercedes-Benz S-class and BMW 7-series is just icing on an already pretty sweet cake.

        2020 Genesis G90

        What's New for 2020?

Genesis has made major changes to its flagship luxury sedan for 2020, starting with an almost entirely new look on the exterior. The company claims to have changed every panel except the roof and doors.

We saw the G90's new look when Genesis unveiled the Korean-market model back in November 2018 and thought it looked quite fetching. Whereas the 2019 model looked a bit bland and drab, the 2020 is eye-catching.

        2020 Genesis G90

Changes to the interior are less obvious, but Genesis has added a new infotainment display with—finally—Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration.

A handful of new driver-assistance features are also added to the features list, including a feature that helps center the G90 in its lane while cruising the highway.

        2020 Genesis G90

Pricing and Which One to Buy

        •  G90 3.3T Premium: $73,195
        •  G90 5.0 Ultimate: $76,695

Normally we love a big V-8 in a luxury car, but in this case we'd stick with the twin-turbocharged 3.3-liter V-6 and saving the money.

The 3.3T, as it's known, is gutsy and nearly as quick as the 5.0-liter V-8, plus the extra weight savings under the hood helps the G90 feel a touch more agile when cornering.

All-wheel drive is optional should you need it, but it adds $2500 to the bottom line.

          2020 Genesis G90

          Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The base turbocharged 3.3-liter V-6 setup with 365 horsepower is an overachiever, matching the acceleration of the 420-hp 5.0-liter V-8 from zero to 60 mph.

Both power-trains pair with a responsive eight-speed automatic transmission and offer either rear- or all-wheel drive. I don't see any reason to pay extra for the less efficient V-8, unless you prefer its more relaxed, old-school character and distinctive sound.

Although the G90 doesn't accelerate as rapidly as its competitors, neither the V-6 nor the V-8 engine will leave you wanting more power.

          2020 Genesis G90

Quietness and cushiness reign supreme, and the Genesis can feel a bit sloppy as you push the pace through a road's curvy bits. Its soft and pillowy ride evokes thoughts of Buicks from the 1970s, but not necessarily in a bad way. It smooths out rough roads and imparts a serene, planted feel on the highway.

The trade-off is a fair amount of body roll in corners, but precise and light steering keeps the heavy G90 from feeling like a total boat. Its brake pedal is not as firm as I'd prefer, but it's not overly mushy, either.

          2020 Genesis G90

          Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

Some of today's modern luxury barges achieve impressive efficiency, but the G90's fuel-economy numbers are average.

The optional V-8 is especially thirsty, but it falls well short of the real-world highway fuel efficiency demonstrated by the Cadillac CT6 and the BMW 7-series.

          2020 Genesis G90

          Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Trimmed in nappa leather, suede, wood, and brushed metal, the G90's interior has a rich feel, even if its design is understated.

Genesis embarrasses higher-priced competitors by making features such as heated and cooled front seats, a head-up display, and a power-operated rear sunshade standard equipment rather than costly options.

As befits a full-size luxury sedan, the G90's plush rear seat is a lovely place. There's plenty of room to stretch out, despite what its dimensions may suggest.

          2020 Genesis G90

Neither the Genesis nor any of its competitors offer folding rear seats, so the capacious trunk is all the cargo space you're going to get.

There is a pass-through behind the rear center armrest for carrying long, narrow items such as skis. Its center console is among the largest in its class, but its door pockets are small. A handy compartment in front of the shifter is nicely sized for holding a smartphone.

The standard 12.3-inch touchscreen is crisp and clear, and its central control knob combines with hard buttons and knobs on the dashboard to make navigating the various menus a cinch.

Whereas last year's model offered little in the way of connectivity, the 2020 G90 now comes standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration.

          Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

While it has never been crash-tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the G90 was named a Top Safety Pick+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Every version comes standard with lots of driver-assistance technology. Competitors from Mercedes-Benz and BMW require you to pay thousands of dollars extra to get these features. Key safety equipment includes:

          •  Standard forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking
          •  Standard lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist
