2020 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Review

2020 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

Overview

Gateway models sometime fall well short of their more expensive counterparts in a luxury automaker's lineup, but that isn't the case with the C-class.

This relatively affordable Benz bears pleasing similarities to the storied S-Class, and it delivers this goodness at a reasonable price. Its cabin is chic and opulent, and its handling is crisp and engaging. Sedan, coupe, and convertible body styles are offered.

The C300 is no slouch in the fun department, but those seeking a little extra kick will want to investigate the AMG variants, which step things up significantly when it comes to performance. I Will review those models, the C43 and C63, separately.

What's New for 2020?

For the 2020 model year, the Mercedes-Benz C-class adds blind-spot monitoring as standard equipment on all models.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

  •  C300 sedan: $42,395
  •  C300 coupe: $46,945
  •  C300 cabriolet: $54,945

We imagine that the sedan body style will be the practical choice for most C-class buyers.

It comes standard with appealing exterior features such as rain-sensing windshield wipers, automatic LED headlights, and heated power-adjustable side-view mirrors with auto-dimming and power-folding capability.

Within the cabin, there is Bluetooth connectivity, power-adjustable front seats with memory settings, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto integration, and keyless entry and ignition.

    Engine, Transmission, and Performance

With all C300 and C300 4Matic models, a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine is standard, and it generates 255 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque.

A nine-speed automatic transmission performs gearshifting duties. Rear-wheel drive is standard; trims with 4Matic in their monikers come with all-wheel drive.

    2020 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

The engine gets this Mercedes off the line without delay. The C300 goes from zero to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds.

It's appropriately muted at idle and at highway speeds, but its soundtrack at full throttle is less pleasing than you'd expect.

The power-plant puts the C-class sedan on par with the Alfa Romeo Giulia 2.0T in quickness and a tad behind the Audi A4.

The transmission complements the engine nicely, providing intuitive shifts.

    2020 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

    Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

The most fuel-efficient choice in the C-class lineup is the rear-drive C300 sedan, and the EPA estimates its fuel economy at 24/35 mpg city/highway.

Rivals such as the BMW 3-Series offer better fuel economy (up to 26/36 mpg). The C300 4Matic sedan is rated at 23/33 mpg by the EPA. A rear-drive C300 coupe we tested achieved real-world fuel economy of 33 mpg on the highway, 2 mpg better than its EPA rating.

    2020 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

    Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The look and feel of the C-class cabin is appropriately ritzy, and its design is similar to that of its costlier sibling, the S-class.

This is a good thing. In front, a touchscreen hovers above a sleek center stack that hosts three circular air vents. The switch-gear feels weighty and substantial, and opting for the available leather upholstery and wood interior accents takes the cabin even further uptown.

Sedans offer 13 cubic feet of trunk space. That figure is on par with the Audi A4's cargo capacity, but it's a lot less than you'll get with the BMW 3-series, which delivers a whopping 17 cubic feet.

    Infotainment and Connectivity

Mercedes-Benz equips the base-model C-class with infotainment amenities such as a 7.0-inch central display screen, Bluetooth phone and streaming audio, and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone integration.

Dual USB ports are standard, along with HD radio and a five-speaker sound system.

If you want a bit more screen space, you can upgrade to a 10.25-inch central color display. Other options include a Burmester surround-sound audio system and an integrated navigation system.

    Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz C-class hasn't yet been crash-tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

However, the 2019 model was an IIHS Top Safety Pick +, earning a top score of Good in all crash-worthiness measures. Key safety features include:

    •  Standard driver-drowsiness monitor
    •  Standard blind-spot monitoring
    •  Available lane-keeping assistance
    •  Available surround-view camera

      Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

The Mercedes-Benz C-class provides a warranty that's on par with the coverage offered by many of its rivals. Keep in mind, though, that you'll get longer warranty protection with the Genesis G70.

      •  Limited warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
      •  Power-train warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
      •  No complimentary scheduled maintenance.

      2021 BMW 3-Series Review

2021 BMW 3 Series First Review | Kelley Blue Book
      2021 BMW 3-Series

      Overview

The 2021 BMW 3-series epitomizes the modern sports sedan with its comprehensive performance and innate sophistication. The German brand offers two phenomenal engines for this model—a 255-hp four-cylinder and a 385-hp straight-six—both of which are as quick as they are refined.

There's also a plug-in hybrid for the green crowd. While we're saddened by BMW's decision to eliminate the 3's manual transmission, the perceptive eight-speed automatic is a worthy substitute. What's more, the 3's fantastic chassis can seamlessly shift from calm to frisky at a moment's notice.

Unfortunately, its steering—although improved over the previous generation's—still lacks the tactility that enthusiasts once idolized. The 2021 3-series fulfills its mission as an entry-level premium sedan with ample cabin and trunk space as well as copious amounts of luxury and technology.

      2021 BMW 3-Series

      What's New for 2021?

Although BMW hasn't divulged the full list of updates to the 3-series, it has announced the return of the 330e plug-in-hybrid model.

Compared with the last-gen PHEV, the latest version boasts several improvements, such as a higher top speed in electric mode (87 mph versus 75), a larger battery (12.0 kilowatt-hours versus 7.6), and a longer EPA-rated all-electric range (up to 22 miles versus 14).

      2021 BMW 3-Series

Pricing and Which One to Buy

      •  330i: $42,245
      •  330e: $45,545
      •  M340i: $55,695

We prefer the gas-powered versions to the plug-in hybrid. There's no question that the M340i packs the most performance, but its asking price is too high for us. Instead, we'd choose the 330i for its surprisingly sufficient power and truly athletic behavior.

Those who want all-wheel drive can add it for $2000. We would equip our example with the M Sport package that brings additional features, unique styling bits, and a specially tuned suspension. Most colors cost extra and not all are compatible with the M Sport option, so we'd choose the pretty Portimao Blue.

For the cabin, we'd select one of the Vernasca leathers to enrich the interior. We'd also add the Premium package for its blind-spot monitoring, hands-free passive entry, head-up display, heated steering wheel, larger touchscreen, and more. The Track Handling package optimizes the sedan's driving dynamics via adaptive dampers and upgraded brakes.

Other desirable but affordable options include the Harman/Kardon sound system, heated front and rear seats, remote start, power-operated trunk-lid, and a Wi-Fi hotspot and wireless charging.

        2021 BMW 3-Series

        Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The 3-series offers two smooth and potent gas-powered engines. The 330i features a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that makes 255 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque.

The M340i pairs with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six that produces 385 ponies and 369 pound-feet. The 330e plug-in hybrid combines a turbo 2.0-liter engine with an electric motor that together generate 288 horses and 310 pound-feet.

My first impression of the 330e revealed a harmonious relationship between the gas and electric elements, and I like the plug-in's new Xtraboost function that provides a burst of power that feels like a shot of nitrous. Each power-train pairs with an exceptional eight-speed automatic transmission and standard rear-wheel drive.

You can power all four wheels for a price. Unfortunately, a manual gearbox is no longer available. (Purists should hold out for the all-new BMW M3 if they need the stick.) Buyers can choose between two suspension setups on the 3: the base arrangement or the upgrade with adaptive dampers.

Our first drive of this G20-gen 3-series was encouraging. The car's newfound steering feel provides more road-surface information and variable effort than its predecessor did, but it's still lacking compared with that of the 3's iconic early generations.

The four-cylinder Bimmer proved its worth by winning a comparison test against other sports sedans. We applauded its ability to transition from relaxed and refined to sharp and playful.

The 330i also secured its spot at the top of its class by thwarting the gorgeous Alfa Romeo Giulia in a two-car comparo.

        Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

BMW and the EPA have released fuel-economy estimates for only the 2021 330e plug-in models so far, but I don't expect the figures for the gas-powered versions to change from the previous model year's.

The rear-drive 2021 330e is rated at 75 MPGe and 28 mpg combined; the all-wheel-drive version, 67 MPGe and 25 mpg combined. The former has an estimated all-electric driving range of 22 miles whereas the latter can go only 20 miles.

The government says the rear-drive 2020 330i earns 26 mpg in the city and 36 on the highway; adding all-wheel drive drops those ratings by 1 and 2 mpg, respectively.

The 2020 M340i has estimates of 22 mpg city and 30 highway regardless of its drive-train configuration.

        2021 BMW 3-Series

        Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Inside, the 3 has a modernized design complete with excellent materials and impressive build quality. Nothing feels cheap inside the 3-series, and its controls are well placed.

BMW also improved outward visibility, and the standard sport seats are well bolstered and supportive, and they offer extensive adjustment so it's easy to get comfortable. The car's extra-cost content includes a detailed head-up display, customizable ambient interior lighting, heated front and rear seats, remote start, and wireless charging.

The BMW's digital instrument cluster is a bit cluttered but still attractive. Some may find the counterclockwise sweep of the tachometer needle odd at first, but you get acclimated to it quickly.

The 3-series has a big trunk with an available power-operated lid. With 17 cubic feet of cargo space, the gas-powered sedan can fit six carry-on suitcases back there and 17 total with the rear row folded.

For comparison, the Mercedes-Benz C300 sedan held one fewer suitcase in both tests and the Alfa Romeo Giulia could fit five and 15, respectively. The 330e has less trunk space (13 cubes) because of its battery pack, and we haven't tested its carry-on capacity.

        2021 BMW 3-Series

        Infotainment and Connectivity

The standard infotainment system runs through an 8.8-inch touchscreen, but the interface can also be controlled with a large knob and buttons on the console or with voice commands.

The Live Cockpit Plus suite of features, which includes navigation, is standard. For the really good stuff, you'll need to spring for the similarly named Live Cockpit Pro package, which increases the size of the touchscreen to 10.3 inches and gives you the latest and most capable iteration of BMW's iDrive system.

A subscription-based Wi-Fi hotspot is optional, but the sedan does come with two USB ports. Apple CarPlay integration is standard but Android Auto is not available.

One interesting option is BMW's Gesture Control, which allows the driver or passenger to input certain commands with hand gestures. It's more novel than helpful, but it'll wow your friends for a few minutes.

        2021 BMW 3-Series

        Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The 2021 3-series hasn't undergone crash testing by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). However, the 2020 model earned a Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS.

BMW is skimpy when it comes to standard driver-assistance technology, providing only forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking. Other features are available, though. For example, the Parking Assistance package will practically park the car for you. Key safety features include:

        •  Available blind-spot monitoring and rear-cross-traffic alert
        •  Available lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist
        •  Available adaptive cruise control

        • 2021 BMW 3-Series

          Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

BMW's limited and power-train warranties align with those from rivals such as Audi and Mercedes-AMG.

It provides longer complimentary maintenance than those alternatives, but Jaguar beats it there.

          •  Limited warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
          •  Power-train warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
          •  Complimentary maintenance is covered for three years or 36,000 miles.

          2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Review

          2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class

          Overview

The Mercedes-Benz G-class is a cultural icon and one of the most versatile SUVs on the planet. However, it's also among the most expensive, which caters to the company's elite clientele.

A potent twin-turbo V-8 helps move this unmistakable box posthaste, and its sturdy all-wheel-drive system ensures few roads are off limits. The Merc's airy and cargo-friendly cabin includes luxurious amenities and high-tech features.

It also can be outfitted with extravagant options, but they'll further inflate the G-wagen's already lofty price.

While it isn't as agile or serene as high-dollar alternatives from Bentley and Rolls-Royce, the 2020 G550 has the added bonus of being seriously capable off-road and undeniably cool everywhere else.

          2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class

          What's New for 2020?

For 2020, Mercedes-Benz doesn't make many changes to the G-class lineup. It does get new options for wheel sizes that range from 18 to 20 inches. The company also introduces the G manufaktur program, which allows further interior and exterior customization.

          2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class

Pricing and Which One to Buy

          •  G550: $128,645

Every G-class commands a six-figure price, and that number can get a lot higher with the wide array of expensive options. While that means most people can't afford a new G550, it also makes the Mercedes more exclusive.

We'd avoid the priciest upgrades and enhance our version with thoughtful choices. These include the optional 18-inch wheels with all-terrain tires that maximize its off-road abilities.

            2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class

We'd also go for the Exclusive Interior package that adds the nicer nappa leather upholstery and snazzier trim pieces.

The Seat Comfort package includes massaging front seats with ventilated cushions, and the available adaptive dampers allow adjustable ride quality.

The only other options we'd choose are the 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and heated steering wheel.

            2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class

            Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Powered by a twin-turbo V-8 that makes 416 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque, the G550 is as quick on the street as it is capable on the trail.

Those who want an even speedier G-wagen can opt for the AMG-tuned G63 (reviewed separately) that makes 577 horses and 627 lb-ft but costs almost $25,000 more to start. All-wheel drive is standard on the G550, and its engine shuttles power through an obedient nine-speed automatic transmission.

The 2019 G550  has much improved road manners compared with the outgoing model, thanks to an independent front suspension and a lower center of gravity. However, its square and tall body caused a lot of wind noise at higher speeds, and it sure doesn't help the SUV feel swift around corners.

Still, the G550's steering feels more precise than ever and the ride quality is composed on all but the choppiest surfaces. Mercedes also equips each G-class with three locking differentials and a low-range gear, which means it can tackle just about any terrain.

That along with generous ground clearance and a maximum towing capacity of 7000 pounds make it a useful tool when it's not shuttling socialites.

            2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class

            Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

Those who can afford to own a 2020 G550 should have deep enough pockets to cover its propensity to swill gasoline. The EPA expects every model to earn 13 mpg in the city and 17 mpg on the highway.

We tested one on our 200-mile fuel-economy route and found that it failed to meet government expectations—earning 15 mpg highway in the real world.

            2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class

            Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Adding to the G-class's off-road chops, the interior is all about luxury and offers more space for people and cargo than the previous generation. Standard features include heated front and rear seats with leather upholstery, a power-adjustable steering column, and three-zone automatic climate control.

With the check of a few option boxes, buyers can enjoy massaging front seats with ventilation, a heated steering wheel, nappa leather upholstery, and a digital gauge display. The G manufaktur interior packages offer the most opulent materials and features, but they cost a considerable amount of money.

While there's no shortage of headroom in the front or rear seats, the experience isn't as palatial as other high-end SUVs such as the Bentley Bentayga or Rolls-Royce Cullinan.

Still, the Benz has tons of cargo space. The version we tested held 16 carry-on suitcases behind its back row and another 17 bags with those seats folded (33 total).

            Infotainment and Connectivity

Every G-wagen features a large 12.3-inch infotainment display that is primarily controlled through a rotary knob and touchpad mounted on the center console.

Along with useful steering-wheel controls and voice commands, the system is easy to operate and less distracting than touch-heavy alternatives.

It also comes standard with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto integration and a 15-speaker 590-watt Burmester audio system. Those looking for further upgrades can add a Wi-Fi hotspot or a rear-seat entertainment system.

            2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class

            Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The 2020 G-class hasn't been crash-tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

However, it does have a slew of standard driver-assistance technology such as blind-spot monitoring and self-parking assist. Key safety features include:

            •  Standard forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking
            •  Standard adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go technology
            •  Standard lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist

            • 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class

            Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Mercedes-Benz provides a competitive limited and powertrain warranty that aligns with other luxury automakers. However, the company doesn't offer any complimentary scheduled maintenance.

            •  Limited warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
            •  Power-train warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
