2020 Audi A8 Review

2020 Audi A8

Overview

Audi's largest and most luxurious sedan—the 2021 A8—hides its high-dollar cabin behind a handsome-yet-understated façade. From a distance, it's easy to mistake this nearly six-figure sedan for a humble A4, but that sort of anonymity may actually be appealing to more restrained millionaires.

Inside, buyers will find a cabin that is just as spacious and elegantly outfitted as the showier Mercedes-Benz S-class and BMW 7-series, including available massaging seats for front and rear passengers. Audi has rolled out its entire cavalcade of infotainment and driver-assistance technology here, as the A8 serves as a rolling showcase of whiz-bang features.

What's New for 2021?

Audi is ratcheting up the luxury on the A8 for 2021 by making 22-way, power-adjustable front seats with heat and ventilation standard across the lineup. Also now standard is a wireless smartphone charging pad and a 360-degree exterior camera system.

The top-flight 60 TFSI model now comes with the Sport Style package (20-inch wheels, front-lip spoiler, and chrome lower body cladding) as well as Matrix-design LED headlights and soft Valcona leather upholstery.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

  •  55 TFSI: $87,495
  •  60 TFSI e: $96,895
  •  60 TFSI: $99,895

Going with the 60 TFSI model puts the A8's best feature under the hood: A 453-hp twin-turbocharged V-8. In addition to the more powerful engine, we'd also order the Rear Seat Comfort package, which adds power rear seats with massage and heat to really pamper our passengers.

The Executive package makes our list too. It includes massaging front seats, a head-up display, a heated steering wheel, blind-spot monitoring, and interior ambient lighting.

    Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The base 55 TFSI comes with a turbocharged V-6 rated at 335 horsepower, and the 60 TFSI has a 453-hp twin-turbo V-8 engine. Both versions use a 48-volt hybrid system. An eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive are standard.

The plug-in hybrid 60 TFSI e combines the V-6 with an electric motor and a rear-mounted 14.1-kWh battery pack. The 2021 Audi A8 TFSI e is rated at 443 hp. So far, which sprinted from zero to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds at The test track.

Among six-cylinder executive sedans, that's on par with the Mercedes-Benz S450 but a few tenths off the rapid pace of the BMW 740i.

    2020 Audi A8

The Audi's engine is smooth, but there's no fanfare to its power delivery, and sound-deadening measures are so extensive that it's practically inaudible with the windows up.

The A8 offers a very Audi-like blend of athleticism and ride comfort. An adjustable air suspension and driver-adjustable adaptive dampers are standard.

Optional with the V-8 is a more advanced active suspension that scans the road ahead for bumps and takes measures to compensate. With the base suspension, the Audi A8 isolates you from road irregularities but can still hammer down a back road when the mood strikes.

    Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

While the EPA hasn't released fuel-economy estimates for the 2021 model yet, the A8's lack of mechanical changes suggest its ratings won't change from last year. The six-cylinder 2020 A8 is expected to earn 17 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway.

While we haven't tested a 2020 model with that engine, but the last one we evaluated on our 75-mph highway fuel-economy route earned 30 mpg. We haven't tested the V-8 model, which is rated at 15 mpg city and 23 highway.

The plug-in hybrid is rated at 21 mpg city and 27 highway, with a combined gas-electric rating of 54 MPGe. Its 14.1-kWh battery pack also allows an EPA-rated 17 miles of all-electric driving range.

    2020 Audi A8

    Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Impressive passenger space is an A8 hallmark, and its long wheelbase ensures that rear-seat passengers are well accommodated.

Five-passenger seating is standard, but an optional four-passenger seating package deletes the rear center seat and provides a pair of power-adjustable rear seats with heating, ventilation, and massage as well as a heated foot-massage function and a pair of individual entertainment tablets (while reducing power adjustments for the front passenger seat to make room for all that).

Fine materials are in abundance, and you can order up extended leather and a small forest's worth of wood inlays. But much like the A8's exterior, the interior ambience is sober and not as lavish as that of the Mercedes S-class. Trunk capacity is modest for a big luxury sedan at just 13 cubic feet.

    Infotainment and Connectivity

Audi's excellent 12.3-inch Virtual Cockpit instrument cluster is standard as are the 10.3-inch upper and 8.6-inch lower haptic center screens with the MMI Touch Response system.

There's a lone volume knob for the audio system, since most functions are controlled through the touchscreens. It can be overwhelming initially, but the system is quick to respond and highly configurable, allowing owners to choose their own dedicated buttons on the lower screen while offering permanent buttons for navigation, weather, telephone functions, and radio on the left side of the upper screen.

Just know that you'll wear out the included microfiber wipe trying to remove fingerprints. Up front, there are two USB ports with combined data and charging capability, and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay phone integration is standard along with Amazon Alexa compatibility. Wi-Fi via Audi Connect Plus is available for an additional subscription fee.

    Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The Audi A8 has much the same driver-assistance technologies as other high-end sedans. When equipped with Traffic Jam Assist (Driver Assistance package), the A8 will help you out with acceleration and braking in heavy traffic, but your hands can't leave the wheel for more than a few seconds.

Neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has crash-tested the A8. Key safety features include:

    •  Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
    •  Standard lane-departure warning system
    •  Available adaptive cruise control with semi-autonomous driving mode

    • 2020 Audi A8

      Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Warranty coverage on the 2021 A8 is nothing special in the realm of luxury cars. The first scheduled service is at 10,000 miles, so the complimentary maintenance plan only covers one oil change.

Buyers looking for more value in this category should check out the Genesis G90, which comes standard with up to 10 years or 100,000 miles of warranty and three years of free maintenance.

      •  Limited warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
      •  Power-train warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
      •  Complimentary maintenance is covered for one year or 10,000 miles.

      2020 Lamborghini Huracan Review

      2020 Lamborghini Huracan

      Overview:

Got a need for speed and about a quarter-million dollars to burn? Well, Lamborghini has you covered with the attention-grabbing, hard-charging Huracan. While it's smaller and more affordable than the Aventador and Urus, the littlest Lambo still costs six figures.

However, that buys a glorious V-10 that pairs with rear- or all-wheel drive to deliver delirious acceleration times. Likewise, the sounds its engine makes are enough to drown out a rock concert. Surprisingly, the mid-engined Italian is easy to drive in traffic and doesn't punish passengers.

Now if only American speed limits were uncapped and everyone could afford one, we could officially proclaim the 2020 Huracan as the high-performance machine.

      2020 Lamborghini Huracan

      What's New for 2020?

Lamborghini provides the 2020 Huracan with a new Evo namesake and shuffles the power hierarchy. That latter includes a new rear-drive model that is less powerful than the all-wheel-drive versions but also cheaper and lighter. The entry-level Lambo also receives an updated infotainment system that gets Amazon Alexa integration.

      2020 Lamborghini Huracan

Pricing and Which One to Buy

We think the rear-drive Huracan Evo is the most intriguing model, especially with its significant discount and encouragement of tail-out antics. The sheer variety of paint options means the odds are better that few models will look the same, and we'd recommend the added presence that either of the optional 20-inch wheels provide. Inside, we'd go with the Carbon Skin package that makes the cabin look sportier, and we'd choose the more supportive sport seats.

Finally, we'd select Life Style and Driver Pack that includes a useful lifting system to help avoid front-end damage, smartphone integration, a cup-holder, carbon-ceramic brakes, and adaptive dampers—among other things.

        2020 Lamborghini Huracan

        Engine, Transmission, and Performance

A naturally aspirated 5.2-liter V-10 is nestled behind the Huracán's cabin, and it exudes a devilish sound whenever it revs towards its 8500-rpm redline. The engine develops 602 horsepower on rear-drive models and 631 ponies on all-wheel-drive versions.

It pairs with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic that snaps off shifts on its own volition or via a set of paddle shifters. The all-wheel-drive Evo coupe we tested ripped from zero to 60 mph in 2.5 seconds and cleared the quarter-mile in 10.4 seconds at 135 mph. Huracans with all-wheel drive benefit from rear-wheel steering that improves agility.

Plus, it has a predictive system (called LDVI) that adapts to driver inputs on the fly. While we were mightily impressed with its communicative chassis, the disappointing steering feedback diminished our excitement. Instead, it proved to be a forgiving machine—even when driven around town—that required us to push the limits to be truly fulfilled.

        2020 Lamborghini Huracan

        Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

No matter whether it's the rear-drive or all-wheel-drive model, the hardtop coupe or the roofless Spyder, every 2020 Huracan has the same EPA fuel-economy ratings. That means 13 mpg in the city and 18 mpg on the highway.

We haven't had a chance to subject any variant to our 75-mph highway fuel-economy test route, so we can't comment on the Lambo's real-world efficiency.

        Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Inside, the Huracan boasts an intricate design that boasts a variety of technical pieces—some for show, most for go. The cabin also can be customized with distinct color choices and different materials options.

The supportive seats are bisected by a partially floating center console that incorporates cool toggle switches and an interesting push-button shifter. However, apart from some small door pockets, the Huracan has barely any interior cubby storage.

There's also a front trunk that can hold passenger luggage, but only for those who pack light.

        2020 Lamborghini Huracan

        Infotainment and Connectivity

Unlike most cars, infotainment features are arguably the least interesting thing about a six-figure supercar. Still, Lamborghini outfits the Huracan with an 8.4-inch touchscreen that controls functions such as the audio system, climate settings, and other media content.

Along with Apple CarPlay capability, the Lambo gets Amazon Alexa integration that provides voice-control technology that should theoretically reduce distracted driving.

        2020 Lamborghini Huracan

        Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The Huracan lacks the driver-assistance technology commonly found on more prosaic vehicles. Instead, this purebred supercar has a host of performance assists that help the driver maintain control at triple-digit speed.

These myriad features require an engineering encyclopedia to fully explain, but we can say that the Lambo's advanced chassis and sophisticated power-train are the definition of high tech.

        2020 Lamborghini Huracan

        Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

While people can buy a Hyundai and get a 10-year/100,000-mile warranty, Lamborghini's much shorter coverage is offset by priceless admiration and adulation of gawking onlookers.

The Italian automaker also offers scheduled maintenance packages.

        •  Limited warranty covers 3 years or unlimited miles
        •  Power-train warranty covers 3 years or unlimited miles
        •  No complimentary scheduled maintenance

        2020 Ferrari Portofino Review

        2020 Ferrari Portofino

        Overview

The 2020 Ferrari Portofino allows drivers to soak up the sun and have fun chasing the horizon. With a body that looks seductive no matter if the retractable hardtop is up or down, this front-engine four-seater epitomizes the grand-touring ethos.

The Portofino is also the least expensive way to get into the Ferrari owner's club, but admission still costs a small fortune. Whether the twin-turbo V-8 is rocketing it around or emitting operatic sounds, this Italian-built speedster is a joy to drive and hear. We only wish its steering and brake pedal were as rewarding as the rest of its performance attributes.

Its cabin is sumptuously crafted and customizable, but a small back seat and trunk diminish its practicality. Still, the 2020 Portofino emphatically honors the house of the Prancing Horse.

        2020 Ferrari Portofino

        What's New for 2020?

For 2020, Ferrari doesn't make any significant changes to the Portofino lineup. Since the Italian convertible debuted as a replacement for the California T just a couple years ago, we don't expect it to be altered much for a while.

        2020 Ferrari Portofino

Pricing and Which One to Buy

        •  Portofino: $218,750

While Ferrari offers a wide range of exterior and interior color options, the 2020 Portofino has few other options. Our ideal version would wear the gorgeous dark green Verde British paint, have the black Nero roof, and don the forged Matt Grigio Corsa wheels with yellow-painted brake calipers.

We'd also opt for the exterior carbon-fiber components, black-chromed grille, and black ceramic exhaust pipes to further dress up our Portofino. The interior would feature the available diamond-stitched seats and flaunt the goldish Beige Tradizione color scheme. Our final touches include the carbon interior upgrade, yellow tachometer background, and the upgraded floor mats in the Castoro hue.

            Engine, Transmission, and Performance

A Ferrari is defined by its engine as much as its styling, and the twin-turbo 3.9-liter V-8 that hides beneath the Portofino's elongated hood is excellent.

The engine sends 591 horsepower and 561 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. But the claimed top speed of "over 199 mph" and estimated zero-to-60-mph time in the low three-second range aren't what's most impressive; it's the unmistakable timbre that erupts from the exhaust tips as the Portofino's tach needle charges towards the engine's 7500-rpm redline.

            2019 Ferrari Portofino preview
            2020 Ferrari Portofino

We last drove one in Italy, where the convertible provided a comfortable ride and remarkable body control; both were enhanced by the adaptive dampers. While its electrically assisted steering delivered satisfying feedback, the setup isn't as engaging as what Porsche provides.

Every 2020 Portofino also features carbon-ceramic brakes that ensure this hefty GT can quickly be hauled to a stop. However, we had to get used to the brake pedal's initial softness before receiving the expected firmness.

            Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

Despite its very powerful twin-turbocharged V-8, the government predicts the 2020 Portofino is about as fuel efficient as many full-size SUVs. The EPA estimates the Ferrari will earn 16 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway.

Both figures fall short of V-8–powered rivals such as the Bentley Continental GT (16/26 mpg city/highway) and the Aston Martin DB11(18/24 mpg city/highway). Since we haven't tested the Portofino or either of those alternatives on our 200-mile fuel-economy route, we can't say how efficient they are in the real world.

            2020 Ferrari Portofino

            Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Inside, the 2020 Portofino delights the eyes with a fabulous design and magnificent materials. Its varied surfaces are stitched together with handsome leather, and the 18-way power-adjustable front seats are sculpted to provide comfort and support.

There's also a handy wind deflector that helps keep the cabin quiet at speed when the top is dropped. With a pair of small bucket seats behind the front passengers, the convertible Ferrari can technically transport up to four people. However, we don't recommend that anyone spend time back there.

A useful tray is positioned at the front of the center console for storing small items, and there's even a place to store a beverage nearby. Don't expect to fit a golf bag or too many carry-ons inside the Portofino's trunk, because it's not very big.

            Infotainment and Connectivity

The infotainment system on a Ferrari is like a spare tire on a Buick: it's nice to have when you need it, but not something anyone will ask about. Still, the 2020 Portofino does include a 10.2-inch touchscreen that is mounted in the center of the dashboard.

We found the unit to be responsive during our limited exposure, and the optional touchscreen that faces the front passenger lets them view performance data and even operate the car's navigation system.

            2020 Ferrari Portofino

            Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The 2020 Portofino hasn't been crash-tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The sultry Italian convertible also offers driver-assistance technology, but none of the available features are offered as standard. Key safety features include:

            • Available automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
            • Available lane-departure warning
            • Available adaptive cruise control

            • 2020 Ferrari Portofino

              Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Ferrari's warranty aligns with other high-end automakers such as Lamborghini, and the company also offers 15 years of extended coverage for extra coin. Ferrari boasts the best complimentary maintenance, too, with seven years of unlimited miles.

              •  Limited warranty covers three years or 36,000 miles
              •  Power-train warranty covers three years or 36,000 miles
              •  Complimentary maintenance is covered for seven years and unlimited miles.

              2020 Bentley Mulsanne Review

              Overview

Affluent folks like to show off their wealth almost as much as they like to be chauffeured, and the 2020 Bentley Mulsanne helps them accomplish both. The hand-crafted sedan is the patriarch of the Bentley family, with an imposing outward appearance and intimate cabin experience. Its forceful twin-turbo V-8 provides effortless acceleration, and the Mulsanne is surprising agile for its size.

              2020 Bentley Mulsanne

This combination gives the Mulsanne the performance to ensure that its passengers arrive on time and in style. Inside, elegance is realized through the sedan's rich ornamentation, opulent features, and expansive roominess. Although the 2020 Mulsanne is a shining example of excess and status.

              What's New for 2020?

Bentley hasn't made any significant changes to the Mulsanne lineup this year, but this ultra-luxury sedan is headed for retirement after the 2020 model year.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

              •  Mulsanne: $316,525

With a price tag that could be confused for a mortgage, the 2020 Mulsanne is a six-figure sedan for the one percent of the population. If we were part of that select group, we'd make sure our version was a rolling showpiece. Likewise, the extended wheelbase provides the limousine-like qualities that are so important in this class.

                2020 Bentley Mulsanne

Bentley's sheer variety of paint colors and interior options offer endless combinations that should prevent the Mulsanne from having a twin. Still, we think the 21-inch Classic wheels and ventilated front and rear seats with massage function are must-haves. We'd also spring for the Comfort and Premier specifications.

These together add more comfortable headrests and seat bolsters as well as a jewel fuel-filler cap, stainless-steel door finishers, and the iconic flying "B" radiator sculptor.

                Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Mulsanne is propelled by a 505-hp twin-turbocharged 6.75-liter V-8 drives that turns the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. Acceleration is effortless and the engine's power seems infinite.

                2020 Bentley Mulsanne

In fact, the big Mulsanne hustles like a much smaller sedan. Although perfect for chauffeur duty, the Bentley is also a driver's car, with sharp steering and a poised chassis. Despite its size, the Mulsanne feels surprisingly narrow city streets and parking lots. For a sharper driving experience, check out the Mulsanne Speed.

                Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

Unlike chief rivals such as the Mercedes-Maybach S-class and Rolls-Royce Ghost, the Mulsanne fuels an eight-cylinder engine versus a 12-cylinder. Despite having fewer cylinders, the Bentley's block is actually bigger and thirstier.

The EPA estimates the Mulsanne will earn 10 mpg in the city and 16 mpg on the highway. For comparison, the S650 is rated at 13/21 mpg city/highway and the Ghost has estimates of 12 mpg city and 18 highway. Currently We can't evaluate their real-world highway mpg.

                2020 Bentley Mulsanne

                Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Made with the finest materials and outfitted with luxurious features, the Mulsanne's cabin is a utopia compared with most cars. The leather-swathed space can be personalized with a variety of color schemes, veneer options, and creature comforts such as massaging front and rear seats.

                2020 Bentley Mulsanne

Everything from the door handles to the switch-gear Looks expensive, with smooth and deliberate movements that infer richness. While the front seats face a timelessly designed dashboard, the Mulsanne's main attraction is in the back. Although the regular model isn't short on passenger space, the extended version transforms the rear seats into a studio atmosphere.

With its wheelbase stretched by 9.8 inches, there's enough room to stretch out and luxuriate with the available power-operated leg rests. Of course, the Mulsanne also has plenty of interior cubby storage and a massive trunk that can store loads of luggage (Louis Vuitton, of course).

                Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The 2020 Mulsanne hasn't been crash-tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Bentley does provide driver-assistance technology such as automated emergency braking, forward-collision warning, and blind-spot monitoring as standard but charges extra for adaptive cruise control. Key safety features include:

                •  Standard forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking
                •  Standard blind-spot monitoring
                •  Available adaptive cruise control

                  Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Bentley backs its luxurious lineup with a warranty that spans three years and unlimited miles, but equally extravagant alternatives such as Rolls-Royce offer even better coverage.

Bentley also provides some measure of complimentary maintenance.

                  •  Limited warranty covers three years or unlimited miles
                  •  Power-train warranty covers three years or unlimited miles
                  •  Complimentary maintenance is covered for 1 year or 10,000 miles.
