YSL - Yves Saint Laurent Review

Yves Saint Laurent YSL, also known as Saint Laurent, is a French luxury fashion house founded by Yves Saint Laurent and his partner, Pierre Bergé. The company revived its haute couture collection in 2015 under former Creative Director Hedi Slimane. In April 2016, Anthony Vaccarello was appointed as Creative Director.

Founded in 1961, it has been considered one of the world's most prominent fashion houses and is known for its modern and iconic pieces, such as its tuxedo jackets for women.

Today, Saint Laurent markets a broad range of women's and men's ready-to-wear products, leather goods, shoes and jewelry. Yves Saint Laurent Beauté also has a notable presence in the luxury beauty and fragrance market, although this is owned by L'Oréal, which holds exclusive licenses for the name.

The eponymous brand was founded in 1961 by designer Yves Saint Laurent and his partner, Pierre Bergé, and the current logos were designed in 1963 by A. M. Cassandre.

During the 1960s and 1970s, the firm popularized fashion trends such as the beatnik look, safari jackets for men and women, tight pants and tall, thigh-high boots, including the creation of arguably the most famous classic tuxedo suit for women in 1966, Le Smoking suit.

Some of his most memorable collections include the Pop Art, Ballet Russes, Picasso, and Chinese ones. He also started mainstreaming the idea of wearing silhouettes from the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s.

He was the first, in 1966, to popularize ready-to-wear in an attempt to democratize fashion, with Rive Gauche and a boutique of the same name. Among Saint Laurent's muses were Loulou de La Falaise, the daughter of a French marquis and an Anglo-Irish fashion model;

Betty Catroux, the half-Brazilian daughter of an American diplomat and wife of a French decorator; Talitha Pol-Getty, a model and actress whose husband was a Getty heir; and Catherine Deneuve, the French actress.

The brand continued to expand in the 1980s and early 1990s with fragrances for both men and women, having launched its cosmetic line in 1978. However, by 1992, the company's profits were declining and the company's share price had fallen.

In 1993, the Saint Laurent fashion house was sold to the pharmaceuticals company Sanofi. In the 1998–1999 seasons, Alber Elbaz, formerly of Lanvin, designed three ready-to-wear collections.

Pierre Bergé appointed Hedi Slimane as collections and art director in 1997, and they relaunched YSL Rive Gauche Homme. Slimane decided to leave the house two years later, and he became head of couture menswear at Dior Homme.

In 1999, Gucci (owned by PPR) bought the YSL brand and asked Tom Ford to design the ready-to-wear collection, while Saint Laurent would design the haute couture collection

.

In 2002, dogged by years of poor health, drug abuse, depression, alcoholism, and criticisms of YSL designs, Saint Laurent closed the couture house of YSL.

Reflecting on his career and impact on the fashion industry, Saint Laurent was heavily quoted around the world for stating, "Chanel freed women, and I empowered them. Saint Laurent also stated, "I created the contemporary woman's wardrobe."

In 2012, Kering (previously known as PPR) announced that Hedi Slimane replaced Stefano Pilati as the creative director. Slimane had previously worked with Dior Homme until 2007. In 2015, Slimane announced that he would be reviving Yves Saint Laurent's couture line. In 2016, Slimane left Saint Laurent. His replacement is Anthony Vaccarello.

Despite the fact that Slimane had previously worked with the house, there was much controversy following his appointment, particularly after it was announced that the ready-to-wear line would be re-branded as Saint Laurent.

However, the Yves Saint Laurent name and YSL logo have been retained for accessories such as handbags and shoes, and cosmetics (which are licensed to L'Oréal).

It was also announced that the design studio would move to Los Angeles, California, Slimane's adopted home, while the couture atelier would remain in France.

Slimane stated that he drew inspiration from when the ready-to-wear line was first launched as Saint Laurent Rive Gauche. However, the decision made headlines around the world. It became more controversial after it was reported that famed Parisian boutique Colette was selling shirts with the line "Ain't Laurent without Yves." Saint Laurent requested the store to stop selling the shirts, which it did in its online store.

In October 2013, it was reported that Colette received a letter accusing it of selling counterfeit products that seriously damaged the brand. Following the accusation, it was announced that Saint Laurent had canceled Colette's order for its Spring 2014 Collection, despite the fact that the boutique had been stocking the brand since 1998.

Designed by Slimane, the Paris flagship boutique opened in May 2013. The previous deep red and gold color scheme was replaced by a monochrome interior, with varying materials, including marble and nickel-plated bars. This concept was used in the renovated Beverly Hills boutique, and its new London boutique on Sloane Street, as well as new stores in the United States.

In 2013, a men's store (a first for the brand) opened in San Francisco, a full-line store opened in New York City, in its SoHo neighborhood, and a full-line store opened in Chicago at the Waldorf Astoria on Rush Street, where private showings had been given since the Chicago store closed in 2010.

Under Slimane Saint Laurent plans to continue to expand its presence in the United States, opening new stores in the resort locations of Bal Harbour, Florida and Las Vegas, Nevada, as well as a planned store for Washington, D.C.

Steam - The Ultimate Destination For Playing

Steam is a popular client for buying PC games
, but it isn't the only way to peruse Valve's store.

Steam is also available as a mobile app that brings the storefront and its chat, forums, and remote download functionality to Google-powered smartphones and tablets.

Mobile Steam does a good job of replicating the desktop experience, but the otherwise excellent app carries a few notable omissions. I tested the Android app, but Steam is also available for iPhone.

Steam, The Ultimate Online Game Platform

Steam for Android lets you partake in the many activities associated with the desktop application, such as viewing your inventory, editing your profile, and chatting one-on-one with friends via the built-in messaging system.

Unfortunately, you can't participate in group chats, an action you can perform using the desktop software.

How to play Steam games offline | Technobezz

An analysis of Steam's Android app would be fruitless without discussing its most important feature: enabling you to purchase PC games. Fortunately, Valve's mobile storefront is as robust as its desktop storefront.

The app lets you buy games, view sales, browse recommendations, and add titles to your wishlist, cart, or inventory when you're away from your gaming rig. You can rent movies, too. In fact, mobile Steam is similar to desktop Steam, so I suggest that you read my Steam for PC review for an in-depth explanation of what you can expect from this Android app.

Purchased games are charged to the credit card or debit card associated with your desktop Steam account, so you don't have to worry about whipping out plastic during your commute. You can delete that card from the mobile app, but to add another, you must do so using the Steam desktop application or browser-based store. You also can't redeem Steam codes via the app.

That said, Steam for Android has a killer feature that helped me overlook the app's small faults: remote download functionality. If you have your Steam account up and running on a PC, you can fire up the Steam Android app to initiate a game download.

I often start the download of video games to my home PC while at work, which is a technological godsend when you're dealing with titles that are multiple gigabytes in size, such as Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain and Street Fighter V.

If you dabble in Steam even a little bit, Steam for Android is worth downloading. The app may not let you participate in group chats or redeem game codes, but it gives you the power to make purchases from anywhere your smartphone or tablet can connect to a cellular or Wi-Fi signal. And, really, that's all you need when Rocket League's price is temporarily slashed to $5 and you're stuck in line at the post office.

2020 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Review

2020 Mercedes-Benz S-Class

Overview

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz S-class has long been a shining example of what luxury should be, largely due to its sumptuous looks and impressive performance. Whether you choose the spacious sedan, dignified coupe, or lavish convertible, these top-shelf Benzes are chock full with the latest technology and the finest of materials.

The S-class has it all: an interior that could please a sultan, performance to please a hot shoe, and a road presence that is unmistakably majestic. It may be expensive, but if you're shopping in this segment, you'll be happy to know that you're getting every last bit of your money's worth. An all-new S-class will debut for the 2021 model year.

2020 Mercedes-Benz S-Class

What's New for 2020?

Mercedes-Benz will introduce the 560e, an all-new plug-in variant of the 2020 560 sedan that couples an electric motor with the twin-turbo V-6 for added power and efficiency, plus a claimed 25-mile electric-only range.

There are few changes for the rest of the lineup. Active Parking Assist and Key-less-Go—which is Mercedes-Benz's version of push-button start and keyless entry—are now standard on all models. Additionally, the Premium Package is now standard on the coupe and cabriolet.

2020 Mercedes-Benz S-Class

Pricing and Which One to Buy

  •  S450: $95,245
  •  S560: $105,445
  •  S560e: $110,745
  •  S560 coupe: $131,145
  •  S560 cabriolet: $139,595

If we were in the market for an S-class, we'd have to splurge for a mildly optioned S560, not that there is anything wrong with the S450; its twin-turbo V-6 is silky smooth and plenty powerful, but we prefer the V-8.

Given the higher starting price, optioning the S560 is an exercise in restraint. We'd go for the Driver's Assistance package, which includes semi-autonomous driving and other driver assists.

We'd also select the Premium package that includes niceties such as heated, ventilated and massaging front seats, power side-window rear-seat shades, and a 360-degree camera system.

    Engine, Transmission, and Performance

    The S-class sedan is available with one of two gasoline power-trains: a 362-hp twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 and a 463-hp twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8.

The former is sold with S450 badges, and the latter wears S560 on its trunklid. Rear-wheel drive is standard, but all-wheel drive can be ordered with either engine. It clocked a rear-wheel-drive 2018 S450 at 5.3 seconds in our zero-to-60-mph test; the 2018 S560 did the deed in 4.2 seconds.

The coupe and cabriolet come only with the V-8 and the 2018 S560 coupe managed a brisk 4.0-second zero-to-60-mph run at our test track. If these numbers aren't exciting enough for you, the Mercedes-AMG lineup of S-classes (reviewed separately) are even quicker.

The 560e is expected to be slightly quicker than the standard twin-turbo V-6 models.

    Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

The S-class is relatively efficient for something weighing nearly 5000 pounds, and both V-6 and V-8 engines outpace many of their rivals in the EPA's ratings.

In our testing, the S-class's highway fuel economy proved to be quite good, with the base S450 delivering 31 mpg on our 200-mile highway fuel-economy test route, outperforming the BMW 740i by 1 mpg. The S560 sedan managed a respectable 26 mpg but was outdone by the V-8–powered 750i, which earned 29 mpg.

Adding the 560e into the mix for 2020, we expect even greater efficiency than the non-hybrid models, but we have yet to get any fuel economy data of our own and the EPA hasn't released any official numbers, either.

    2020 Mercedes-Benz S-Class

    Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

There are precious few automotive interiors we'd rather be in than that of the S-class. The cabin is contemporary and overtly luxurious.

Buyers can choose from a host of leathers, woods, and intricate stitching accents for the seats, door panels, and dashboard, as well as power actuation for the rear seats and massage functions for the front and outboard rear chairs. The interior even smells decadent, thanks to the climate control's integrated air-perfuming system.

As with many of its competitors, the S-class has a smaller trunk than you might imagine and doesn't have a folding back seat to open up extra cargo room. We managed to fit five of our carry-on suitcases inside the trunk of both the sedan and the coupe.

If you'll need more cargo capacity, we'd suggest taking a look at the Lincoln Continental, the Volvo S90 or the Cadillac XTS, all of which held more carry-ons and can be had with a folding rear seat.

    Infotainment and Connectivity

Behind its impressive visage—and huge screen area from its dual 12.3-inch displays—the S-class's infotainment system is complex and holds the potential to overwhelm users.

The menu structures are straightforward enough, but they juggle a great number of functions and options. There are five choices of controls for navigating the system, including a main control knob, a touch-sensitive pad next to that knob, hard-button shortcuts to key menus on the dashboard, redundant steering-wheel controls, and voice commands.

The standard list of infotainment features includes navigation, USB and Bluetooth connectivity, SiriusXM satellite radio, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto capability, and a wireless smartphone-charging pad. Onboard Wi-Fi and premium Burmester audio systems are optional.

    Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

It's too bad Mercedes-Benz's long-standing expertise in crash-test performance has yet to be validated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

In the absence of crash ratings from either agency, we cannot comment on its performance. That said, the S-class's available suite of driver-assistance technologies is cutting edge and affordable—relatively speaking. Key safety features include:

    •  Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
    •  Standard lane-keeping assist
    •  Available adaptive cruise control with semi-autonomous driving mode

    • 2020 Mercedes-Benz S-Class

      Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Mercedes-Benz's four-year/50,000-mile warranty is better than the industry average yet is merely in line with what other luxury brands offer. What's more, it falls short of the Genesis G90's coverage.

      •  Limited warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
      •  Power-train warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
      •  No complimentary scheduled maintenance.

      2020 Lincoln Navigator Review

      2020 Lincoln Navigator

      Overview

The 2020 Lincoln Navigator is the company's largest and grandest model, with loads of chrome and seating for up to eight. While some of the parts it shares with the lesser Ford Expedition are obvious, Lincoln gives the Navigator enough exclusive content to feel truly luxurious.

Its effortless acceleration and lofty towing capacity are delivered courtesy of a powerful 450-hp twin-turbo V-6 power-train. Unfortunately, its uncouth ride on uneven roads diminishes the comfort level. Even so, the big Lincoln is packed with cutting-edge technology and is available with extremely comfortable seats.

While the 2020 Navigator is neither fuel efficient nor totally refined, its flashy exterior and extravagant features rise above these shortcomings; it's still one of the best SUVs out there.

      2020 Lincoln Navigator

      What's New for 2020?

Lincoln gives the Navigator lineup improved standard features and updated packages for this year. Every model now has standard adaptive dampers, power-operated running boards, heated and ventilated front seats, automatic high-beams, the latest Sync infotainment software, and the owner's smartphone now can be used as a key.

All but the base models now have illuminated power running boards. The paint-color palette drops Ingot Silver, Ruby Red, and White Platinum in favor of Pristine White, Red Carpet, and Silver Radiance.

Likewise, Lincoln's suite of driver assists—called Co-Pilot360—now includes automatic high-beams, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keeping assist, forward-collision warning, automated emergency braking, and a backup camera with a camera washer. There's also a new Monochromatic package available on the Navigator Reserve that brings unique exterior styling.

      2020 Lincoln Navigator

Pricing and Which One to Buy

      •  Standard: $77,120
      •  Reserve: $82,660
      •  L: $85,860
      •  Black Label: $98,065
      • Black Label L: $101,265

We think the mid-level Navigator Reserve represents the best combination of luxury and value. The long-wheelbase L version has more cargo space and passenger versatility for an extra premium if you need the room; regardless of which model, we'd also choose the all-weather capability of all-wheel drive.

Every Reserve has desirable features such as heated and ventilated front seats, a head-up display, power-adjustable steering wheel, and a host of driver-assistance technologies. The only other options we'd recommend are the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow package that maximizes the Navigator's towing ability.

The Luxury package also orders up Lincoln's excellent 30-way power seats and a fancy 20-speaker Revel Ultima audio system.

        2020 Lincoln Navigator

        Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The 2020 Navigator has only one engine-and-transmission combination, but with 450 horsepower, one is all it needs. We found the Navigator to be responsive and genuinely speedy, and the 10-speed automatic shuffles through gears adeptly enough to avoid perturbing dozing passengers.

At our test track, the standard-wheelbase Navigator and long-wheelbase model had equally quick acceleration. However, straight-line performance is where the Navi's performance potential begins and ends. Steering feel is numb and its sheer bulk prevents it from being a vehicle that encourages enthusiastic driving.

But the most serious problem with our test vehicles was their ride quality. Wearing optional 22-inch wheels, the Navigator was sometimes jittery, and sharp impacts were followed up by bouncing rebounds—the worst of both worlds.

        2020 Lincoln Navigator

        Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

Unlike its V-8 competition, the Navigator employs a downsized, twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 and a 10-speed automatic transmission in the quest for better fuel economy.

Despite its smaller engine, it's far from fuel efficient and proved unexpectedly thirsty during our real-world highway testing. Despite a highway-fuel-economy rating from the EPA of 21 mpg.

        2020 Lincoln Navigator

        Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The Navigator's interior is lavishly spacious and genuinely luxurious. Materials such as open-pore wood trim and massaging front seats are only available in the upper trim levels, but even entry-level Navigators have much to offer.

        2020 Lincoln Navigator

The Navigator's third row is one of the best examples of that seating arrangement. There are 1.1 inches more legroom in the Navigator's third row than that of the Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class, and other competitors fall even further behind.

        2020 Lincoln Navigator

The Navigator offers optional 30-way-adjustable massaging front seats, a keystone feature for Lincoln's flagship SUV. The seats are almost sculptural and are so customizable that you can even adjust the individual left and right thigh supports to different heights.

The Navigator's immense size can be a drawback when weaving through traffic or attempting to park, but it's a huge boon when it comes time to pack for vacation.

Short-wheelbase models have limited cargo space with all three rows in use; cargo space is abundant with the third row folded. Long-wheelbase L models have cargo room aplenty even with the third row in use.

        Infotainment and Connectivity

The Navigator comes standard with an eye-catching 10.0-inch touchscreen and has USB ports in every row. The infotainment system's graphics are slick and easy to read—important for Lincoln's presbyopic clientele—and the huge screen is like a glittering jewel atop the Navigator's prow.

Every model comes with a five-year subscription to Lincoln's smartphone app and related services, and the standard navigation system includes a six-year subscription to SiriusXM's Traffic and Travel Link.

        Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The Navigator hasn't been crash-tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), but the 2019 model received five stars from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Lincoln also makes its Co-Pilot360 suite of driver-assistance technology standard. Key safety features include:

        •  Standard blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert
        •  Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection

          Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Lincoln's warranty coverage roughly matches that of its competitors, but there are a few perks that help the company's customer-service practices stand out from the herd.

Owners who choose the Black Label trim enjoy four years of complimentary scheduled maintenance instead of one year.

          •  Limited warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
          •  Power-train warranty covers six years or 70,000 miles
          •  Complimentary scheduled maintenance is covered for up to four years or 50,000 miles.
